NEW YORK, Sept. 4. Today's stock mar
ket was an almost exclusively professional
affair, with evidence of a partlc patlon 1 by
tho speculative party, which Is rather
vigueiy characterized as "the wesb-rn con
tingent" by the traders about the Stock
exchange. This party has been active at
Intervals in the stock market ever since
the forn crop prospects became an element
In the speculation. They continued the
salo of stocks this morning, but early be
came Impressed with the notable paucity
or the ofTerlngs, which brought around
tho pressure thuy put on the market and
reversed their position to the buying side.
The free offerings of corn today, which
were iU sulllcleiitly attractive terms to at
tract some demand for export of that grain
for the llrst tlmi In a considerable period,
may have had an Influence on these cover
ing operations.
The day s movement of prices seemed
largely due. however, to maneuvers by con
tending professional operators, following
yesterday's sharp break, which In Itself was
apparently a testing operation by tho
capitalists, who have supported the mar
ket lor some tlmo past. They seemed
satlslled with their demonstration with the
small amount ot stork Impending over the
market tor dlslodgement, and their brokers
wero largo buyers again today, especially
of United States steel stocks, in which they
were Jolmd by tho "western contingent.'
These stocks did not move upward until
there had been sharp advances In Colorado
Fuel und Tennessee Coal, based upon the
assumption that their business was largely
Increased as .1 result of the entorced Idle
ness of United States Steel corporation
works.
Chicago Great Western continued strong,
on rumors of buying for control In the In
terest of tho western railroad community
of Interest and the recent large accumula
tion of Mexican National was unabated
today. Tho strong tone permeated the
whole market us the day progressed and
the tlual hour showed many of the mar
ket leaders among the grangers, Paeitlcs,
Southwesterly, coalers and specialties,
Mom 1 to 3 points over last night's close
level.
Conditions In the money and exchange
markets were practically unchanged. Call
loans again touched 4 per cent and the ab
sorption or Hinds by tho subtreasury con
tinued, amounting since Fllday to $2,332.
000. Sterling exchange steadied this morn
ing ns it consequence of working oil the
accumulation exchange bills over the holl
la. The Hank of England advanced Its
selling prleo both lor bar gold and Ameri
can eagles, thus lowering the point to
which sterling bills must fall before gold
Imports offer a profit. Sterling exchange
weakened utresh In the forenoon, thus per
haps helping the rally In stocks.
The rullioad bond market was dull and
narrow. Total sales, par value, $1.4!0,0oo.
United Stntes bonds were unchanged 011
thu lust call.

CATTLE There was considerable de
crease In thu supply of cuttlu at this mar
ket us compured with yesterday, as the
table of receipts given abovo will show. Tho
bulk of the receipts was madu up of killers,
thougli I litre wero qutlo a luw leeuerb 011
fculc. Thu demand all around was In good
shape, so that tho general market was .ie
tlvo and not much different from jestur
day. Cornfcd steers of good to choice quality
were rcudy sellers today nt fully steady
prices. 1'nckers ail seemed to want a lew,
and ns the supply was limited practically
everything wus out of llrst hands In good
season. Tho commoner grades were, of
course, not sought after as much, but ntlil
they sold fully as well as they did yester
day. There were about twcnty-llvo cars of cows
nnd heifers id thu yards this morning, and
buyers took hold In good shape aim pa d
good steady prices for practically all
grades. Sellers found little dllllculty In
disposing of what they hud, and the liens
wcro about empty by tho middle of ih.'
forenoon.
Hulls, calves and stags all sold in Just
nbout yesterday's notches.
Stockcrs and feeders of good quality
wero ready sellers today, and particular, y
was that truu of thu cattle showing weight
as well as quality. The common stuff w.ib
neglected, the came as usual, us the demand
from tho country for that cinss uf stuff
Is very limited.
Western rangers, of course, mado up tho
big end of tho receipts today. Packers wero
all anxious for steers, and thuy paid fully
steady prices for anything at all good.
Cows wero ulso In good demand and com
manded steady prices. There was no
change noticeable in the prlcs paid for
bulls, canes und stags, ami stockers and
feeders could also bo quoted luuy steady.
