sions closed l&c to 2oo down.
Trade In wheat wan very active over n.
somewhat narrow range. A Hllnht im
provement In cables and a marked falling:
off In Northwestern receipts started bet
ter prices. The country demand was very
good and most of the buying orders seemed
to bo for lone profits rather than for scalp
inn. The strength in the St. Louis market
was particularly helpful. Tho visible, ln
crenso of 5.bW"0 bushels had little, effect
on the. mnrket. ... , , .
Oood strength devoloping In corn added
to the bullish wheat Incentives and prices
advanced. Late In tho session, however,
long wheat In quantities was poured Into
the pit and though taken up nulckly by
bulls, depressed the market materially.
December opened steady, ranged between
T3T4C and "IVo and closed easy, fH'c lower
at 37ic. May opened unchanged, ranged
between 78c and 78"c and closed easy. ,
0'ic down Ht 7S7Mic. A)cnl receipts
were eeventy-elght cars, two of contract
grade. Minneapolis and Duluth reported
1,101 cars, making a total for the three,
points of 1.129 cars, against 1,36.) last week
and elghty-onn last year. Primary re
l rolpts were 1,490.0m) bushels, comnnnid
w'ltli W.( bushels last year. .Seaboard
clearances In wheat wero 83,000 bushels und
In flour 2l.on0 barrels.
Corn acted dull and weak the first two
hours of trade, while wheat was advanc
ing, fables were lower and them was con
siderable selling. The wheat ndvanco
made somt of the shorts nervous and on a
report of a sham chsIi demand In the
southwest and a good sample, trade hero
many prominent ones run, hurriedly to
cover. Tho advance wan sharp and de
cisive and prices reached the highest for
the crop. On the rise commission houses
wero liberal Kellers for profits and under
Increased offerings prices reacted aome

lUo. Ilerelpts wero 197 cars.
Oats were dull and featureless early,
but followed corn when that cerenl showed
strength, establishing a now record for
May. There was a moderato demand on
the part of tho shorts, country acceptances
wero small nnd shippers reported an activo
demand for small lots for tho eastern ac
count. Mav opened steady, ranged be
tween 4V'fr43Ue md 43To and closed firm,

Provisions wero heavy early on largo re

.MOVKMKS1IS OF STOCKS AND ROSIDS.
Yigornn I'p-rnrd Rntly When Irel-
dent'a Mrmose Appenrs.
NEW YORK. Dec. 3. Confusion nnd
hesitation wero reflected In the movement
of stock prices all day and the course, of
tho market did not persist In one. direction
for any leugtheuod period. Tho movement
during the morning wan dull, but leaned to
the side of depression, which gave way
about mid-day to a vigorous upward move
ment, when tho abstracts of the presi
dent's' messago mude their appearance. A
siump in Amalgamated copper and a riso
In call money rates unsettled the market
ngaln late In tho day, as was tho caso yes
terday. Tho demand to cover Hhorts which
followed the publication of the message
carried tho whole market upward with
couslderablo momentum, the prices for the
most prominent hiocks rising from 1 to -points
over last night, Tho sharp break In
foreign exchange carried the rato well
below the gold export point nnd relieved
apprehension that further gold would go
out this week.
Money was easier In London, Paris and
Berlin, nnd continental competition for
bills was reported from London. Largo
applications ut the subtreasury for with
drawn! of government bonds on deposit to
seenro circulation Is evidently preliminary
to tho offering of the bonds for redemption.
Tho payments of drafts ngalnst deposits of
several millions of gold nt Pacific const
points Is still pending. Tho movement of
Amalgamated Copper continued an In
scrutahlo mystery. Tho stock recovered
qulto vigorously in the morning, although
the omission of a customary extra dividend
by 0110 of Its subsidiary companies wna not
goncrnlly known when tho market closed
yesterday. The renewed break In the raw
copper market In Loudon to about Satur
day low level seemed equally without ef
fect on the stock. A break to a new low
record nt 71',c was without explanation,
beyond tho early unfavorable develop
ments, which seemed to bo Ignored. Tho
stock rallied slightly and then beenmo
henvy ngaln, but tho general market closed
tlrm.
Bonds wero Irregular. Total sales, par
value, J3.140.O00. United States bonds wero
all unchanged on the Inst call.
Tho Commercial Advertlr-cr's Loudon
financial cablegram says: Tho stock inar
kot was less firm today, although Invest
ment shares were harder. The' American
department was unsettled on reports of
cold shipments from tho other sldo nnd on
a rclapso of - to tho ton In copper to

