haulod flat on the wind, thrown about half
a dozen times, given a good broad reach
and finally sent homo before the wind witu
boom off to port, and at no time did It act
listless or show any lack of speed.
It was a bulldor'a trial and confined en
tirely to six or seven miles of deep water
below Bristol harbor, no attempt being
mado to show the yacht off to the Newport
colony, but morely to give the designer a
chance to Bee that it was all that he meant
It to be, and In every respect It equalled
his expectations.
The yacht has not been turned over to
the owners, as there Ib still some light work
to be done On some of tho rigging nnd In
side. It Is probnblo that It will formally
bo placed In commission at Newport late
in the week. A critical annlyRls of tho
boat Is that It Is well balanced nnd well
rigged, but Its sails need Improvement. As
to speed, it is too early to draw any con-
cluilon.

RYDE. Isle of Wight, May 21. The trial
ot Shamrock II and Shamrock I today was
In many respects the most puzzling that
has yet taken place. Instead of throwing
additional light on the abilities of tho
challenger, today's race makes It more
difficult than over to estimate Its speed.
On the stretch from Cowes lo SllklUer
they had an Interesting struggle undr full
racing canvass, with the skippers at the
helm. Officially racing has not commence 1,
but the skippers were apparently having a
trial between themselves and snatching
every advantage. Shamrock II was a
good half mile to tho leeward when they
started, but, In the five miles between the
anchorage nnd the SUklket It closed up
the whole of this big gap. After threaten
ing to go through the weather Sham
rock II had to be thrown In the wind nnd
held all back, while Captain Wrlnge sailed
Shamrock I boldly across his bows In
tho wrong tack. The keenness of the1 con
test was shown by the fact that Captain
Wrlngo tried this bluff, for had Captain
8ycamoro hold on there would probably
have been a disastrous collision.

course the new yacht did equally well,
opening out on every board and theu sud
denly falling o:t, Instead of gaining. Tho
new yacht lost on every tack. The explana
tion given by those on board is that tho
hobstay weakened and spilled the beadsalls
and foresails, but It is strange 11 an Im
perceptible difference tn the trim of Its
sails made go much difference In Its sailing.
However, the old boat turned the weather
mark nearly trree minutes and went off
aown tne wmn at. a great, pace, men
came another surprise, for the challenger,
which had never before been able to run It,
closed up all the time, and when they
finished at Nab lightship the times were:
Shamrock I, two hours, six minutes and
twelve teconds. Shamrock II, two hours,
eleven minutes and nlnoteen seconds.
The opinion of most of the experts who
witnessed tho rnco was that had it been
deolred that Shamrock II shouW win It
could easily have dono so.
