BIG TRADE AND HIGHER RANGE OF PRICES Stronjr Caah Situation Gradnallr Tclopea nnd the ColA AVeather Stimulate Speculation to Actlritr. CHICAGO, Jan. 80. A buoyant corn pit Was tho dominant factor In grain mnr keta today and for n time tended to lift all prlcen; but, though bullish ncntlmont eemed to huvo taken hold ot speculation gain, higher prices tempted profit-taking and the closo brought a loan of Ho for May wheat and a gain of tfiyc for May com and -He for May oats. Provisions oloficd So lower all around. There wan a big trade In corn and on ,a general higher range of price. A strong Mh iltuatlon has boen gradually develop ing on the Htrength of the cold weather and today stimulated speculation to ac tivity. Although this cereal wan the strong est and moat actlvo on tho board. The iltuatlon In tho west nnd southwest was the principal factor. Kansas City reported clearing out of ItH surplus und an 1m- provement In tho demand. Nebraska was not offering froely. In general, outsiders ' were bullish. Shorts hero covered and commission houses put in good buying orders. A good support developed, and. oponlng a shade lower to Uo higher at ZHftUc, May advanced until at one time It sold at 63Kc At such prices profit taking was popular and most ot the gain was lost. At the close May was firm, Vi'd j&o higher, at 6syG3Hc Receipts were only ti cars. The wheat market was not what could be called ntrong at any time. For a few rmnutta after the opening, on the strength of better cables, small receipts and a few buying- orders, there was a short-lived purt and the tone was Arm. Out later selling orders developed and In spite of good Influence of corn the market slowly sagged off. There was little of Importance In tho news, foreigners were not In the market to any extent. Shorts covered at times on reports of bullish sentiment In the southwest and of poor shipments re sulting from tho bad weather. Whon the market turned quiet short sellers were encouraged and helped to press prices somewhat. May opened a shade higher to a shAdo lower at 79c to 7874c, sold up to WWtWiO and closed Ho down at 73tfflJTaHc Local receipts were only 20 cars, und Min neapolis nnd Duluth reported 321 cars, mak ing a total for the thrco points of 841 cars, against 340 last week and 3D1 a year ago. Primary receipts were 414,000 bu., compared with 602,000 a year ago. Seaboard clear ances in wheat and flour equalod 333,000 bu. The strength In oats developed on tho corn bulge, on a good cash demand which has beon steadily developing and by cover ing by shorts. Tho market opened higher and strong, but compared to corn, was quiet. Commission houses bought well, but lato profit-taking eased prices. May sold s high ns 45c, and at tho close was firm, He higher, at Hc. Receipts wore very small nt 24 cars. Provisions opened with a show of strength, influenced by a good hog mar ket, tho grain strength and a fair show of buying orders. Offerings wcro not heavy, but prices lost after the early advance. Thoro were narrow fluctuations on selling Influences and tho close was easy. May pork closed Ro lower at $16.90, May lard Bo down at J9.4254 and May ribs Ec lower lit W.42',4. It was particularly noticeable that beef steers mado up the bulk of the receipts, and for that reason buyers had a good opportunity to pound tho market, which they were not at all slow to tako advantage of. The beef steer market opened very slow and packers were bidding a good dual lower than they wero yesterday. Sellers of course, would not make tho concessions asked, and as a result It was late beforo much of anything was done. It was evi dent, though, that packers wanted tho cattle, and It finally settled down to Just nbout a 10c decline. The quality of tho rtnVrliiER. ns 11 whole, was nulto satisfac tory as compared with the kinds that havo been on saio tor some time past, inui fact mado It more difficult than usual to dispose of tho commoner grades, and In t.omo cases that class ot cattlo wero more than a dime lower. There was a good, active, firm cow markot from start to finish, .Buyers were all lib eral huverj rlsht from the start, and as a result It was not long beforo tho bulk of the offerings were out of first handB. The proportion of cows and heifers to the totnl ronnlntM wnH not Inren tndny. which hclned out the selling Interests to a considerable extent. Bulls, veal calves and stags commanded steady prices where the quality was at nil good. Thcro were quite a few stockcrs and feeders, but anything showing flesh and quality mot with ready sale at good strong prices. There were none too many of that class of cattle to meet tho demand, The thin cattle of poor quality and lightweight were not wanted by anyone, aa the demand from tho country Is nlmoBt entirely for cattle of flesh, weight and quality, so that tellers had a hard tlmo to dlsposo of their undesirable grades.
