.MOVEMENTS UK STOCKS AMI IIONDS.
Etlilcners of Support of .niiilnnintcd
Copper Appenr.
NEW YORK. Sent 21. There were indl-
cations of support tor Amalgamated Copper
by Inside Interests today for the Arst time
since tho reduction In tho dividend was an
nounced Inst Friday. Tho rapid downward
course of the block was thereby arrested
and the whole market showed signs of re
lief from tnn nervous strain engendered uy
Amalgamated Coppers violent decline.
There was llttlo actual news to tako ac
count of In considering tho movement of
tho day's prices, ns they were governed al
most exclusively by technical causes grow
ing out or the collapse in Amaignmaieu
Conner. Conner mining stocks all over the
world showed the effect of this development
this morning nnd spot copper In London
scorctl n violent decline on account of n
nrevalont rumor that the Amalgamated
company was nl.out to reduce its selling
price in oruer to worK on an accumuinuon
of Its pronuct.
Selling by foreign holders of American se
curities, Including rnllrond stocks, was an
Important Influence In tho opening decllno
here, which reached from 1 to 2 points In
places. Amalgamated Copper sold nt 90
during tho Arst few minutes of trading,
which Droved to be the low point or tno
ilny. It was after tho stock had steadied
that the severest pressure developed against
the general list. A promiscuous spilling out
of stocks cnrrled tho level of the prominent
raiiroaus nnu specialties irom l io .' neiow
last night, tho Pnclttcs, southwesterns,
grnngers nnd Sugnr being tho principal suf-
icrers,
It was believed that recent losses In Amnl-
fiamatcd Copper wete responsible for tho
qtlldntlon elsewhere. Several alarmist
stories nut out this morning Indicated tho
exhaustion of ammunition by the bears.
The support developed In Amalgamated
Copper nnd the postponement of tho meet
ing of the directors of tho Anaconda com-
nanv. which. It Is feared, would result In
nnnther dividend reduction completed tho
dtscomtlturo of tho benrs and they covered
nenvuy (luring uio inner part ot tno uny.
Tho earlier declines were largely wined
out nnd n fnlr proportion of net gains cs-
lanusncd.
Points of conspicuous strength wero tho
Vnnderbllts, Manhattan nnd Wabash. A
feature of tho day was tho selllnc of stocks
controlled by lending capitalists by brokers
usually employed uy oiner leading capital
ists, which served to emphasize tho dread
felt yesterday of a renuwed outbreak of
hostilities between financial powers. A
good deal of 'he selling of Amalgamated
Copper was of this character and seemed
to bo designated to force outside support
of this stock. In the lato buying move
ment practically all of tho larger sellers of
tho last few days were represented. Thu
selling of stocks for London account mndo
nn nctlvo demnnd for exchange, which
forced rates up u fraction from tho gold
Import point, Tho hnrdcnlng of discounts
In Ilerlln was nn Influence In tho samo di
rection. Cotton bills continue scarce in tho
exchange market, but there Is a bettor sup
ply of grain bills.
The rnllrond bond market was quite nc
tlvo nnd weak In sympathy with stocks.
Total sales, par value, $2,260,000. United
States 3s nnd the old 4s advanced V4 per cent
on the Into call.
Tho Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says: Tho slump In
copper shares caused n genernl flatness In
the mnrket. Tlntos nnd Anaconda wero
heavily sold for tho New. York account, tho
former touching 47i nnd closing nt 48U, or
a net loss or 3ft. Thu latter closed nt tho
worst 7ft or 1 point down for tho day.
There Is a genoral anxiety hero regarding
tho overstocked condition of thn Amnlun.
mated Copper company, but somo suspect
a ruso on tho part of Mr. Rockefeller.
American stocks movel with copper shares,
but tho account was so smnll thm them
was llttlo pressure to sell until there was
a point break In these. Now l'ork offered
sliver on tno weaitness ot copper.
The following are the closing prices on
the New York Stock exchange:

CATTLE Tho snnnly of cattle nt tho
different markets this morning was quite
liberal, but still prices held up in
good shnpn and at this point tho
market was nctlve and fully steady on any
thing desirable. Both packers and feeder
buyers wero good bidders, so It was not
long boforo the bulk of the offerings hnd
changed hands.
The supply of cornfed steers was limited
to about a dozen cars, and tho market could
safely be quoted strong and nctlve. As
high as $6.25 wns paid today, which Is the
highest price of tho season. The cnttlo
wero considered tho best that hnvo been
seen hero slnco tho llvo Btock show he d
last fall.
Tho cow market was well sunnllcd. there
being about seventy-flvo cars on salo. Buy
ers tooK hold in good shape, though, and
paid steady prices for anything desirable,
so that the market was active. If there
wero any of tho cattle neglected at all it
was tho medium grades, but still sellers
did not experience much difficulty In getting
satisfactory prices ror wnat thoy had.
There wns practically no change notice
able today In tho prices paid for hulls,
calves and stags.
Tho supply of stockers nnd feeders was
quite generous today, but tho demand for
heavy feoders of good quality was sum
cient to take all that wns ofterod at stendy
to strong prices. Prlmo stockers wero
also ready sellers, hut the common stuff
nnd the medium weight cattle wero almost
unsalable at any price, tho same aa has
been the case for somo llttlo time. Tho
demand for that class of cattle from tho
country Is exceedingly light, so that specu
lators are very cautions about buying thorn.
Thero wero not very many western cattle
this morning that were good enough for
killers. Thoso that did arrive sold nt good,
strong prices, and wero out of first hands
In good Heason. Cows sold at practically
steady prices, and so, also, did desirable
feeders. Other kLntls, though, wero very
slow and weak. Representative sales:
