A very Hcli strike of gold 010 has Just been
mado In the Clara Bell mine, two miles
cast of Orcvllii. In Custer county. The mluo
has been producing n fair grade of ore for
several months, but for tho past four days
the ore has been cry rich. Your coriespond
rnt visited the initio this week and veri
fied nil of tin. minors as to tho richness
Tho ore comes from a vertical, which is
opened by n shaft nbout 150 feet ducp.
It Is n qunru ore, tho vein being about
twenty feet thick. Tho mini' Is a half nillu
from n two-stamp Tremnln mill, where
tho oro Is trented. This lltllo mill Is pound
ing out a fortune for tho owner of tho mill,
n Frenchman, nitmed Frank Robert. Owing
to n scarcity of water, the mill Is run only
n few hours n day, yet It yields nil the way
fiom $300 to $2,000 n month. Tho writer
casually examined tho pile of oro at the
mill which had Just been brought In from
tho mlno for treatment.
Lying on top was 0110 of the richest speci
mens of free gold over found In the Illnck
Hills. Tho owner then sorted over several
wheelbarrow loads of the oro and he was
rewarded by llndlng a half diucn very rich
fperlmrns. Tho writer Joined In tho ex
citing scinch for nuggets nnd two hnnd
somn specimens wore found. The best
specimen from tho initio Is n chunk of rock
as largo ns a small cocoiinul, which Is nt
lenst onc-hnlt gold. Anuthor specimen,
somowhut larger, had wires of gold from
one end to the other, with knots nnd warts
of tho yellow metal slicking out on all
sides.
How extensive this rich slrcnk of gold
Is, Is not known, hut for four dnn thero
hns been no Icl-up. The oro hns been
averaging $20 per ton gold for some time.
Tho vein Is becoming much wider and at
tho present depth another win has com
menced to appear. The ore carries never
less than $.1 11 ton gold, and from Hint up
Into the thousands.
It Is stnted that Omaha capitalists have
n deal well on for the purchiiM! of thli
bonanza mine, and that a number of railway
olllcluls llguro prominently 111 tho matter.
1 110 deal calls for nil of the ground owned

become richer with every foot. The St.
Elmo uompany had an opportunity to buy
tho Hebert ground at one time for n very
small figure, but foiled to do It. On tho
St. Elmo ground tho ore body was nearly
flat, but now it has become quite per
pendicular. Tho Clara Bell mlno Is by far
ho richest gold property in the southern
Black Hills.
