NKW YORK, Jan. 23,-Today's market
demonstrated Its professional character. It
was distinctively a trader market. The
trading was done by powerful speculators
with ample roscvirces. The transactions
were on a lnrge scale and tho price move
ment was much wider than lit on ordinary
room traders' market, but the method of
operations and the net result were much
the same. A scrutiny of tho net changes
for tho day will show that, except in a few
stocks, they are small and pretty well
mixed between gains and losses. Yet nt
oho time tho whole list wus at 11 level well
over yesterday's tlnal price. The realizing
movement In the last hour was sulllclcnt to
wlpo out almost all of tho earlier advances
and only the llnal slight rally saved tho list
from 11 larger showing of net losses than la
actually tho case.
Ruylng by room shorts to cover was
largely responsible for tho final rally. The
concentrated nature of the buying iind tho

CATTLI5 Thero was another liberal run
of onttlo hero today, and buyers wero
rather Inclined to pound tho market a
llttlo on beef steers. They seemed to want
tho cattle, hut they claimed that prices
nrc a llttl stiff, and. us it result, bids
wero generally a little lower. Some of the
best grades of beef steers that Just suited
tho nuyers may navo sold for right around
steady prices, but tho general market
could ho quoted weak to a dime lower. The
greatest decline was on tno unoesiraiiio
grades and wnrmed-up stuff. Tho mnr
ket wns rather slow, us sellers wero hold
ing for steady prices.
Them was qulto a few cows on sale, but
tho demand seemed to bo eounl to tho
supply, nnd ns n result tho market was In
good shape. Some of thn choicest hunches
wero picKcu up nt a tittle stronger prices,
and tho market as a wholo could be called
steady to strong. Tho common kinds
did not show much Improvement, but still
sellers did not experlenco much If any
dlfljculty In getting steady prices for their
nniaings.
Hulls, calves nnd stags sold Just about
In yesterday's notches, no particular
change In tho prices pnld being noticeable.
Tho feeder market continued in good
shapo today, nnd the supply being rather
light nnd tho demnnd good the market
ruled nctlve and strong on the desirable
bunches, Oood heavyweight cattlo are
selling nt very satisfactory prices, but tho
ugni common Kinus nre not in any too
good demnnd. They, however, sold todny
at fully yesterday's prices. Tho same Is
truo of sho stuff anil of stock calves and
bulls. Representative sales:

1IOOS There wus aunt her liberal run of
hogs heie today and tho market s'arted
ou'. rather slow, but unout steady. Tho
first sales were mostly .it $3.12' and $6 15,
but It took good heavyweight hogs to bring
tho latter price. Packers did not want
to nay over a shilling for tho generul run
or hogs and sellers were holding for $3.15,
find consequently tho hogs did not move
toward the scales at a. very rapid rate.
They wero bidding $5.10 tor tho lightweight
hogs and 15.12',. for the generul run of
mi ilium weights. It was ev.dent, however,
that the puckers wantd the hogs, and as
sellers hold out they hud to pay the prices.
As the morning udvuuccd the market took
on moro life and the closo wits strong r.nd
active. Tho bulk of all the hogs .old ut
$5!2'4fi5. 1714, and ns high us $5.20
was paid. The lightweights sold .it $3.12'4.
or worse, and the medium wclghtn ut $5.15.
nnd tho choice heavyweights sold at $Vl7',a
or bettor. As will tio seen from tho table
of nverugo prices the market today aver
ages a shade higher thnn yesterday, owing
to tho weak closo yesterday und tho itronii
cioso many, iteprej'j.itaiive sales:

Splendid Old liner's Story of Hon- IIU
Viiiiiib Son Died In the Field,
TI10 most dignified of all tho Poor gen
erals, (ielicral Do la Roy. has the uppeur
111100 of 11 Hebrew patriarch and the milli
ners of nn old-time French seigneur, says u
correspondent of the London Mall. And vet
Is De la Roy .1 true lloer. Tho line lines of
Ills Huguenot unrestry nro apparent in his
high-bridged, finely chiseled nose, his well
poised head, his delicate hands and feet
Ills breast Is swept by a well combed
bourd und his whole stature shortened bv
tho masslveiioss of his fine bend. Oenorul
Do In Roy stopped Into tho wnr with u fine
reputation us a louder. As a Hold cornet
ho had served his country in all of Its
native) wura slnco 18.12 nml when the Frco
State was at war with the Rasutos In IS0.1
ho had charge of a commando. For eleven
years he had occupied a seat in tho First
Volksriiad and gained for himself there a
widespread reputation ns the silent motn
lor. A lifelong opponent of Paul Kruger.
ho said some years ago, In my presence, to
very Intimate friends of his und mine: "No
good can possibly come to this slato until
that old man Is nut of the way." Ills
known opposition to President Kruger cost
him the position of cnmmiilidnut generul
when Plot Joubort died.
In tho unr General Do la Roy lias boon
tho silent man. And yet hits he done work
second to none In tho Held. Ills ohalico
oamo nt Madder river. The truo story of
Modder river battle has not yet boon told
Sufllco It that Oenorul Do la Roy, and not
Oenoral Cronje. was tho moving spirit on
tho lloer side. Ho chose tho positions and
ho. fought the battle. It was at this light
General Do la Roy suffered a. tnigle loss. I
give thn llttlo story exactly us the weather
worn generul guve It to mo. Remember
only that Its tragedy was lullultely deeper
when ono wus in the uetuiil presenoo of tho
tnelturn. sad-eyed man, with his soft voice
stilling the movement of his busv adjutants.
"Yes. I hud my oldest boy with mo In tho
first buttles. Ho wus only 15 nml not big
for his ngo. but wherever I went ho went,
nnd I think he did his duty.
"Wo wero walking together from one po
sition to another nt Modder river, when tho
boy began to lag a llttlo behind. I turned
to hint nnd nsked If ho was hit. 'Yea,
father.'
"I said: 'You had hotter come to thn
nmbulance with me, then,' nnd wc walked
across to the tent.
"Arrived thero ho lay down and began to
grow very gray.
" 'Aro you going to din, my son?' 'Yes,
father.'
"In half an hour ho wns dead, shot
through the abdomen."
These two men. Lord Roberts nnd Gen
eral De la Rev. have a great bond In com
mon In the loss of their first-born. No
sooner hud his eldest son been killed than
General Do la Roy was Joined nt the front
by his second son. n boy barelv vet 14. If a
T.oo-Motford bullet has not found him nlso
that llttlo lad will be bearing tho torrlblo
fatigues nf guerrilla, war at his father's
side today
Do !a Roy's massive head and heavy
board, set on a stmro, clean-c.lt bodv, glvo
him tho npponronco nf n man of very
medium stature. And vet I smmoue lie Is
a man of five feet ten and nne-hnlf Inches In
height. Ho wns a strange figure In the field.
Dressed In 11 course brown tweed suit, with
a light colored patch on tho seat of Ills
trousers, ho rodo u raucil llasuto nonv.
No man has over accused Do le Rev of any
thing approaching dlshonestv In him Is
grand material for 11 lnval Rrltlsh subject.
Ho voted against tho dlsnatch nf the ulti
matum In tho last secret session of tlm
Volksrnad beforo the war and he has
fnucht throughout us a patriot, not ns a
political agitator.
