Causes a Dull Market,
NEW YORK. Sept. 25. The stock mnrket
was dull under a rather drastic speculative
liquidation, Probably speculative losses,
Incurred as a result of the violent collapno
in Amalgamated Copper, was responsible
In largo part for the selling today, but other
considerations of n mere general character
played their part. Amalgamated Copper
Itself showed some evidence of support in
tho early dealings, opening unchanged and
rising 4t: over last night. There wns nlso
some resistance In this stock which set In
the Rer.eral market, but the weight of the
selling" pressure grew heavier und ns the
hour npnroarheil for the assembling of tho
Anaconda directors Amalgamated Copper
broke through Its previous low point on the
movement at 90 and sold ns low ns SSV
closing onlj a fraction higher at a net loss
of 4W, The decline wns accompanied by
the circulation of much statistical Informa
tion bearing on the copper trade. The same
Information, however, wns nvnllablo and
was circulated at tho lime the stock wns
moving up to above 121. The violent do
cllne In the prlre since Is what gives forrj
nt the present time to those statistics and
old recollections of the collapse of several
yenrs ago of tho secret syndicate which at
tempted to control the world's copper prod
uct were revived.
The passing of the customary extra divi
dend on Anncnndn Mining, although ex
pected, added to the weakness of both thoo
stocks. In the Rcnernl mnrket the Junior
Vanderbllts were ndvnneed sharply after
the opening, but It soon became evident
that largo realizing was going on nt other
points,
Ultimately all attempt at support of the
mnrket was abandoned ntid brokers who
have recently assumed this task were op"ti
sellers all around the room. The con
spicuous operator who has been supposed
to direct the s'ipport of the market was
credited with having turned to the bear
side. The declines all through the list ran
to I nnd 2 points nt the least. Missouri

There was no disturbance In Mm monev
market beyond that caused bv the railing
for additional collateral on loans, due to
the shrlnknge In vnlue. but the liquidation
wns accompanied by the paying off of loans
on n large scale. Although London took
the buying side this morning exchange
continues to advance. The demand for ex
change Is In the nature of short covering.
The operation In effect Is the payluu off of
loans In foreign markets by domestic bor
rowers who counted upon large supply of
cotton nnd grain bills normnl to this season
to cover former sales of exchange a, a
profit. Hut cotton Is being held nt tho
routh for lilnher rates and the grain de
mand Inst week had become so smnll ns to
lend to open outline of frelpht rates.
The admitted demoralization In the east
bound freight slt.iatlon heavllv discredits
the much vaunted community of Interests
ns security against Just that development
and had n wlde-reachlng effect on specula
tion. Although the sentiment In exchange

Jo Kovernment bond redemption the sub

Railroad bonds were but little affected by

being mixed.

CATTLE There was a ble sunnlv of cat
tie today at all market points, but prices
held their own and anything at all de
sirable met with ready sale. At this point
the big end of the receipts were mndc up
of cok stuff and feeders, comparatively
few beef steers being offered.
Packers started out early this morning
and paid good, steady to strong prices for
the tew cars of cornfed steers that wero
on sale. Owing to the limited supply It

kinds, of course, did not move quite as
freely, but still even those eold fully ns well

Cows were In good supply, but packers

and on such kinds little or no change In
prices wns noted. Owing to tho liberal re

get quite as good prices as they did yes

chance In the mnrket.
Hulls, calves and sttrgs nlso sold In Just
about the same notches they have all the
week.
Good heavy feeders were In demand this
morning nt steady prices. Prime stockcrs

as good prices as the samo kinds sold for
yesterday. Common stuff, though, and also
the medium weight cattle wero not wanted
by anyone and ns a result they wero prnc-

Although the bulk of the offerings was
made up of western range cattlo only a

enough for killers. Tho demand was active
and strong prices wore paid, tho high point
of the season being renched. Cows wero

if they were not. Choice feeders sold
steady, but common stuff wns almost un

and feeders. The mutton erodes that wero
offered wero picked up In good senson at
fully steady prices. Lambs, howover, were
siow saie, as pacKers cud not seem nt an
anxious for supplies nnd were generally
bidding a little lower than yesterday. Sell
era did not feel llko making tho concessions
asked nnd as a result It was lato before
much wns done.
Tho demand for feeders continues of quite
liberal proportions nnd steady to strong
prices were paid today for both wethers
aim lamns.
