THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: PVDAT, MAKCII fl. 1001. 21 CONDITION OF Oil AH A'S TRADE Gitj Orowded with Buyer All Anxloui to Place Liberal Orderi. MARKETS FOR WEEK RATHER FEATURELESS Volnnic of HiislncftM fur Frbriinry Coni- pnrrn Fnvornlity with Thnl of Cnr responding Month of Any Yrnr Over Experienced, The principal feature of the wholesale trade of this city for last week was the large number of buyers on the market. At no time, when there was no special In ducement to bring In merchants, has there been ns many buyers on the market as ar rived Inst week. The house, salesmen for the different firms were rushed from early Monday morning until late Saturday after noon to wait upon the customers' that wero looking for spring goods. Several of the houses had a number of their traveling men In to help handle the rush of busi ness. It Is also noticeable that a good pro portion of tho arrivals were merchants who have not been accustomed to buying their supplies In this city. They were on their way cast nnd simply stopped off hero to Inspect the stocks offered and In every In stance they decided that they could do no better by going farther cast and as u result they bought their supplies here. Huch things as that are of course very encourag ing to local Jobbers and they aro now In tho best of spirits and full of hopo for tho fu ture. Traveling men nre also meeting with good success on the road and nro sending In un Immense number of orders. They nlco say that the stream of merchants headed toward Omaha has only Just started and that from this time on Omaha linns will do the largest house business they have ever experienced. Taking tho month of February as 11 wholn It Is found that, an compared with last year, local Jobbers hnvo dono more business this year and In fuel more mini over nctoro miring tlie mnnm of February. An regards tho market rhauges there Is not much to bo said, as there have been very fow fluctuations since last report. The feeling Is tlrm on nenrly all lines, however, nnd all predictions nro to the effect that strong prices will rule for some time to come. Manufacturers have all tho busl ticss they can handle nnd consequently thuy will not bo Inclined to cut prices. Collections arc in fair condition. They could bo better and they might bo a whole lot worse. There Is not much worrying be ing done on that score, however, us there is no doubt but what merchants will come out all rlgnt in tho end, although they may bo u nine Eiow in mailing remittances, Coffee Takes n Jump, The only Important chnnc-e In the ernperv market sinco lost report Is the rather unex pected advance in the price of both roasted nnd green coffees, Iloth of them nro now quoted 140 higher than they were a week ago. According to report' from eastern markets there Is more activity In coffee circles than has been seen for rfomo tlmo past and particularly In tho way of specu lation. In view of present conditions a still inrmcr ouvancc would cause no great aur prise. .The sugar market remains In practically the samo position It wns a week ngo. There Is also no change to report In either canned goods or dried fruits, prices remaining the mi lilt-. There have been no fluctuation! NEW YORK, .March 2.- Dealings wero rather unimportant In the stock market tO' day, neither tho volume of transactions nor the rnnge of prices offering nny strlk' lng fentures. The bank statement bore out tho Index of tho money market during the last week, rather than the Indicated ensh changes. No Intelligible explanation can bo offered of the fact that the known movements of money showed n loss ot over $2,000,000 for the week, while the bank state mrtil dlnclnneil nn nctjal Increase In cash reserves of over $1,000,000. The system of reckoning tho various nems uy me iiany averuges Is usually accepted for explana tion nf nil such vaitarlrs. The moderate loan expansion can hardly be attributed to nny of the gront flnnnclnl transactions whose effects havo been most feared, es. peclnlly tho merger, as mere was some selling of stocks by traders yesterday on tho supposition that a decline In surplus reserves would bo reported, tho publica tion of the statement brought a demand from this sourco to cover short contracts. Prices ran off again In some cases, nnd tho closing wns Irregular In tone, ns tho trading had been throughout tho short ses sion. Not changes nro mixed. Tho day's markets seemed to corroborate the view that trading has been relegated to tho hands of board room traders. The rteel stocks were generally higher on small transactions, Tin Plate preferred showing tho largest advance, Willi n tlso of 2Vi. The Steel nnd Wire stocltn were exceptions nnd nre slightly lower. The bituminous coal carriers continued In somo demnnd, tho IlnUlmorc & Ohio slock being marked up 2i nnd 2'4, respectively, for common ond preferred. Sugar was Inclined to be henvy. but recovered tho worst of the loss. There were gains In the less Important stocks hero nnd thero, with strength In some of thu individual railroad clocks on reports of good .earning!!. There waa n good demand for railroad bonds, especially of tho Southern Paclao Issues, nnd some of tho southwestern re!, roads nnd thoso affected by recent consoll datlons or change of control. t'nlted Htntes 2s. registered, advanced K, L'nltJd States 2s, coupon, , anil the 2s, new 4s nnd 5s 't per cent over tlu closing coll of last wecK, Tho tollowlng nte the closing prices on the Now York atocic exchange: tchlson "VH & O.. 0t B5',Wnbah S7U do ofd,. no pru Wheel. & I..
