authorities and removed to the emergency
hospital.
CHtcrhelter Is an eccentric old shoemaker
who has his workshop nnd residence In a
narrow hallway nt HIS South Tenth street.
Ho lived alone and was seldom vlcltcd by
anybody but patrons. Two wcoks ago the
old man wus taken sick. Ho would not
penult his neighbors to come Into his shop
ami cared for himself.
Mrs, Mattlo lloxcn, a daughter of Offter-
helter, heard of her father's sickness, nnd
went to- see him. Tho old man would not
allow her to enter tho shop. Ho told her
that he had the smallpox. Sho reported
tho case to the health authorities, who made
an Investigation 'nn)l foiiud that the Hum's
statements wero'true.

attracted a large crowd of neighbors to the
shoemaker's door and tbo health authori

Investigation proved that the man's name
Is Frauk Alvy. Ho lives at 620 South Tenth
street nnd has exposed tho entire neigh
borhood to the disease.
When usked what was wrong with him,
he replied, "Chlckcnpox. What did you
think I had?"
Tho doctors assured him Hint ho was re
covering from a sovcro attack ot smallpox
and ordered him nnd all other persons who
live In tho tamo house quarantined.
Alvy has had the dlseaso for several
weeks. During hie sickness halt a dozen
persons havo lived lu tho bouso with him.
Ho did not havo medical attention and for
several days hag been In different parts ot
tho city. Tho man's faco Is badly pitted
and the doctors say there Is no question
but that ho had a case ot genuine
smallpox.
