NEW YORK, Oct. l.-The Interest In to

Stock exchange members nway from the

volume of tho trading.
The dny's aggregate eale wns barely

wa very n.irrow for the most part. The
exceptions of any special note were In the
Industrial list ami among the dormant and
less Important railroad stocks. Liquidation
In Sugar wa the feature of the market,
following u sharp break In prices yesterday.
The usual lack of Information regarding
the movement wns one of Its features, Tho

that the Insider were liquidating on nn
prehensions of a chnnge In the sugar tariff
at the coming session of congress or of un
friendly legislation. Other rumors had It
that Insiders who had sold at recent high
prices were depressing the price to get back

Tho general feeling of distrust of the.
blind pool methods of the great Industrial
corporations, .which has reached an ncuto

decline of 14 to 2 points In Rrooklyn Tran

The waiting attitude of the market wa
partlv due to expectations of dividend nc

the presentation of a promised financial

Amalgamated Copper was rather tlrm, rls

quite notably llrm and gained a point on
rumors that the directors would Increase

other lirm spots In the railroad list nnd the
general undertono was rather firm on u

CATTLE The receipts of cattlo todny
were the heaviest of any day so far this
year. Most everything on sale wbb from
tho range country, and the offerings ns a
whole were nothing to brag of so far ns
nunlltv Is concerned. The big receipts gave
buyers aa opportunity to tnke their time
and also to pound the market a little, which
they, of course, proceeded to do. For that
reason it wns a little Into before very many
cattle had chanced hands.
There were only about fifteen cars of
cornfed steers on sale, and the tendency
was to neglect them for the westerns. Some
of the choicest bunches sold at Just about
steady prices, but the commoner kinds were
slow and generally be or ioc. lower man
yesterday.
A big proportion of the offerings today
was cow stuff. On tho start a few bunchi s
sold at Just about steady prices, but asldo
from those the market was right around
a dime lower, and In some cases more. Tho
choicer trades, of course, did not decline
nearly as mucti as tna commoner Kinds.
nulls, calves and stags were stendy to a
shade lower today, depending upon tho
quality.
mockers ana reeaers were aiso very men
tlful today, and the demand was very light
except ror tno cnoice heavy weights, and
also for the prime stockcrs. Cattlo an
swering to that description sold readily at
steady prices, but aside from those the
market wat extremely dull and sellers
found it nlmost Impossible to dispose of
what they had at any price.
Western cattle, of course, made up the
bulk of tho receipts, but thoro were not
very many or tne steers that were killers
Tho choicer grades of steors were In cood
demand nnd did not sell so much different
from yesterday, but anything but the best
was 5c or 10o lower. Cows were also right
around a dlmo lower, and ns Is noted above,
for the natives all but the good heavy feed
ers and the very best grades of stockcrs
were not only lower, but almost unsalable.
