CHICAGO, May 21. The wheat market
ruled strong nnd fairly active, regardless
of lower quotations from Liverpool, The

account, and added to the situation wan
the Bonrd of Trade's declaration that the
Pcavcy elevator was Irregular. July wheal

Hcports of a demand for export wheat,
light local receipts and bail weather condi
tions In the scuthwest and northwest morn
than counteracted disappointing cables at
tho opening. The inltl.il price for May
wheat was Itff'ie higher at ;2Vrf'2Tc, and
within the tlrst hour an advance to T.IHc
v as registered. A firm totin prevailed from
the start. OffcrltiKS were light, with fair
buying by scattering commission houses,
Reports became, current that several Wall
street operators were In tlm wheat market,
and these, In conjunction with developments
In the Penvcy elevator case, through which
it was rumored that a largo iiuantlty or
wheat would hit taken out of the contract
market, urged tho shorts to renewed netlv
Ity and a further advance of lie was made.
On liquidation a reaction to la'.Ml '.Tic fol
lowed after which the market rallied to
73?iifr7.'V4C. The close was steady and f;ic
higher at 73bC. Ten loads wero reported
for export. Henboard clearances of wheat
and flour were equal to B76,(KH bu. Brad

apolis and Duluth reported 7b cars, against
12S Inst week and 328 a year ago, l.oenl re

Corn was affected hs far as the May de
livery was concerned by the declaring of
the pcavcy elovatnr n Irregular and con

of contract corn It contained, May corn
opened unchanged at 4Sc, sold up to fMac
and under profit-taking reacted, closing

enjoyed an advance, opening unchanged to

Tho trade was active. Weather conditions,
which were reorted aa unfavorable, ex

of the day tinder liquidation July reacted
to 452 and closed steady nnd Uc higher at
4t',4i0. l.ocal receipts were 942 cars, 331 of
contract grade.
Outs wero strong through the greater part
of tho day, weakening somo toward tho
close In realizing by local shorts. July oats
opened a shado lower at 28?ic. Strength
Immediately berame manifest on good com
mission house buying nnd tho appearance
of numerous outsldo orders. Crop reports,
too, continued to be a bullish factor. The
price rose to 291i'&29c, when by reason of
liquidation a slight decrease was made.

400,000 bu. and tho market fell to 287sff29c.

CATTLE Tnern was n cooil. llheral run
of cattle 011 sale this morning, which gave
buyers an opportunity to tane their time,
and as a result thu market was not par
ticularly active, xne cattle, however, began
to chnnge hands In good season, and it
wns not long befom the blit end of tho
desirable grades was sold.
tncro wero about 100 cars of beef steers
Included In tho receipts, and there were
several bunchs of choice cuttle. Uuycrs,
of course, tried to get their supplies n
little lower, but In most cases they paid
right around steady prices. In some In
stances thu market looked a little weak
and sales were made thai were a shade
lower, but to offset that .some of the best
bunchas sold fully ns high as they would
have brought yesterday or at the close of
last week. Taking thu market as a whole
there was not much change, and It would
averngu up right close to steady.
Cow stuff was In light supply today In
proportion to the total receipts, and prices
in most cases were about steady. Good
stun sold readily ut stcudy prices, and If
there was any chnnge at all it was a little
weaker feeling on tho medium grades, but
there was hardly enough change to be
worthy of mention.
Bulls also sold In Just about yesterday's
notches nnd1 the game, is true of veni calves
and stags.
The light receipts of stockers and feed
ers continued today and ns speculators wero
looking for tresh supplies tho tew bunches
offered brought good strong prices where
the quality was satisfactory. Representa

HOOS-Today's hog market opened a big
nickel, or frSTVie, lower and the trade was
active nt the decline. The receipts wero
the heaviest of tho yenr, but still tho de
mand was equal to the occasion and prac
tically everything was sold early In the
morning. The bulk of the hogs sold from
$5.65 to j.'..i'ii, with some of tho better grades
at $5.7214 nnd from that up to $5.77H. It
took a choice load of hos, however, to
sell over t6.6"14. Tho lighter weights went
from 15.65 down, and, as usual, were neg
lected and In most cases were left until
tho last cnl or ttm market. There was not
much chanru i" the market from start to
finish, as good hogs on the close sold for
.is much as they did at ntiy time during
the day. Representative sales:
