seeking acceptance. Railway needs were
never as pressing, every form of equip
ment being sutight, and It Is possible that
more orders will be placed abroad. Labor
troubles and low water have added to tho
dlfllculty arising from car shortages, mak

output of coal Just when the export de
mand has become a factor of Importance.
Textile mills In New ICuglaiid are busy
and there Is no longer any fear of a labor
controversy at Fnll River. Print cloth
have ceased to be Inllated, standard widths
resinning the former quotation or 3c and
meeting with a fair demand. Domestic
buying of all staple cottons Is seasonably
quiet and tho views ot exporters are still
below those of seller. Recent declines In
the raw material have not weakened prices,
as there was no commensurate advance lu
goods when the cotton maikel was rising.
Reports from the south indicate that spin
dles are well occupied. In woolens there
Is a free movement of women's dress good
and orders are plentiful in heavyweight
lines for immediate delivery. The season
bus reduced inanufactiirers' stock of heavy
woolens and heavy worsted to a low point,
and recent unprecedented buying of raw
muteilal Indicate that orders come forward
freely. Footwarc Is llrm at last week's ad
vance, ami eastern makers are beginning
work on spring orders. Leather is held at
the best prices of the season and dry hides
rose further on heavy sales.
Weather conditions were the chief fac
tors in determining prlco changes of stuplo
product. Low temperature, in grain-growing
state? brought a higher level of quota
tion, corn rising 2.'lc above the llguro rul
ing at the corresponding date lust yeur.
These advance of more than 50 per cent
aro far lu excess of the ratio of loss In
production and established a fictitious price
level, which curtailed Atlantic exports 25
per cent.
On tho other hand wheat Is moving out
freely nt both coast., shipments from tho
United State for the week amounting 10
;,iV1,I72 bushels, against S.llO.tii)) bushel In
tho same week of 1900 nnd 3,912,203 lu 1&99.
Vigorous milling and foreign demands
caused a fnlr advnuco In price to about
Inst year' figure, despite the difference in
oulput.
Cotton weakened still further, port and
Interior movements Indicating a better crop
than was anticipated. At the lower price,
however, exports are heavy and tend to
prevent any serious reactions. Coffee ad
vanced deplto the record-breaking supply.
Failures for tho week numbered 213 lu
tho United States, agnlnst 201 last year,
nnd thirty-three In Canada, against eigh

CATTLK Receipts of cattle wete fairly
liberal today for this time of the week,
and, as was noted yesterday, tho propor
tion of cornfeds was larger than It has
neon for some lime post. There were very
few western range beef cattle lu the yards.
All kinds of desirable grades were In ac
tive demand ami no radical changes In
prices wero noted.
There were close to thirty cars of corn
fed steers 011 sale this morning, and, tho
demand being uotlve and the quality of
the offerings good, the market was Arm
and most everything was out of first hands
at ae. early hour. As 'the. sales below will
show, there were several bunches go-od
enough to sell from J6.00 up. Puckers of
course went after the better grades first,
but still sellers had no difficulty In dis
posing of tho commoner kinds nt fully as
good prices as were paid yesterday.
The cow mnrket did not have quite the
life to It today that characterized tlie trado
vesterdav. The better grades, however.
Mild at good, steady prices without ony
trouble. The medium kinds, though, were
neglected and In n good many Instances
sellers thought they did not get quite
steady price. Cnnners were also a Itttle
draggy todu.i.
iiiero was little or no chnnge noticeable.
In the prices paid for bulls, veal calves
and stags.
Tho stocker and feeder trade wns lu
verv satisfactory idinpe today for this
time ot the week. Speculators bought up
the better grades ,it steady prices nnd even
Iho commoner kinds sold more freely than
Is usually the case on Friday.
There were only a lew western rnngo
iiteers In the jards good enough for killers.
Those that were offered sold readily nt
steady prices. Ruiige cows of good lo
cholco quality were Just about steady, but
others were a little slow and weak. Stock
ers and feeders held right closo lo steady
nil around, not very many being on Bale.
