Joseph Hartley, former stato treasurer, Is

cover tho amount of Hartley's defalcation,
which, with Intorest, nmounts to something
over $600,000. Tho present trial Is beforo n
Jury In Jtldgo Baxter's court, and Attorney
General I'rout Is representing tho stnto.
The case has been tried twice In tho
court of this district, ono verdict being for
tho stato nnd the other for tho defendants.
Ilnth verdicts were set asldo by the supreme
court on errors of tho trial court.
All city taxes which aro nofvald and re
ceipted for by July 1 will become deltmiuent
nnd will ho subject to a penalty of 1 per
cent a month.
City Treasurer A. II, Hennlngt will fol
low tho plan adopted last year and will re
quire that largo property owners submit
lists of property and checks by Juno 20.
This precaution Is takon that all receipts
may bo preparod before July 1.
Previous to 1900 lists were not filed In
tlmo to glvo the treasurer's clerks un op
portunity to preparo receipts beforo the
tlmo when tuxes became delinquent. Tho
result was that tho city lost tho Interest on
argo sums of money. Moro than $5,000
was lost In 1S99. Mr. Honnlngs nvolded this

will work day and night and every effort
