HHEEDING NEW KINDS OF WHEAT.
Prof. Siittliiiiiii of WnaliliUJtun TrjInK
i Pruiinuiitc Nmv Vnrlrttes.
l.ln nt
Prof. W. J. Splllmnn of the Waahlngton
Agricultural College nnd Experiment na
tion at Pullman Is originating now va
rieties of wheat particularly ndnpted to
eastern Washington. Ho is ono of thrco
or four men In the United Stntes who nro
engaged In the prnpogatlon of new vnrlotlcs
of wheat.
Prof. Spllnutn has been trying to get a
variety of wheat that would ho suited to
tho conditions of eastern Washington tho
Palnuso country. Winter wheat Is tho
crop for that country and all the varieties
now grown there shatter so badly that tho
harvester leaves ou tlio ground two or
tlirco times as much as would bo sulllclent
for seed. Another fault of the wheat now
grown there Is that tho straw has not tho
strength to stand up on rich land or
whero storms muy strlko It and tho grain
frequently lodges so badly that It cannot
bo harvested by the ordinary means.
Thirdly, the wheat now grown haj too
thick u shell or bran und Is none tooJjlga,
in filuton. To get n variety that witr not
shatter, that shall huve straw that will
stnud up, that shall have n thin uhrll nnd
bo high In gluten contents in other words,
to get wheat that shall he exactly adapted
to eastern Wnnhliigtcn U tho object of
Prof. Splllmnu's experiments nnd his work
lu this lino hns proceeded so fnr nnd so
satisfactorily that there is little doubt ot
ultimate success.
In taking up this work Prof. Splllmnn
made more than 300 crosscn of two vnrlotlcs
of spring wheat grown lu that country
upon six varieties of winter wheat. Tho
spring varieties were tho Little Club nnd
tho Ileil Gli? ff. which nro hardly dis
tinguishable from the other, nnd tho win
ter varieties were Lancaster, ThoUn, Tas
mania lied, Oregon Club, Valley nnd Jones
Winter Fife. From tho more than 300
successful crcoBCs Prof, Splllmnn has se
lected twelve now varieties that possosa
tho characteristics desired nnd ho must
now continue selecting nnd planting until
ho shall get the lyres established. It
tnlcos flvo years to establish a typo that
will breed true, after tho desired variety Is
obtained by crossing. Careful selection
must bo made each year of tho grain that
possessor, In highest degree tho qualities
eought, nnd the continuation of this
process for Ave yearn is sufficient to estab
lish n type that will transmit its charac
teristics with rcanonablo fidelity. Tho
longer a typo Is established the harder It
Is to chnngc It. In malting crpssca tho
variety that hns bocn longest established
transmits moro of Its qualities than doea
tho younBf r variety. A great ninny varieties
may bo obtained from a single cross and
It Is hy selection nnd cultivation that a
variety possessing tho desired qualities Is
at length established.
For strength of straw Prof, Splllmnn
has drawn ou another plant, the spelt,
which grows nt the top of n vigorous stulk,
a rough grain suitable for cattle teed. Ten
vnrlotlcs of spelt arc grown in eastern
Washington. Established types of wheat
and spelt will not crossbreed, but when
varieties of wheat aro crossed among them
selves and vnrltlcs of spelt crossed among
themselves It Is found that tho resulting
progeny of the two plants mny be Interbred.
Tho largo number of hybrids rcsultlnc from
this cross breeding will present almost
every characteristic Imaginable. Most of
tho strong' straw will probably havo In
ferior grain and most of tha weak straw
will probably bear tho good grain, nut
It Is likely that some of tho strong straw
will bear excellent grnln. When tho hy
bridizer finds thu qualities he wants, it
Is his business to solrct the moat per
fect specimens and continue tho propa
gation to establish tho type, Prof. Spill
man, hnvlng obtained a hybrid of wheat
and spelt with qualities specially adapted
The Siiniu Old Slury,
J. A. Kelly rclutcs an cxpcrlenco similar
to that which has happened In almost every
neighborhood in tho United States and has
been told and rc-told by thousands ot
others. He says! "Last summer I had
an attack of dysentry and purchased a hot
tlo of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and
Diarrhoea Remedy, which I used according
to directions and with entirely satisfactory
results, Tho trouble was controlled much
quicker than former attacks when I used
other remedies." Mr. Kolly Is a well known
citizen of Henderson, N. C. For sole by
all druggists.

savages fell to wrangling among them
selves, somo being for mayonnaise and
other.? for a curry, that tho missionary
was warned of tho fato that awaited him.
"What!" ho rrled, In tho utmost alarm.
"Certainly you do uot proposu eating mo
off my own tablo?"
Tho simple folk shrugged tholr shoulders.
"Wo nro no donation party," protested
they, "that wo should ent you out of houso
