When orders for mils enn not. bo taken becnuse delivery Is desired beforo the Inst quarter of the yonr It would seem that new llgureg of output were as sured for 1902. , , Structural mills nre equally well occupied, having contracts for olllce buildings, fac tories, bridges, trnck clevntlon nnd other instructive work, Plntea and sheets arc available more promptly, .owing to en larged capacity of mills. Despite the pressure for nearly all steel products and pig Iron, there Is no tendency to forco quotations, but rather n stubborn reslstenco to cvory upward movement. This featuro of the market Is watched most Intently, as the abnormal activity would lose Its chief value ns an' Indication of prosperity If business were stimulated by excessive prices. Incidentally, foreign competition would also bo Invited nnd mills nbrond arc In n position to tako mil ndvnntago of any such opportunity. Textile Mnrkct. Raw wool la strengthened by tho higher prices secured nt the London sale. Footwear holds firmly to tho advance re ported last week, with only n moderate volume of business. Sole lenther is Arm, with stocks low, but somo othsr' varieties aro slightly easier. Belting butts ami harness leather have declined fully a cent. Upper leather Is fairly stendy. concessions being chiefly to move largo lots. Export snles of hemlock to, England arc liberal. Hides nre still declining, especially for Im ported goods. I- rom Atlantic ports for tho week the movement wns but 350.500 bushels, against 3.472,614 a year ago. Foreign buying of wheat, flour included. Other buyers 21 Totnls 1.S63 8,311 669 CATTLE There was a light run of cat tle here today even for a Friday and nB buyers seemed to have liberal orders to 111 competition on desirable grades of beef cuttle was sharp. Bids wcro generally, bet ter than they were yesterduy and as a re sult It did not take, long for sellers to dis pose of practically everything they had on hand. . . . Thero were only a few beef steers In cluded In the receipts this morning and the market could safely bo quoted strong and active. As Is generally tho coso on that kind of a market a number of sales looked u01Oc higher than tho same kinds sold lor yesterday. Owing to tho llpht supply of the better grades even the short-fed cat tle sold freely, this morning at stronger prices. . . Activity also characterized tho cow mar ket thls'moriilng and anything good com manded stronger prices with a number of sales Wjluc higher than tho same kind of cattlo sold for yesterday. The cattle began moving toward the scales at an early hour and every thing was soon disposed of. Thero was 11 good demand for bulls, veal calves and stags and wherever tho quality was satisfactory strong prices were paid. The stocker and feeder market, however, was In rather bad shape today. Specu lators still have a good many cattle on hand that they bought early In tho week and consequently they were not nnxious to bay more today. Then, too, the market Is generally slow and weak toward tho end of the week, so that sellers had consider able dllllculty In disposing or what they had. If thero hnd been nny choice heavy weight feeders on sale they would probably have sold readily ut steady prices, but tho light nnd common stuff such as was ollered was very slow sulo and considerably lower.
