CONDITION OF THE IOWA CROP
Cool, Dry Wontlirr So So Kavnralile
for Crops Replanting; nt
Com.
United States Department of Agriculture,
Iowa Section, Climate and Crop Service,
Weather Bureau, for tho Week Ending
Juno 3, Dca Moines, la. The dally
average temperature of the Inst week was
nbout normal In the western half of tho
stato, and from 1 to 6 degrees below nor
mal In the eastern half. The nights wore
(mutually cool for the time of the year In
all sections and the days generally clear
with n prevalence of cool easUrly winds.
There were a few very light and widely
scattered showers, but much the larger por
tion of the state received no rainfall during
the week.
All reports Indicate adverse effects of
continued cool and dry weather. Late
planted ccrn needs tain nnd greater warmth
to quicken germination, and early planlel
corn needs warmer weather to stimulate
growth nnd give It better color. The dry
weathor has been favorable fcr cultivation
and the enrly planlel fields aro generally
clean and In good tilth. In the southern
districts considerable replanting l:ns been
necessitated on account of damage by
worms, which have been very destructive
lu tho extreme southeastern counties. The
oats crop has been more eerlously checked
In growth by the drouth than any other
cereal, but spring wheat and barley are
greatly In need of moisture. Pastures and
meadows are also showing some 111 effects
of continued dry weather so clossly follow
ing the saturated condition In early spring.
Copious showers, followed by seaionable
warmth, would greatly brlghfn the crop
outlook, Hardens and email fruit alao need
more moisture.

NEBRASKA CROP BULLETIN
8HEEP There was only a fair run of
sheep here today, and what was on sale
was of very common qunllty as a general
thing. Packers, however, took hold In
good shape and paid Just about steady
prices all around. There was one bunch of
pretty good clipped lambs that sold for
$4.75, and some fair lambs brought $4.40.
Spring lambs sold as high as $5.25, and
ewes reached $3.60. There were no good
wethers on sale today to test the market.
From tho way packers acted today It was
evident that good stuff was In active de
mand and would have sold readily at fully
steady prices.

United States Department of Agriculture,
Nebraska Section, Climate and Crop Servlco
of tho Weather nurcau, University of Ne
braska, Lincoln, June 4. Clear, dry week
with about normai temperature. The dally
mean temperature haf averaged about 1
degree above tho normal.
Tho rainfall has been below three-tbntbs
of an Inch In all parts of tho stato and
generally has been less than a tenth of an
Inch, whllo at most places none at all has
fallen.
The dry, clear weather hns been most
unfavorable for the growth of crops. Win
ter wheat Is heading short and generally
Is In less promising condition because ot
the continued dry weather. In some coun
ties the crop Is now considerably damaged.
Oats, grass and rye also need mln, except
In tho northwestern counties, where the
heavy rainfall ot last week placed all crops
And grass In good condition. Enrly planted
corn has grown slowly and late planted
corn Is coming up rather unevenly. The
cultivation of corn Is In progress. Fruit
was damaged but slightly by tho frosts ot
last week. O. A. I.OVELAND,

One of the Wonder Spots nf the "World
In the Mld-Pnclftc.
Laysan Island Is ono of the wonder spots
of tho world.
On this little lump of rock and land, poking
Its nose In mld-Pactflc, relates Pearson's
Magazine, so many thousands of birds
gather yenr by year to lay their eggs and
rear their young that ono can scarcely step
anywhere on tho narrow confines of tho
isle without treading on a bird, a bird's
nest or a bird's egg.
Laysan is the most favored bird home In
creation.
On tho map, Laysan, or Mollor Island,
will be found among n number ot imall
Isles, rocks and reefs that stretch away In
a northwesterly direction from tho Sand
wich group Nceker, French Frigate Shoals,
Gardner, Maro Reef and Llstnnsky.
Laysnn Is tbreo miles In length and two
and a half miles In breadth. It Is sprinkled
with vegetation In the form of strong, bushy
grnss and some low shrubs, between which
a few pigmy palms struggle for existence.
A long lagoon stretches across, filled with
remarkably salt water no fresh water ex
ists on tho Island, a curious fact, consider
ing tho number of land birds who make It
their nesting place.
And everywhere thero are birds thou
sands upon thousands of albatrosses, white
and brown. In great distinct colonies; great
rookeries of torns and petrols and frigate
birds; countless rail run everywhere In tho
long grass, bright red tropical honey birds,
bright yellow finches flutter In the shrubs;
curlows scream, ducks quack, crnke chirp
all tho day.
Bird lovers hearing of theso wonders, hnd
cast longing eyes on little mld-Paclfic Lay
san long before Hon. Walter Rothschild
most ardent ot naturalists sent his collec
tor, William Talmor, on a voyage of scien
tial exploration In these regions. The
fame of Laysan had spread abroad from
various Bourccs notnblty from an interest
ing general description given by the great
German ornithologist, Ilerr von Klttlltz,
who visited tho Island In 1S34. Rut It re
mained for Mr. Rothschild's emissary to
make a complete survey of Laysan's feath
ered world.
When rainier reached Laysan sailing
from Honolulu by way of Dlrd Island or
Nllhati, and visiting tho other rocky Islets
to Laysan'a north ho was astounded, be
wildered tho plaeo w3 alive with birds,
His foot sank In birds' burrows nt every
stop. Ho had been told that rail wero
"tolerably plentiful" wherever ho walked
theso llttlo creatures hurried out of his
way. Acres of albatrosses mot his gaie.
Where to begin tho work of cataloguing
was a bewildering problem.
At this time a Laysan Guano company
was managed by a Mr. Frcoth, who was
also governor of the Island. Mr. Frcoth had
built a tramline on his guano Held but
when ho took his visitor for a ride ho had
to send a man on before to clear the lino
ot tho young birds!
The albatrosses on Laysan are absolutely
fearless. They take not the slightest notice
of the raiders who come to despoil them of
their eggs and nil the other birds are as
tame as pet canaries, with tho exception ot
the curlews and ducksthese alone cannot
be caught in n hand-net.
Edward Huss, a well known business man
of Salisbury, Mo., writes: "I wish to say
for the benefit of others, that I was a suf
ferer from lumbago and kidney trouble and
all the remedies I took gave me no relief.
I was Induced to try Foloy's Kidney Cure,
and after tho use ot three bottles, I am
cured."

2 cents per hour and a twelve hour day

United Railway company. An element In
the meeting favored striking to enforce
