Dullness prevailed durlnK the early pat t

erablo trade later. Wheat opened (ic
lower at 70Uc for July on depressed tallies
and continuation of conditions favorable to
the nrowltiB crop. Covering by shorts
caused an advance to "0-V. the high point
of the day. Hrndstreet'H statement of the
world's visible supply was a disappointment
to bulls, showing 133.000 bit. Increase In
stead of a large decrease, and tinder free
offerings the market declined to rSic.
Oood .shipping demand, together with re
ports of too much rain In Knnsns, brought
about a rally toward the close and llnal
figures for July were firm and unchanged
at 70Vc. Twenty loads were reported taken
for export, and seaboard clearances were
481,000 bu., compared with 427.C0U hit. a year
ago. Minneapolis and Duluth reported .113
cars, against 330 last week and 311 a year
ago. Ix)cal recclptB were 124 cars, four of
contract grade.
The com pit was quiet, with a noticeable
absence of selling orders. The market was
firm and slightly higher most of the session
on account of the small receipts of contract
quality While weather was generally aus
picious, the growth and nppenrance of the
plant, according to general reports from
the country, left much to be desired, and
there whs nothing encouraging enough In
the prospect for the next crop to offset the
effect of the present small supply. July
ranged between 43c and 131V, closing WMc.
Improved arid steady at 43Vrt434c. Local
receipts were 293 cars, four of contract
grade.
Oats were active and received considerable
support from the Interests which were the
best sellers yesterday It looked like un
expected weakness at the opening, but
commission houses and local shorts soon
bid July up a fraction over yesterday's high
line. Crop advices were bail, lust being
common. It looks ns If local long Interests
have, accumulated a large line of July. July
had a narrow range, selling between 2Sc at
the opening and 21'jc, closing steady and
unchanged at :'Sc.
An active and eager demand for lard gave
tho provision market a strong tone, carry
ing up prices of pork and ribs to a strong
close, RuyltiR of lard was on such a scnle
that shorts took alarm and helped by their
purchases to swell tho price ns well as the
volume of trading. Julv nork rantred be-
ntween $14.8214 and J14.8"i,4, closing 20c higher
ini trie latter ngure: juiy laro ranged be
tween J8.(10 and 18.70. closlnir at 18.70. 15W
l'.4c higher: July rlhs ranged hetween S
nnu jx.iwitf.isw. closing at tne latter with
a gain of "M710c.
Estimated receipts tomorrow: Wheat. 40
cars; corn, lih cars; oats, Kj cars; hogs,

MOVEMENTS IX STOCKS AND nO.MlS.
Market Influenced by Doubt Snrrnnnd
tna St. Pnnl Denl.
NEW YORK, June 18.-The pressure to
sell stocks was effectual In breaking
through resistance In the market today nnd
carrying the general level of prices to a
materially lower basis. There were 11 few
spots of strength persisting and there were
occasional successful efforts to check the
decline which resulted In rallies, by driving
the room shorts to cover. The closing was
quite active and weak. The most potent
Influence In the market was the state of
doubt engendered as to the real status of
the much discussed St. Paul deal. Investi
gation by some Independent authorities
elicited the Information that negotiations
were In progress for bringing St. Paul within
the scope of tho community of Interest
working out In the western railroad world,
but many of the specific assertions which
have been set afloat by the very large co
operative contingent, which Is making the
St. Paul project the medium for their
operations, were stripped to pieces. Tho
most Important of these was In the isser
tlon that 4 per cent bonds were to be of
fered tor St. Paul nt the equivalent of 200.
Today's version of the project carried It no
further than an effort to secure the co
operation or the Morgan-Hill holdings In St.
Paul with the Harrlman-Kuhn-Locb hold
ings In exchange for co-operntlon of tho
holdings of the latter Interest with those of
the former In Northern Pacific. The hold
ings of the Morgan-Hill syndicate in St.
Paul dating bnck to the efforts to secure
control previous to the purchase or Rur
llngton are known to be large. Another
well defined rumor had It that n hitch had
occurred In the contract alleged to have
been made to sell a large block of St. Paul
stock to the 1'nlon Pacific. St. Paul de
clined nearly 5 points hs n rcsnlt of these
rumors and Union Pnclflc about 3 and
closed within 11 small fraction of the low
est. Missouri Pacific suffered from realiz
ing on the ground that all tho good news
regarding the stocks was out, and the Inde
pendent steel companies were notable suf
ferers from the same cause, tho decline In
Colorado Fuel reaching 10 and In Tennessee
Coal 07;. Amalgamated Copper reacted 3
from yesterday'a upward spurt, but rallied
strongly on the hope of a Judicial decision
today In favor of the company's merger
project. The rally was mostly lost In the
fate reaction of the market.
The bond market was moderately active
and Irregular. Total sales, par value, 4.010,
00i). United States bonds were all unchanged
on the Inst call. .

CATTLE There was not what might bo
called v heavy run of cattle here today, but
still tho market wna very slow and lower.
Tho reason seemed to be that packers
claim prices did not go down nearly as
much here last week as they did at other
points and as a result they have to take
off hero this week. Sellers, of course, did
not iikc ino luea 01 lower prices and as a
result trndc today was very slow and lower
all around.
Packers started out bidding 10015c lower
on all grades of beef steers. Sellers, how
ever, held on and the cattle that did change
hands were on the average about a dime
lower. Some of the choicest bunches were
perhaps not over a nickel lower, but to off
set that the commoner grades were In some
cases more than a dime lower and In fnct
sellers said. It was almost Impossible to get
a bid on such kinds. It was late before
many cattle had changed hands, as both
buyers and sellers were slow to make con
cessions, ,
The cow market wns also very slow and
lower,, Puckers wanted to get their supplies
10015c lower and while sellers held on tor
better prices they were unable to get them
In the majority of casea. The decline was,
of course, greatest on the less desirable
bunches and on grasscrs, but still the de
cline was general and covered the good as
well as tho bad.
Bulls also took a drop today In sympathy
with the Jecllne on cows and steers. Stags
wero also about a dime lower and veal
calves' were slow nnd weak.
Stockers and feeders were more plentiful
today than' for some little time past and
buyers took advantage of the opportunity
to pound tho market a little. As compared
with last week values are at least 15c lower
and In some cases more. The commoner
kinds wtre very slow Bale. Representative
