I.nrno Absorption of Itnllrond Stoelis
Wlilt I'luet out lonn In Spoelnllles,
NJJW YORK, March fi.-The character of
today's Mock market was very similar lo
that of yesterday. Absorption of rnllroad
stocks of a high grade by buyers of abun
dant resources and of n substantial kind
went on side by side, with wide fluctuations
In some of the highly speculative special
ties. So far ns the railroad department was
concerned activity wns shifted to some ex
tent from those stocks which were most
prominent yesterday, A notable feature of
tho market was that It did not really re
spond with unanimity at any time to tho
strength shown by individual stocks. Also
In those stocks which did ndvnnce tho
strength wns not simultaneous. Apparently
the demand for one stock would bo largely
sutlslled before buying wn taken up In an
other. During the latter part of the day there
was nbundnut evidence of largo pioflttak
Ing. Stocks which had been strong early
In the day fell back matorlnllv and many
usually prominent stocks which were
notably active today were allowed to full
back below last night's leveh Neverthe
less the day's gains are very striking, both
by reason of the character of the stocks and
the amount .of transactions and extent of
gains In them. Ycsterdny's movement !n
Hurllngton was continued nt the outset
this morning nnd tho stock was carried up
2 to 13014. a record price. The strength of
the stock was due to the fact that large

Cotton .Market.
NKW YORK. March 6 COTTON Vnbllo
Interest In cotton was conspicuous by Its
absence today and scarcely nny attempt
wai made lo bring about a rally from tho
Into lie decline, notwithstanding the fact
that the crop movement for the dny fell
short of expectations and that early Kngllsh
market news rellected n change for tho bet
ter In sentiment abroad. On llrst sales
prices worked up from 2 to 8 points, with
mo mnrKet snowing rair stability. Cover
ing by pit shorts us a matter of precaution
led to a further rlso of 35(4 points, follow
ing the call, but Investment support was
not tempted by tho bullish news above
mentioned and tho public In general ap
peared to have given cotton up for.the
tlmo being. Liverpool turned a sham cor
ner on finding tho trade here nnnosed to
an ndvnnco and furnished numerous selling
nroors m representatives in tno pil. Tim
south nnd west, which had bought small
lines of Mny and July nn tho Initial ad
vance, turned sellers nnd not only unloaded
entire holdings, but became aggressively
bearish ns well. Trading wns light most of
tho session. Noon found prices down 5ft 5
points from last night's closing. Then estl-
mates ror llglit New llrlenns and Houston
receipts tomorrow Rave the market a slight
stiffening, but stll later there was n re
newal of selling for both nccntints nnd a
sag in prices to the noon level. The offi
cial reports rrom sniitiiern spot mnrkets
indicated no real strength there. In the
last half hour tho local mnrket wim feverish
and weak under foreign selling nnd pres

CATTLK There was a light run of cattle
here today for tho middle of the week, and,
ns buyers were all anxious for supplies, tho
market ruled nctlve und stronger all around
on good stuff.
Tbe better grades of beef steers were
picked up early In the morning nt strong
prices as comtmred with yesterday. Owing
to, the Kght supply it did not take long 'or
iiie t-utiiu uunweriug 10 inai oescripiiun in
cnange nanus. Tim less dcstrnble btincn.es.
whllo not quite as ready sellers, brought
good strong prices owing to the fnct that
packers had to have cattle and there were
not enough good kinds to go around.
The cow market wns also In good shnpe
and sellers experienced llttlo difficulty In
selling out nt very satisfactory prices. So
far ns the prices ncttially paid are con
cerned there wns not much change notice
nble rrom yesterday, but the reeling was
good and strong nnd everything wns out of
first n a nn h in good season.
Hulls, calves nnd stags sold readily today
nt fully steady prices.
Thero wero so few feeders on sale today
that It was difficult to tell much about the
market. The good kinds were bought up
early In the morning nt good tlrm prices nnd
tho less desirable bunches brought steady
prices, so that the situation could best bo
described by calling It a good steady mnrket
all around. That would apply to she stuff
and to t'tork bulls and calves ns well as to
steers. Representative sales:
