ST, PAUL'S ONE HOME RUN
It Tnkii from Omaha a Gams that Either
Side Beiemd,
NOBODY MAKES A SUGGESTION OF ERROR
Clrnnr- Sort of J'lny, nnd In the

Not a blemish marred the base ball game
at the Vinton Street park yesterday, and
tbo only pity wan that the men from St.
Paul got one run, whllu the Omahana se
cured none. It was ono of thoso paradoxi
cal things, tbo victory seemingly going to
tbo teHtn which didn't do tho work. Just
one ruun won It for the Saints, and that was
Tarkcr, tho right Holder, who by a home
run, which cleared tho fence, earned the
right In the fifth Inning to trot around the
bases.
In almost every other way Omaha ex
celled, although tbo play was absolutely
orrorlrss on both sides. Pitcher Herman
did the work of his lite, allowing but three
hits, wlillo tbo locals pounded seven off
McOlll Again, Herman struck out six men
to McOIII's five, and, ulthough he allowed
three bases on balls to McGlU's one, none
of tho trio mado any difference, ns they
were all In Innings that wcro blank as to
ecorc.
So It seemed a shamo that the Saints
should win over what was probably su
perior playing on tho part of their op
ponents, but there was no gottlng around
that homo run, and It proved tbo instir
mountablu obstacle In tho way of a tie or
n victory In the ninth Inning.
I' II 11 of lie iiinrluilitc I'Iiijk.
The game was not only clean; It abounded
In rcmnrkablo plays us well, Each side
mado two double plays, ono of which for
each team constituted tho chief features of
the game, for these two wero accomplished
In each instanuo by Just two players. Prob
ably tho most sensational of all was the
ono the visitors mado In the last halt ot tin
ninth Inning. It was Omaha's last inning,
and the scoro was only 1 to 0 in St, Paul's
favor. Everyone was sure that this could
be overcome, and tho boys went In to do
all that was expected. Letcher was thrown
out at first, but Calhoun made n henutlrul
two-bagger, the only ono of the game.
Then Held came to bat. Ho knocked the
hottest kind of a grounder down to third
base, and It looked like a hit. lint Drain
deceived the crowd by lapping up the ball
and putting It upon Calhoun, who was run
ning down from second. Then tho third
baseman cast the sphero across tho dia
mond In plenty of time to catch Held there,
nnd tho game was ended. '
Tbo other double play which took but two
men to accomplish, was perpetrated by
Gondlng and Stewart In the seventh. Ilynn
mado a bit and posted hlmsolt at first
base. Worden fouled out to Gondlng. Then
llraln repented this, putting up a high foul
which took the catcher clear back by the
grandstand. Oondlng ate It up, however
nnd then Ityati tried to mako second baso
on the catch out. Tho ball heat him there,
and Stewart did tho rest. Tho sldo was
out.
People Still Wonder.
People are still wondering how Omaha
lost that game, and they Intend to have
rovengo today, when Kddlo Gordon and tho
famous Iirletenstoln will hold down tho
box by turns. However, It Is unlikely that
tho collegian can do any hotter than Her
man did, for tho tall man made a fine rec
ord. So It would appear that If Mr. Drelt
vnstcln can keep tho Omaha hlta aa well
separated as did McGlll today tho Ilourke
men will havo to look to their laurels.
McGlll certainly deserves great praise, for
ho gave only one base on balls and managed
tho distribution of thoso seven hits so
effectively that they counted for naught
except h batting average.
Third Ilascman McAndrcws was the star
for tho locals. Ha was tho only man to
steal a base, and tho only man to sacrifice.
Then he mado a beautiful safe drlvo over
second base besides, nnd made a phenom
enal record of one In his position of six
clonn assists out of six chances. Two ot
(beso wcro almost Impossible. Score:
