CHICAGO, Feb. 26.-ln today's pcctilntlvc
placo on tho leading Hoard of Trade mar
kets conditions wcro not materially
changed, nlthough tho tendency was toward
caster prices. Wheat closed 11 uliailc, corn
fcc. otvtM So and provisions 7V4G12',c lower.
Wheat wad IrrcKUlnr with regard to
prices. Traders evinced a disposition to
await something distinctly Indlcatlvo of a
chntiKo In crop condition lieforo assuming
their stand. Outsldo business was conspic
uous by its absence, and to this was due the
declines which followed every advance.
Lours merely waited for them to unload
scattered lines. May opened HHUc lower to
unchanged at "nc to 76UT7fiSc. Inllucnced
comowhnt by a report that the Kansas
wheat 11 credit') would bo 7 per cent larKer
than last year, with tho plant In excellent
condition, Unlit northwest receipts nnd a
short-lived commission house demand sent
nervoiiH shorts to cover and .May rallied to
70ft7trc, That somo of this covering was
dun to tho expectation of a heavy world's
vlnlblo (lcereaso was shown by the slack
rcsponso tho market mado when the figures
wcro given out. This bulge tempted rea'l?.
Ing sales, nnd as tho trade was keeping an
cyo on tho declining com market May fell
off to "t!kc. At this a lending operator ab
sorbed "lo.noo bushels, bidding the market
hack to "tiijc In so dolus. It was during
this advanro that tho visible statement was
made, but tho failure of the crowd to follow
tho new leader showed how well they hail
calculated earlier. Moro long wheat whs
for nalo on this advance nnd May again de
clined, closing a shade down at 76',e. Aside
from tho business transacted tho llrst half
hour the Inula was restricted to local con
fined. Tho world's visible supply, according
to Hrudslrcot's, decreased $,tX,tm bushels
during tho PiHt week. Kxporters reported
12 loads taken. Heiiboard clearances In
wheat and Hour reached 11 total of 2fi.1,iiX
bushels, Primary receipts aggregated 4l5.ri
bushels, compared wltii fBO.WQ bushels the
corresponding day last year. Minneapolis
and Dtllilth reported 210 cars, against .'Hi
last week and b02 a year ngo. l,ocul re
celpls were !' cars, none of which wero
graded contract.
Moderatn activity characterized the corn
market during tho tlrst hour, but there
after tho market for this cereal ruled dull
nnd llvo wheat was bounded by tho pit. At
the start commission houses traded liberally
on both sides of tho fence, with the ncalplng
element working hit-and-miss at whichever
sldo seemed to offer a profit. Lending
operators wero anything but active, but
enough long stuff from scattered sources
enmo out to glvo tho market a declining
tendency nil day. Kvon with tho market
under -tin offerings wero liberal for somo
time, but ut W-o tho support was better
and tho close, though easy, showed somo of
tho loss regarding country offerings nnd
were moro liberal, though not large, (.'ash
trado was slow. May sold between ll'fcll
414 and 40?;n and closed s!ower at 42c. Re
ceipts wero ta cars. .12 of contract grade.
There wtm a fairly good trado In oats
within a narrow rnngo of prices. May sold
between 23o nnd 25HO and closed He lower
nt 2.".H1t2o?4C, tho corn market being an In
fluence throughout. At 234c commission
houses had numerous orders, but offering!!
were light. Receipts wero Its cars.
Provisions wero dull and weaker. The
opening was steady on light offerings and
n strong market at tho stock yards. The
rash demand continued among tho bullish
Items, and somo of the earlv buying was
said to bo for export, lint selling by packers
overcame bullish Inllueneo and the close
was easy. May pork sold between $14.1',;,
and "14.07 and closed 124o lower nt JH.Oi'A:
Jliiy !ard between S7.ASfi7.57H and S7.W) and
closed "Ho. down at S7.l7H7.nO: May ribs Ik-.
tween S7.1S and S7.07H. with the closo 7Hc de
pressed at S7.07H.
Kstlmated receipts tomorrow: Wheat. 0

