ture at Orand Island was in the elly yester
day at the offlce of tho local weather bureiu.
Mr. Corbln owns a farm near Grand Island,
on which he conducts experiments in meth
ods of planting and raising grain and other
farm products recogntted as suitable to
this climate. According to his statement
he has discovered this yesr a plan for tho
cultivation of corn which will place tho
farmer who adopts It at great advantage
during seasons of drouth. Speaking of Iho
new Idea he said-
"This spring I determined to try a differ
ent method of planting corn to see what
could be gained by changed conditions, t
had a small Held carefully prepared. Then
I ran the lister over the field in tho usual
manner. After this was done I took a
chrckro- corn planter and planted tho corn
so that It fell at the bottom of the lis'ed
rows.. After the corn was planted mo
field was harrowed smooth and rolled. In
a short time the' corn appeared and it was

"There Is on thing that people in east
ern Nebraska must get out of their mind,
and that is tho mistaken Idea that there is
no corn in the state. Hall county Is be
llered to be damaged. as badly as any county
tn the state, and before coming to Omaha
I went through several fletds. They aro
damaged no doubt of that; but there will
be corn In Hall "county ami more than many
people believe.
"The hot weather of July was not an un
mitigated curse to the state and tho farm
ers are going to llnd that out next yetr.
Last spring the fields In my part of tho
state were overrun with chlnchbugs and
the peat seemed to be Increasing in bpi'e
of all that could be done to exterminate
them. This summer when the wheat was
cut they crawled Into the cornfield and
down near the heart of the corn. The hot
days came and It was noticed that the bugs
were not doing tho damage that was ex
pected. We did not know iho reason until
the other day, when I went out to get some
bugs to send to Lincoln to have them Inocu
lated with disease. I found very few bugs
and on opening the blades of corn found
hundreds of them In each hill killed by mo
heat, while of live bugs I could only nnd
scattering ones In the fields."
J. O. Moore, deputy United States mar
shal, has returned from a trip to Otoo
county, bringing back with hlra specimens
of corn picked on five farms in the western
pati ot that county. There are about as
many varieties as there were farms visueu
and all show the effects of tho drouth. Tho
early yellow varieties seem to have been
damaged to the greatest extent, few of tho
ears of these varieties being worth
harvesting. Lata white corn Is
much better, although thre wero no per
fect ears found at any of the farms. Tho
best specimens secured were from a field
planted so late that the owner expected
but little moro than fodder, and on which
the tassels are yet green. In every case
but this one the corn U glazed and noth
ing can Intervene to lmprovo tho condi
tions. The appearance of the corn before
being shucked is very deceptive, cars hav
ing no grains upon them at all looking in
the shucks like full ears. Through tho sec
tion v.'slted by Mr. Moore, one of the best
corn sections of the southeastern part of
the state, tho average yield will not, In
his oplnlon.be over twenty bushels to tho
aero.
"But do not think that the farmers aro
In a desperate condition." said he, when
referring to his trip and exhibiting tho
corn. "The man who has the worst corn
of the lot has S.000 bushels of last season's
corn stored away and the price he will
receive from this will mako up for his
losses on the present season's crop and a
large number of the farmers In that part
ot the state are In the same condition."

One of the greatest freaks of nature has
recently been discovered close to the Im
mense tunnel that is ncarlng completion
on the line of tho Southern Pacific running
along the boundary line of Los Angeles and
Ventura counties, says the San Francisco
Call. Some workmen employed by the
company discovered an Immense rock that
Is a perfect Image of a man's head. A
photograph was taken of this freak ot
nature by one of the workmen who had a
camera In his potsseslon, and it was sent
to Chief Engineer Hood of. the Southern
Pacific. The photograph has been shown to
numbers of scientists and globe trottors
and they all claim that there Is no rock
in existence that Is such a perfect repre
sentation of a man's head. The rock will
no doubt be looked upon in tho future as
one of tho points of Interest tn California.

that the sphinx of California took a long
time to be discovered, but that tt ts older
than the Egyptian sphinx and was cot made
by man.
