Speculation Foard of Trade was again dull Fluctuation were over a narrow and though the tone ruled Arm tha greater part of tha day on bullish crop report tha clone allowed May wheat and May corn only tMe higher and May oate 5ie lower. Provisions closed 7H&20C lower. Wheat bulla had fair encouragement oon after the opening. Cables only slightly higher, but northwestern recelpta were much reduced. Added to this wss the bul lish factor of dry weather reporta from tha southwest, Th effect of the early bullish surroundings wa not felt with full force until nearly an hour after the open ing. Trade In general was alack, but the crop conditions finally awakened buyers from the country. The south western mar ' kete were active, St. Loul advancing May f rices lc May here opened a shade lower o unchanged at 76c to 76Vie76Me, and gradually advanced to 7c. Short had covered to some extent, though many speculators paid little attention to the damage reports. The small recelpta in the northwest started the story that the crop yield had been over-estimated. Elevator stocks there were decreasing and new esti mates were made that the crop would be nearer 165,000,000 to 175,000,000 bushels than 200,000,000. There waa no prospect of mois ture In the southwestern states, but the prices that had been built on thla basis did tint hold when llauidatlon beaan near the close. May eased off to Its 'lower opening price and rloeed barely firm at 76c. Re ceipt. 37 cars, 3 contract. Minneapolis and Duluth reported 213 cars, a total for the thrte points of 250 cars, against 662 last week and 32 a year ago. Primary re ceipts wre 4O6.O0O bushels, against 607,000 last year. Beaboard clearances equaled U,0"0 bushels. Corn was given some support by the local bulls and prices ruled strong for a time. Dullness, however, characterised the trade tn general. St. Louis did some buying here and helped early and even in creased receipts had little effect, as traders were confidently expecting a falling off of farmers' offerings. May opened a shade lower to a shade higher at 6114c to 617c, and on local buying sold up to 62c For eign markets were rather indifferent to our advances, cablea being about steady. The southwest was atlll bullish, the cash de mand Improved a little and the same people who bought yesterday renewed business. But the steam blew off the market on dul ness and late liquidation and May reacted and closed barely firm, Htyttc up at ila 62c. Receipts, 119 cars. There was an early demand In, oats, which, together with the strength In other grains, held prices firm. There was, how ever, little change to the situation. May was nervous ana me crown was uncertain as to action. Country offerings were light and commission houses took some May, sending it tip-to 44Tc. Later the early buy ers wanted to get rid of their holdings, and as the demand slackened May sagged and closed easy, VS'o down at 44Vi'"0"Hb4C. Receipts. 108 cars Provisions suffered from the Influence of a heavy run of , hogs at the yards and consequently lower prices. There was a fair snow of firmness early on buying by packers, but later the crowd turned in to sell and May riork closed 20c down at $15.10, May lard 7'4)10c lower at $9.274j and May ribs 7c lower at $8.27tt- - Estimated receipt tomorrow: Vheat, 80 cars; corn, 110 ears; oats, 70 cars; hogs, 40, 000 head. NEW YORK, March 6 Speculative senti ment was somewhat worried today over the money outlook and the acute weakness with which the tripling ended last night waa overcome after a time. It waa In evl-d-nce during tbe morning, but the market Sradually settled back Into Its recent con Itlon of dullness and spottiness., the spe cialties again coming to the front. There were some fairly sensational gain here, which served to Veen the undertone of the narrow market steady. The money market failed to show the sudden constriction of supplies which was dreaded yesterday as a result of the unexpectedly heavy demands converged upon the New York market. The calling of subscriptions to the San Francisco traction merger proved a reliev ing force vto some degree. Instead of ag gravating the stringency, as had been feared. This was due to the fact that for eigners are subscribers tn the syndicate, and their remittances to New York hi re sponse to the call relaxed somewhat the foreign demand for gold. No further ac tual engagements of gold were made today and not all the gold that waa expected wa packed for tomorrow' steamer. It Is not a forced supposition also that the $1,000,000 block of government bonds offered for redemption yesterday was preconcerted as a set-off to the gold to be deposited at the subtreastiry for telegraphic transfer to San Francisco. The movement to San Francisco ha some pussllng features about It, and the applications to the Washington authorities for permission to transfer $30, 0ii0.(K to $60,000,0i) to San Francisco are surmised to other possible demands. Money tn London wa appreciably easier todays and sterling at Paris rose a frac tion. The Indication to day pointed to easier money. The money was paying off loans to the Bank of Eng land; supplies were more plentiful and dis count were sympathetically easier. Busi ness on the Stock exchange began quiet, with price falrlv steady. The money In dications favored high-class securities. Home rails started with a slight Improve ment and then reacted. Americans opened weak and below parity, and owing tn lack of support remained Idle and closed quiet. Spanish 4s and Rio tlntos declined. Copper waa steady at 54. The apprehended stringency In the money market was supplemented by some good returns of gross earnings for railroads for the fourth week of February and by confident assurances that there wa no cause for fear of labor troubles In the anthracite coal fields. Of the day's spe cialties Colorado & Southern again be came conspicuous on an enormous demand, with revival of rumors of buying for con trol. The advance In Chicago & Northwest ern was on unusually large dealings for that closely held stock and was without specific explanation. The death of Leonard lewisonn Induced some selling of Amal gamated Copper, but the stock found sup port. Missouri f 'a cine was under some pressure, out rained witn tne rest of the market and closed with a small net cain. The United 8tate Steel stocks maintained their Inertness and moved within a frac tional range. There were wide movements In a number of less Important stocks which were without explanation. ' Tbe following are the closing Drlcea on tne new lors. block exenange: Metropolitans were favored. All markets were Quoted lower today and as a result packers pounded prices at this puim aisq. i ne maraei coma safety do quoted ofalOo lower, and, with the excep tion or ine neavier and cnoicer loads, it Is probably true that more sold a dime lower than a nickel lower. Trading was fairly active on the better grades, but when It came to the lightweight stuff the market was very slow. Packer did not care whether they got the light hog or not, so tney were left until tn close, wnicn made the last end of the market seem dull. Anything showing weight and qual ity, however, sold on the laat end of the market for fully as much as waa paid earlier In the day. Heavy hog sold largely from $6.05 to $6.20.
