$200 payment ho accepted from tha Ameri
can Book company. Tho enclosed Is from
the March, 1S99, Issue of the Educational
Forum, nn educational journal published In
Chicago:
Omaha. Neb.j A school director of
Omaha recently preferred wrltton charges
against members ot tho board and tho su
perintendent In connection with the adop
tion of books of the American Book com
pany. Tho board decided that It could not
safely lgnoro tho charges, and resolved to
have them Investigated. In order that an
Impartial jury might bo had It appointed an
Investigating committee from Its own num
ber. After hearing the evidence and set
ting the sworn testimony ot an ngent ot the
American Book company that ho had novor
bribed any member of tho board, this com
nilttco sat on the casa and brought In n
verdict exonerating themselves nnd all the
board beforo the world. During tho Investi
gation It was brought out that Superintend
ent Pcarso was paid $200 by tho American
Book company to wrlto n Nebraska state
prcfaco to their geographies. Ho thereupon
recommended tho adoption ot thcso books in
the schools ut a much higher price than tho
now Rand & McNnlly geogrnphlcs, which
mauy competent Judges pronounce tho best.

Next Meeting.
The second of the monthly meetings ot the
Life Underwriters' Association of Nebraska
will bo held at the Her Orand hotel Monday
evening. At this meeting will bo discussed
the question of tho employment of "strik
ers ' and the practlco ot taking Dullness
from' brokers.
This question was precipitated at the last
meeting by ono Arm In the association,
which requested permission to withdraw
from tho agreement not to tako business
from certain persona. The Arm was re
quested to reconsider tho request and to
report Its determination at tho coming
meeting. It was then suggested that the
whole question bo thrown open for discus
sion and this suggestion prevailed.
One ot tho members snld: "It Is difficult
to distinguish between a 'striker' and a
person who, through friendly motives, turns
business In tho way of certain agents, and
I do not bellovo that the troublo can be
eradicated. Thcro Is no way of binding
members ot this association; and all we can
do will be to mako tho practlco as unpopu
lar as possible by adopting resolutions on
tho subject. If members do not Ilka to
abide by the resolutions It will bo Impos
sible to cocrco them, but few men will fly
