NEW YORK, April O.-An astonishing
mutation of speculative sentiment was
demonstrated by the uctlon of the stock
market today. There was not n sign of
the distress nnd aeule anxiety under which
the market labored all day. It Is the al
most Invariable rule that such a violent
break In prices us that of yesterday brings
nn overnight accumulation of selling or
ders from alarmed holders or stock who
waited for dally reports for their Inrorma
tlon on the stock market, but the open
ing this morning was quiet ami unriittled,
with no Important pressure to sell and with
many notable advances und by the demand
to cover.
when the tlav was over the nun leauers
had recovernd ibrdr full control of the situ
ation and wero marking up prices und at
tracting large following with all the facility
which has characterized all their operations
ror manv wi-ekn mist. There was very
palpable manipulation and there were care-
iuny organizeti operations 10 suppun inu
market, Commission houses which wero
prominent In bidding up stocks und which
hnve noted for large speculative Interests
nil through the bull campaign, were freo
fenders or money neiow mo rate or 1110
banks at the same time that were buying
stocks. The Htirllugton deal was rehabili
tated and had nppurentiy not lost nny ot
Its nrlstlne force, although olllclal eon-
llrmution was consplculotisly absent. There
wns revived credulity In many other
rumors which have already done good serv
ice. Including that of the sumitiseil read
justment of General ICIectrlc's capital und
the Southwestern railroad merger. The
settlement of the International Smelting,
the advance in the pr cc or rellned sugars
ant! the absenco of engagements for Sugar
were used with effect by the buns.
Advances reached li points In HurllnKton.
Rock Island nnd Northwestern. 3Va In Great
Northern ami Northern Pacllie, 4 In Chi
cago ,v Eastern Illinois, 3 In Metropolitan,
In Western Union. Consolidated Oas 3.
Amalgamated Copper 4. Sugar 2i, United
States Express BV4, Rubber 4'4, Rubber pre
ferred 8'i and the malorltv of the nrlnclnal
nctlve slocks 1 to 2 points. Only In ono or
iwo cases weru me gams maintnineti,
reactions running from 1 to 2, but the
market was vigorously sunnorted ngaln
and the close was Irregular. The pressure
of profit-taking was not notably heavy,
even at the advances. Apparently the
speculative holders of stocks were de
termined lo hold for a rurther rise unless
they weru forced Into liquidation or unless
thorn was n enlllmr In of loans or call for
margins. Thero was much less calling of
loans today than yesterday and this called
attention to several causes for special
pressure In yesterday s money market.
Today's clearing house statement dis
closed the enormous totul of exchanges of
J437.832.HSO, which Is over JI2.000,00O In excess
of the largest previous day's record In the
history of tho clenrlng house. The general
activity of tho stock market yesterday had
something to do with this, but the settle
ment growing out of the clearances In the
contracts to deliver the United States
Steel stocks, when Issued, was a special
factor. This involved the adjustment of
transactions In over SiiO.ooO shares. The
preparation of the certlllcates of the United
States Steel stocks made possible actual
oeuveries, so mat operators wnom me
clearings showed to bo long stock found
themselves eniled unon yesterday ror a
settlement. The easier money In London
today lessened the demand for exchange
and thn rate for sterling yielded a fraction.
tho sub-treusur.v was a debtor at the
clearing house today to the amount of
$1,509,537 on account of tho payment by tho
I'ostoiuco department to railroads tor mo
transportation of malls. "Yesterday's heavy
liquidation ylso caused some natural relief
to tho money market. Thero was not lack
ing a suspicion that yesterday's violent
relup'u was winked nt If not connived ut
by sold-out bull leaders either to enable
mem to get 111 nl lower prices or to shake
out u weak following and relievo tho con
dition of overspeculatlon.
Tho bond market was moderately active
and lower. Total sales, par value, J3.905,

American department, which was moder

cautiously, people having been scared by
tho relapso In New York yesterday, but
It soon was realized that the drop was In

CATTLE There wns u liberal run of
cattle here today, but h demand on tho
part ot all the packers was In good shape,
and as a result tho market ruled active
nnd steady to strong all around on any
thing nt nil ileKlrnble.
The bull: of tho receipts today were inado
up or hcer steers, nnoui Hcventy-iivo cars
being on sale. The quality of the offerings
as a whole was better than for some tlmo
pnst, and as high as Jo.45 was paid. PacK
ers started out early and bid good, steady
to stroncr nrlces for all tho desirable grades.
and as a result the cattle changed bunds nt
11 rapid rate. Even tho warmed-up ciiiuo
sold to tho packers today In the. majority
of cases, ns they bid higher than tho specu
lators. Although some sales were miido
today that looked higher than yesterday's
prices, taking quality Into consideration,
the market could best be described by call
ing It simply a strong, nctlve market.
The supply of butcher stock was small
today In proportion to the total receipts,
nnd for that reason competition wns active
on nil deslrublo bunches, lllds wero gen
erally steady with yesterday, and In some
eases stronger. It was a good, active mar
ket, und everything wns out of llrst bunds
In good season.
Bulls, calves nnd stugs also sold In good
shape today, prices being fully aa good ns
they were yesterday.
There wns not much cliunge today In tho
situation In stock cattle. In some cases
the market looked a llttlo stronger, hut
ns a rule It could not be quoted nny higher
than yesterday. The trade, however, had
moro llro to it today than it did yesterday
and anything at all desirable met with
ready sale. Tho common cattle were hard
to move, the same as has been the caso all
along. Representative sales:
