FEBRUARY RECORD IS ENORMOUS
Cloning- Three I)nn of .Month SIhmv
AKKrrKnto .tnlcB of Ncnrly If.'tuu,

' Surplus dish.
Tho prosperous condition existing among
tbc farmers of Pottawattamie county is
evidenced by the real estate transfers tiled
In tho ollko of the county recorder during
tho Inst month. The number of transfers
has been unusually large, and this Is partic
ularly truo of tho last few days. The
transfers In every Instonco represent a
bona Ada sale and Indlcato that money la
plentiful In Council 1) luffs and Pottawat
tamlo county.
Tho transfers filed with the county re
corder during tho last thrco days repre
sent sates Involving $281,843.59. Nlnoty per
cent of tho transfers nro farming land.
Last Thursday tho deeds tiled represented
transactions Involving $83,222, while those
on Friday aggregated $57,622.71. Yesterday
was an unusually heavy day In the county
recorder's olllce, no less than thirty-seven
transfers being recorded, representing
transactions Involving $138,998.8S.
This extraordinary activity In tho real
estate market Is attributed to tho pros
perous times that tho farmers of this county
nro enjoying. Tho banks are loaded down
with surplus cash and willing to loan It at
a lower rato of Interest than, has pre
vailed In this part or tho stato for many
years. A few years back It was nothing
for a bank to chnrgo 8 and even 10 per
cent on land loans. Then the rate of In
terest dropped to 7 and later to C per cent.
Ibis has all been changed by the present
era of prosperity and tho, banks aro willing
to loan their money oh good farm se
curities at per cent, and ono largo loan
was recorded last week In which tho In
terest was only 4 per cent.
This low rato of Interest has Induced
many farmers, who heretofore have rented,
to buy land. They have found It cheaper
to borrow money from the banks at C per
cent with which to purchase land than
to pay $3 and $t rent nn acre. Pottawatta
mlo land Is considered a good Investment
and during the last few years has almost
doubled In value.

I ii lie (ho Vnrloun Amount.
At tho meeting of the Hoard of County
Supervisors yesterday morning County Au
ditor Innes submitted, a statement showing
what each supervisor had spent of tho road
fund In his district during tho last year
and tho amount ot the road tax collected.
This statement was requested by the board
In answer to tho charge modo by Supervisor
Hansen that the members of tho board had
failed to comply with tho law and report
to tho auditor the expenditures on road
work In their respective districts. The
auditor's statement gives tho following fig
ures: Supervisor Auld's District Amount of
road fund expended, $1,785.18; tax collected,
$1,6)3.34.
Supervisor Hrondes' District Amount ex
pended, $1,603.03; tax collected, $1,839.83.
Supervisor Hansen's District Amouat ex
pended, $2,260.17: tox collected, $1,877.49.
Supervisor Kerncy'a District Amount ex
pended, $1,673.02; tax collected, $1,658.49.
Supervisor Matthows' District Amount
expended, $4,300.54; tax collected, $4,784.14.
Council Dluffs Is included In this district
nnd $2,050 of tho nmount expended out ot
tho road fund was turned over to tho mu
nicipal authorities.
Tho county auditor's statement shows that
Supervisors Auld nnd Hansen expended a
larger proportion of tho road fund than
was collected In their respective districts.
Tho total nmount expended ot tho road
fund was $11,622.84, whllo tho tax collected
was $11,803.29.
From tho discussion that ensued after the
rending of tho auditor's statement It Is ex
pected that Supervisor Hansen's published
charges ngalnst the members of tho board
will have the effect of Inducing them to
conform strictly with tho requirements of
tho law and furnish detnlled reports to the
auditor of every dollar expended of the
road fund In their several districts this
year.
This was tho only business transacted nt
the session and the board adjourned until
April.