MOVICMn.TH IX STOCKS AMI BONDS.
I.nrnc ProiMirtlon of IlenlliiKN In
Stocks Is ('entered III Sterl.
NEW YORK, Feb. 26. A large proportion
of tho dealings In tho stock market again
centered In tho steel stocks,
The ofllclnl statement Issued by the bnnk
Ing house having tho negotiations for con
solidation In charge, giving tho terms of ex
change for the securities of the present
companies Into those of tho new company,
dashed all the speculative enthusiasm over
the steel stocks. The effect was tho moro
remarkable In thnt the terms ofllcinlly nn
nounccd were found In several cases to
closely conform to those conjectural figures
which havo beyn current for several days
past.
With tho exception of nil upward dash In
one or two of the steel stocks Just ut the
opening there wus nn strength manifest lu
tho group during tho day. It was 11 few
minutes after tho opening, In fact before
tho ofllclnl statement was given out, 'I he
contrast between tho volatile effervescence
and tho speculative spirit yesterday, and
In tho tlrst few minutes of trading today,
with tho sober quietude of the trading
bnsed on calculations with pencil and paper
after the actual stnte of affairs became
known wns a glowing commentary on 'he
fascination of the unknown for the specula
tive temiiernment. This llrst fact to 11 1
tract tho attention of the speculators that
the price level of the existing stocks did not
consist with tho relative benefits they wero
to receive from tho exchange. This led to
a spurt of arbitrage dealings to adjust the
price level on a consistent basis. Amerlcnn
Hoop benefited by the operation, while
Steel nnd Wire wns a sufferer. But It was
evident that tho Insiders who have had time
for mnture cnlcu'nttnn had done their buy
ing, while the outsiders were not Inclined to
Jump to conclusions In so vast a problem.
As all of the stocks get from par to 125 per
cent of tho new securities In the exchange,
with additional lieueflts In somo cases. It Is
clear that on a basis of equal value for tho
properties concerned lu the consolidation
the highest-priced is National Tube, which
sold last night at 106, while tha lowest Is
American Hoop, which sold Inst night nt
S3H.
Of the common stocks tho highest Is Tin
pinto, which so'd last night at 69, and the
lowest Is American Hoop, which sold ut 35,
There wns much calculation over the prices
of tho new securities, but so far as known
there wero no denllnss "when Issued."
There were a. few railroad stocks which
were notably strong. In view of the greater
Importance of the dealings In tho steel
stocks nnd' their need of support tho as
sumption Is not a violent one thnt n pur
pose to sustain the general market had
something to do with tho advance In some
railroad stocks. St. Paul was the most
notable example of strength, rising nt one
time 6'i points over Inst night. The South
ern railway stocks, Missouri Pacific nnd the
Pacifies and western railroad stocks gen
erally gave evidence of firmness,
Today's strength lu the tobacco stocks
continued, American Tobacco rising 3, Of
the steel stocks Steel nnd Wire was most
under pressure, dropping nt the Inst 4H be
low last night, after being vigorously sup
ported ubout 41. Tlnplntn got back to last
Thursday's closing level, but rallied a point,
showing a net loss of t. National Tube is
31,4 lower and the preferred 3s lower tbnn
lust night. Federal Steel loses 24. Amer
lcnn Hoop, Tlnplato and the Nntiounl Steel
stocks aro tne only ones mat do not show
losses.
Railroad bonds tended lower In some
stocks. Total sales stock, par value, $2,610,
000. United Stntcs 4s ndvanccd V In the

NEW YORK. Feb. 26.-COTTON-The

professional operations comprising the bulk
of It. Sentiment from the stnrt favored
'ower prices, though shorts were held In
check by fears of a bull movement nbrond,
whero prices held 140 points above a parity
with values here. Liverpool exhibited a

scalping clement, later falling to S.93c under
spurts of general selling nnd then closing
near tho high point on short covering. TI19

CATTLE There wns a liberal run of cnt
tle hero today, but nt the same time the
market was In pretty good shape. Buyers
started out to buy beef cattle n little lower
If poslble, particularly If they wero trot
choice. The better grades did not show
much change from yesterday, but tho
commoner kinds wero hnrd to move, as tho
liberal supply on hand gave buyers an
opportunity to discriminate. The markot
did not open very active and as a result it
was late before anything like a clenrance
was made.
Tho cow market ruled active today and
the better grades and also tho canners were
active and stronger. Buyers seemed to bo
fiartlcularly nnxlous for canners this morn
ng, and ns a result sellers had llttlo dif
ficulty In disposing of thnt class of cattle
at good strong prices. Tho medium prudes
moved fairly well, but wero no: sought
after tho way the choleo kinds and the
canners were picked up. It wns a good
steady to strong aftlve market, though, all
around.
Bulls were no moro than steady today and
In somo cases they seemed to be a llttlo
lower. Veal calves sold readily at gocd
steady prices.
There were not many stockers and feed
ers on sale today nnd the more deslrnnlo
bunches brought Just nboiu steady prices.
Some of tho commoier kinds wero not
particularly active and could b? dueled no
more thnn steady. Warmed-up cattlo were
bought for feeders to quit- nn extent nnd
early In the morning they ivero perhaps a
little stronger, nut later on thoy did not
bring quite ns good prices. Representative
