WHEAT CONDITItNS SLIGHTLY CHANCED Leadlaar Cereal Cloaca lomwl Higher Aeeanat el Balllak ' Roatlne Hwi aad Winter Crop Reportt, CHICAOO. Feb. . Speculation In grain was dull again today and the markets were characterised by much hesitation. At the outset the sentiment was bearish, but with the advance of the session traders seemed to be reedy for a bull turn and price reacted well. May wheat closed S'&tyo higher. May corn Ho up and May oate o advanced. Provision lata took a rood apurt and closed 7&10o to lTVfco higher. - . Conditions for wheat trader were little changed. Cablee were only slightly lower, early report of the conditions of the crowing; crops were rather favorable and May opened with some selling. Ho lower to unchanged at 77S to 77o and dipped to TH'tjmc. Profit-taking by ahorta aet In Boon after the opening and apeculatore began to change front. A prominent trade paper reported the growing plants un usually sunceptlhle to weather conditions, which had some bullish effect. May gradually ld up and fluctuated, very narrowly. There waa soma fear that the market might be oversold, but small ad vice In the outside markets and a slightly better cash situation, as Indicated by a better export business at the seaboard, probably helped most In the late apurt. Receipt were so limited, only one car to day, that bulls began talking of tenacious holding by first hands, but, though there wa some effect from this factor, the re ports that shipments would be good If cars could be had neutralised this In fluence. May at one time was selling at 78Ho and closed after another dip firm and VSHo higher at 78H6f78He. Minne apolis and Duluth reported 217 cars re ceived, a total for the three points of only 211). against 341 last week and 337 a year ago. Sales of 2no,000 bushels since yes t orris v for the seaboard and 24 loads at New York were reported. Primary receipt were 831.000 buphela, compared with 4W,. 0 bushels last , vear. Seaboard clear ances In wheat and flour equaled 122,000 bushels. Corn worked much the same way aa fwheat. There waa some little bearlah sentiment on lower cables. Fluctuations wm llmltml to a ranire of UMc. follow ing largely the lead of wheat Stocks, both at Kansas City and St. Louis, were re ported rapidly diminishing. Receipts were very small and the tremendous dlscrep Mnrv nf this vear'a evnorta was shown in the report of the total seaboard ports of only 6,886 bushels, compared with 682,000 a vear aaro. Hh,rts covered to some ex lent and on the upturn May sold at 34 ' rSo. closing rather firm and Ho up at ta-c. Rernlnta were 20. cars. Oat had another comparatively flat day. The early support came largely from wheat and corn, though later there was some small show of Independence. Trade waa narrow and of a local character. The opening was slightly bearlah, but toward noon the bullish sentiment held sway and May aold ur to 444544Mie. clos Ing firm and HQ higher at 44c. Receipts wre 41 cars. ' ' Provisions were dull until 5ust before the close. The start wa slightly better on a better hog market ana some com' mission house buying. Late in the session packers bought liberally and. after a dip from the Mrlv firm rtrlres nrnnucts sold up strongly. May pork closed 17Vjc higher at S16.02H. Buyers were out early, and it was not long before the bulk of the offerings had been disposed of. There were quite a few beef steers In cluded In the receipts this morning, but the better grade sold rreery at steady to strong prices as compared with yesterday. The commoner grades were not In quite as good demsnd, but still they sold without much trouble at about the same prices as were paid yesterday. The cow market took on considerable life this morning, and anything at all good sold at steady to strong prices. Buyers all seemed to. be anxious for the choicer grades, and as offerings were limited there was considerable competition. The medium grades ana canners oia not snow mucn change from yesterday, but as a rule seller did not find It a difficult matter to sell out at fully steady pricea. There wa not enough change In the price paid today for bulls, veal calves and stags to be worthy of mention. Anything good sold freely, while common kinds were neglected. Stockers and feeders were In rather light receipt this morning, so that steers of good weight and quality sold readily at firm prices. There was no improvement, however. In the demand for the common and lightweight stockers, and prices were uneven, the same as they have been all along. Sellers are obliged to take what ever they can get, aa It Is hard to even get bid on common stockers. ine aemana from the country Is almost entirely for the good to choice heavyweight cattle, and for that reason speculators are very slow about buying the common grades.