closing hllghtly above tho worst, owing to

CATTLE Receipts or cattle today wero
fairly liberal, but the quality of the offer
ings was not very good. Good to choice
corn fed steers In particular wero scarce
and In reality there were no finished cattle
on the market. Advices from other points:
wero not very encouraging to the selling
Interests and as a result buyers took ad
vantage ot thn opportunity to pound tho
market wherever they could. It was rather
late beforo anything like a clearance wns
made.
Tho better grades of corn fed steers did
not sell fco much different from yesterday.
but aside from those the mnrket wan rather
slow nnd In n good many cases sales
looked a llttln lower than tho samo kind
of cattle sold for yesterday. The trade
lacked the snap nnd firmness that has
characterized it of late.
The cow market was vcrv uneven this
morning. In somo cases sales were made
that were fully steady, while In other In
stances cattlo sold fully a dime lower. Tho
netter grades or course moveu more treeiy
and ns a rule brought right around steady
R rices. Tho medium kinds and ennners,
owever, sold unevenly nnd were all tho
way from steady to a big dime lower.
There was an active demand this morn
Ing for corn fed bulls nt steady prices, but
the thin and common kinds were neglected
Veal calves sold at steady prices, und so
ulsn did stairs.
There were very few stockers and feeders
on salo today, but there was nn active do
mand for anything at all good. Where
thorn was a full load buyers paid good,
strong prices for them, but small bunches
nt eniirm. illrl not clninco hands no readily.
Common kinds were neglected tho same as
usual and did not sen any moro man
steady.
Western range steers brought closo to
steady prices where the quality wns good,
but common kinds were neglected. Range
rnwn nnri stockers and feeders fluctuated
Just about the samo as Is noted abovo for
tno natives, iwrprmriuun!? naiuo

HOGS There was nn enormous run of
hoes today at all market iinltifs und.ns n
result theM wa 11 break In prices. At this
point receipts were tno heaviest 111 somo
time and in fact this was cine of the bis
days 111 the history of the yards. In view
of thn liberal lccelpts packers did not
have to hurry about tilling the r orders
and started nut bidding just about 10c
lower than yesterday on the good heavy
welchts. Thcv did not mint tn nut' over
J8.9't for the best grades and ns seller's were
nsklng more money few londj changed
hands until the morning wns well ad
vanced. On lightweight stuff no bids nt nil
were madn oil the onefillii: market. When
srllors finally did cut loose It was found
that the heavyweights wero sclllnir rlcht
around J5.90 and a few sold from that up
to J6.00, with the. medium weights bringing
about J5.85. Light hogs sold from Jo.S2'-i
down. It was very dllllcillt, however, to
dispose of tho light hogs, ns there, wero
enough of the heavyweights to supply the
demand. H wns very lato belore anything
like a clearance was made. Rcprcscntullvo

FEVERISH OVER SHORTAGE
Cotton Exchange Is (7onvn1sed When
(internment Estlmnle Is
Disclosed.
NEW YORK, Dec. 3. Trading on thn
local Cotton exchange today was convuled
by the publication nt noon of the govern
ment's estimate of a short cotton crop for
the year. Tho figures wero 9.674,f") bales,
or nearly 2,0u0,0oo bales less thnn tho tradn
generally expected. Cotton Jumped J2 a
bale In as many minutes, amid scenes of
excitement rnrely seen. Brokers fought
with each other to cover short contrncts
and the pit brenmo a pandemonium for sev
eral minutes nrter the lejiort was received.
For three hours thereafter the volume uf
business transacted was enormous. After
thn first sharp advance nf nearly 40 polnti
a slump developed which carried price
nenrly halt tho way back to the quotations
prevailing before the llgures were mndo
known. Before the close, however, the
loss was regained nnd prices were nt their
highest
The market was exceedingly feverlh dur
ing the morning trading nnd brokers wero
disinclined to enter Into any commitments
prior to the publication of the government
report. The principal options were selling
about at 7.60 rents a pound, Within thrro
minutes nfter the opening wos recorded ad
vances of to points were recorded In all
the options. Every one talked 8-rent cottoti
and when the market closed brokers wero
wondering what Influence the report would
havo on the Liverpool market, for It s
generally understood that Liverpool esti
mates were exccexllngly bearish. The
houses with wire connoetlons In the south
did an Immense amount of business, mainly
profit-taking.
