NKW YORK. April ll.-Speculatlve liqui
dation was very clearly at work again In
today's stock mnrket It wns offset during
tho enrly part of tho day by the nggrcsslve
strength shown by a handful of stocks. The
advance In these wns helped by violent
manipulation, but It served to sustain the
rest of tho market In faco of heavy selling
until tho call money rate ran up again,
when the pressure to sell beramo greater
than the absorption power and the market
turned , weak. Even the notably strong
stocks lost all of their gains us n rule and
the mnrket closed dull and nt about the
lowest, and nt a considerable net loss, ex
cept In a very few slocks. ,
The nrrlvnl In London of the New ork
financier who has been the moving spirit
In most of the recent vast llnanclnl projects
In this country aroused some expectation
that the tendon mnrket would reflect his
presence there, nnd that action would bo
tnken In some of the projects which hnvo
been supposed to be waiting upon his
counsel. The rumored Burlington deal was
tlm most Important of these and the fail
ure of official continuation of the very
posltlvn assertions which have been current
that this transaction wns completed had
a great deal to do with the depression
which permeated th" whole market as the
day progressed. It Is ivldent from the per
sistent disclaimers of the deal that an Im
portant minority of the stockholders Is still
opposed to It, oven If It bo true that actual
control has passed to the. Hill-Morgan In
terests. Tho wldcsprend belief In Impending con
solidations of Importance In the copper
world made Amalgamated Copper very ac
tive nnd buoyant; but here again the fail
ure of expected official conllrmntlou nroused
some feeling of distrust among the specu
lators, who hnd bought most largely and
with least Information, and the prollt
taklng cost the stock practically all of Its
3i points rise The Chicago & Northwest
ern stocks continued their remarkable rise,
the common advancing 13 points anil the
preferred 11 points, each of them showing
5 points advance between sales. Denials
from ofllcinl sources of the rumored con
solidation of this road with tho Chicago,
St. Paul. Minneapolis Omaha nnd with
the I'nlon Pacific caused a reaction in the
stock of 71ii points. Thrc wero denials
of the rumored pairs of Consolidated (las'
real estate, cuuslng a reaction of 1 points
from the stock's 54 points rise. The ad
vance of 3'i In Rock Island on rumors of
buying for control by the Pennsylvania was
more than lost.
Sugar roso an extreme 3'i nnd saved more
of Its gain than other stocks. The I'nlted
States Steel stocks showed 11 notnble rc
lapso from their early strength, closing at
net declines of a fraction to a point. The
selling pressure wns most marked In Bur
lington and In Northern Pnclllc nnd it was
only for n brief period that they were lifted
nt all over last night. The reaction In
Burlington renched 5'i nnd In Northern
Pnclllc 2 point. The requirements of
the subtreiisury and the demand from the
Interior continued to make Inroads on bank
ing reserves, and the refusal by the secrc-
tnry ot the treasury or nomis ottered to
him nt the market price discouraged (he
hope of relief from that source. Tho hard
ening of the money rate In Loudon also
causes apprehension of a renewal of pres
siiro for gold from that point, although
1110 Higher money rate nere was sumcieui

the Hank or l';nginnil shows mat it lias
made heavy demands upon the open mar
ket there gives promlso thut tho outside
market must resort to the bank again,
which would make an ndvunce In the bank
rato effective In Influencing the private
discount rnte as well as the exchanges.

NEW YORK. April U.-COTTON-Cotton
In tho New York mnrket touched the high
point of yesterday again today on a
momentary scurry of shorts for cover, but,
taken ns a whole, tho market showed moro
strength than In several days. Periods of
apathy Inevltnbly meant sagging prices and
a faint show of bear aggression und much
of the time tho bull forces wore obliged to
support tho market to prevent a serious
break. At one tlmo May dropped from 8.10o
to 7.97c under n wave of liquidation. Senti
ment In conservative, circles was disposed
to regard talk of materially higher prices
In tho near future owing to tho fact that
tho short Interest hns been greatly reduced
by tho lato advances. The opening was
steady, with prices 1 point lower to 2 higher.
Soon after tho call shorts becamo restless
and bought summer months In large
nmounts, This demand, with fair bull
trading and some Europenn buying, caused
a rise tn 8.10c for May nnd a corresponding
Improvement In the rest of tho list. Liver
pool after opening about steady took a
leaning tuwnrd the bull side nnd this
strengthened tho market here. Tho close
of tho Arst hour marked the turning point
In the ndvance, ns selling orders came In
from tho south nnd the alarm of shorts sub
sided. By noon n loss of several points
wns apparent. Further largo receipts
south, dormant spot markets and fairly
good weather wore In part responsible for
the loss, though n severe break In Liver
poo! was reully the dominating Influence.
The sudden renctlon abroad was attributed
to tho failure, of n prominent Alexandria
cotton house. During the afternoon tho
local mnrket was very quiet and aside from
a slight rnlly soon nfler the noon hour fol
lowed a narrow rut. Tho close was quiet, 2

CATTLE There wns n very light run of
cattle hero for this tlmo of tho week nnd
ns the demnnd on the part of puckers vns
In good shape tho market ruled active and
stronger nil around on nil deslrnblo grades.
Receipts included about 40 cars of beef
steers and tho quality was fairly good.
Packers were all after the better grades
und It wns not long beforo everything was
out of flrst hands. Tho market could best
be described by calling it active nnd
stronger, although Mima sales were mado
that we'o undoubtedly higher. Even the
less dcslrablo bunches and half fat stuff
sold without difficulty at fully steady
prices.
There wero only about 15 cars of cows on
sale today and ns packers all wanted a few
thev started out and paid strong to a dime
higher prices thnn were offered yesterdny.
The greatest advance was, of course, on tho
better grades as that class of cattlo was
what packers were looking for.
Bulls." calves nnd stngs did not show
much of nny change todny, although prices
wore fully us good ns as they were yester
day. The supply ot feeders was very light to
day and the few cholco bunches offered
wero picked up nt good, steady prices, Tho
commoner grndes, however, and cattle on
the northern order are. very hard to move
us the demand for them Is exceptionally
light. Tho iinileslrnfclo cnttle, It anything,
are lower than they were a week ago.
