CUICAtiO, Aug. ti. WenkncBS In corn nnd
a weaker .export weakened wheut loil.iy
unci September closed lower. Com
closed lc down nml oats ic depressed, Pro
visions lit the close showed a decline of lWi
1214c to 20c.
While the Liverpool market showed some
ndvunce It was disappointing when com
pared to Hid bulge In wheat here yester
day. In addition it wu hellmcd that the
recent heavy movement to the other side
would show a decrease when the seaport
were heard trorn, These considerations in
u restricted market line) their tiuural effect
at the beginning ot business, September
opening Hwlio under yesterday at 70 V to
70V4c. On covering a small line of short
wheat the price was run up to 7uic within
Jlvo minutes of the opening, for some time
thereafter the tone was weak, sympathy
ith corn and the heavy receipts being de
pressing factors, Selling was on an ex
tremely moderate scale, hut prices did not
sternly till September was quoted at 9'c.
A sharp rally to 70V- followed reports of
heavy export sales, hut the absence of con
firmation of these reports resulted In nn
equally sharp decline to 7oc, nml the close
found the market wenk, September M'-nC
tinder yesterday nt 7(n70'c. Homo atten
tion whs given tidings from the northwest,
where It was said the weather had wrought
nome damage, It was claimed that In some
fecttons where twenty-live hushols per
acre hnd been expected from eight to llf
teen bushels only would be threshed. Im
porters reported 25 carloads taken. Sea
board clearances In wheat and Hour were
tqunl to 95,m bushels, while primary lc
celits were sit, (km bushels, compared with
Wtj.too bushels last year. Local receipts
were 513 cars, Kl of contract grade. Mm
Iieapolls and Duluth reported 137 ears,
ugalust 10S last week and iill a year iiko.
Ilradstreet's world's vlslblu showed an In
creaue of 1.273,0"0 bushels.
Nervousness caused a rather narrow
fluttering of prltes In the corn market, but
while messages from the west were of the
usu.il gloomy tenor the general feeling that
nil drouth damages had been liberally ills
counted was the ruling factor In the mar
ket. The volume of trade was compara
tively small, a condition tending to weaken
the hnnds of holders whose margins were
being thinned. In the day's trade snots of
strength were observable, but this was
due to wheat chlelly. When wheat turned
easier the corn market took the cue with
kucIi readiness that it was soon Inlluenclng
the former market. September between
. KiTsC and 57',4c and closed lc under yester
day at 6CT(,c. Receipts were 233 cars.
With purely local conditions governing
nentlment the oats market ruled dull and
narrow. The corn weakness was. of course,
lliduontlal, but there was sufficient local
, Hiipport on the breaks to hold prices com-
narntlvcly steady. September sold between
hue nnd afic and closed ?c lower at attic.
' Itecelpts were 173 cars.
I'rovislons for September delivery ruled
ensler In sympathy with hob 'pr ices and
also with corn, Pork closed 20c lower nt

CATTLE There was 11 liberal run of
cattlu here today nnd nonrly everything
wns on tho natlvo order, not enough west
ern grassers being otTercd to make n test
of the market on that class of cattle.
The general tendency was to buy the tat
etuff lowci.
Receipts Included about GO cars of beef
steers and the market was rather slow
und weak. Some or the better grades sold
ut JiiBt about steady prices, but the com
moner kinds sold generally a dlmo lower.
The half-fat stuff In particular was hard to
dispose of ut nny price, ns packers did not
seem to cure for that class of cattle.
There wero practically no western range
beef cattle offered to make a test of tho
market.
There were quite a few cows and heifers
on sale todny. about 35 cars being offered.
The samo as In the case of steers, somo of
the best corn fed cows sold about steady,
but the general run of grassers was lower.
As compared with last Friday, it is safe to
call the market 1541250 lower, so that tho
advance of last week Is very largely lost.
There was not much change noticeable
In tho prices paid for bulls today and venl
calves also sold about steady, but stags
were weak.
There was a decided Improvement noticed
todny In the demand from tho country for
yearlings of good quality and ns a result
values on that class of cattle were a llttln
stronger. The heavy cattle did not seem
to bo as ready sellers and tho common
stuff of all weights was neglected, and cer
tainly no better prices were paid, Huyers
seem to wunt tho good cdltlo and they
want tho lighter, weights. Representative
