WHEAT LEADING SPECULATIVE MARKET
trmde Not Brisk, lint Higher Cables
nd Srnntr Offerings tinil flood.
CommlMlnn Ifonse Orilei's Stlm
atate Leadlna- Cereals,
CHICAGO, Jan. 29. There was a return
of bull conditions and bull fooling In the
train market today. Nervousness rcsultint
cm the recent raid on oats seemed to bo dis
sipated nnd nil markets closed near tlia
top prices. May wheat gained lQlc,
Hay corn Wtlic and May oats 2y4(B2jC.
Provisions closed 12Ho to 27c higher.
Whllo the trado in wheat was not mo
brisk as In corn nnd oats, tho volumo was
greater and this pit became, tho lcadlnK
speculative market. General bullish condi
tions prevailed. Cables were much higher,
though thero was no advanco over yester
day. Thcro was a fair export business and
tho southwest had bought well of red
winter wheat. Northwestern and local re
ceipts wcro very small and local offerings
were scanty. Coarse grains woro well up,
especially In tho western markets. Com
mission houses had very good buying ordors
and scalpers woro the only ones who sold
early. May opened H9o up at 78'B'?8Hc,
and mounted steadily, with but slight set
backs, up to 79c. Kansas City reported
llttlo movomcnt of wheat to market, be
cause Interior mills wero paying higher
prices. May closed strong, lWlc higher,
at 78f79c. Local receipts wero only eight
cars, ono of contract grade, and Minne
apolis and Duluth reported IK) cars, mak
ing a total for tho threo points of 177 cars,
against 316 last week and 299 a year ago.
1'rlmary receipts woro 379,000 bu com
pared to 442,000 last year. Seaboard clear
ances In wheat nnd llour equaled 333,000 bu.
The coahoard exported ten loads.
Th strength of corn was tho primary
influence on the Hoard of Trado today.
Tho traders had a number of things to
Influenco a return to bullish Rcntlmcnt.
Cables wero higher, there wero reports
of foreign buying, tho Argentine crop was
said to bo dnrnnged nnd local receipts wero
mall. Kunsas City messages declared th.it
nfter February 1 that market would not be
ablo to get more than fifty cars a day and
that present consumption Is 100 to 200 cars.
"Western offerings wcro very small and tho
cash demand there good. Mny opened firm,
l',ifflc higher, and sold up with hardly a
break to (WSitBftc. Tho closo was strong,
with May lMJle, higher, at 62ic. Receipts
wcro W cars. ,
Oats traders settled down Bgaln to tho
belief that the pit was solid, for tho tlmo
being at least. Liquidation by outsldo
'holders seemed over nnd all tho wenknesa
duo to tho recont forced sale of Kansas.
City traders long line seemed to havo been
overcome. At tho outset prices wero firm.
Offerings wjjro small, receipts wcro light
and commission houses had good buying
orders. Tho oats market was weak early,
and for a tlmo kept prices down, but tho
other markets were too strong and the
apparent tondoncy of all hands to buy soon
brought a big jump. May, which opened
W81o UP closed very strong, having mado
up nil Its recent loss. Tho net gain was
SH'SSHo at Receipts wore only 54 cars.
Markets for provisions gained material
strength from grains, though thero was a
natural flrmncsn from tho light receipts
and hotter price at the yards. Short cover
ing also helped in me upwara move, niny
tinrk closed at ton nrlces. 27Ue iid at $15.9o.
May lard 15c higher at $9.47 and May
ribs 12Vic up at $S.47. '
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat,
20 cars; corn, w cars; oats, 4a cars; nogs,

HOGS There wns n. morn liberal run of
hogs hero today than 011 Monday or Tues
day, but still the receipts were not what
would be called Iarco. Tho tendency or
prices continued downward, hut packers
wcro not able to take off more than a
nickel, and In u. good many cases not Hint
mucn. 'tno general market couki
irobably best be described by culling It
weak to 6c loner than yesterday. Trading
was not very active nt any time, but tho
hogs kept moving toward thu scales and
tno nuiK or tnu oircrlUKs wuh disposed of
In good (.ensoii. The most of tho better
weight hogs sold from $6.10 to $6.25. Me
dium weights sold Inruclv from 15.95 to
J6.10 and tho lighter loads went from $3.90
down. It was noticeable that tho quality
and weight ot the hogs today was much
better than wns tho caso yesterday, so that
ine maraot on paper iooks it anytning
higher than It did yesterday, In spite of
tho decline. Representative snlos:
