from Injuries received In a drunken brawl
Saturday night. Undertaker Brewer took
charge of the remains and notified Coroner
Swanson. , As the assault was committed In
Sarpy county tho sheriff and county at
torney of that county wera notified and the
inquest will most likely bu held at Bellevue.

announced the authorities of Sarpy county

tho city jail here, but Chief Mitchell said

tariffs Is biought about by reason nf a pe
culiar condition existing among the rail
roads operating south of the Ohio and cast
of the Mississippi rivers. The roeuue of
no Omahn line, with tho exception of the
Illinois Central will be affected by reason
of tho Intended reduction, inasmuch as no
change In the rates from Oinaha to the
Ohio river will be made and t he losa will
be sustained b" the lines operating In the
territory beyond, which precludes all of the
Omaha lines except the Illinois Central.
Initial action In this matter was taken by
the Louisville & NasuUllc, which announced
a rut of 10 rents per 100 pounds on ship
ments of pi.cklng houso products to certain
southeastern points. The reduction was

Recently, It Is asserted, the Louisville &
Nashvlllo discovered Its competitors onco
mure indulging In manipulations of pack
ing houso tariffs nnd Its announcement of
n reduction In Its rnto lms resulted. Notice
was given that beginning February 1 tho
rnto to Atlnntn, Montgomery and Mobile
would bo reduced 10 cents per 100 pounds,
The reduction to these points necessarily

Tho Mobllo & Ohio followed tho Nash
ville's cut by announcing a similar reduc
tion In tho rate to Now Orleans, which has
always been on a parity with Mobile, and
to Meridian, Miss. Tho Illinois Central
authorized a like reduction to Jackson and
to virtually all Mississippi valley points.
There Is at present n Hat rata on packing
houso products from Omaha tn the Ohio
river of 20 cents per 100 pounds. It Is from
this portion of the rate on southeastern
shipments thnt the Omaha lines derive their
revenue, nnd it will remain uncbangrd.
The reduction of 10 cents will be mado on
tho rnto from the Ohio river to tho point
of destination on packing houso shipments
routed for southeastern points. '
Local packers are the iiuob most vitally
affected by tho changes that will become
operative February t. Tho reductions of
the rates to southeastern territory will
increase tho importance of tho Omaha pack
ing establishments In that taction and will
enable a inoro energetic campaign for busi
ness. Tho reduction of 10 centa per 100
pounds on the thousands of pounds of pack
ing house products shipped to that terri
tory monthly will mean a marked saving In
cxpenso to Omaha packers and a consequent
Increase ill their revenue.

Hampton A. Wntson. a Union Pacific
porter, residing at 0.17 North Twenty
seventh avenue, was painfully Injured yes
terday by a switch englno In thn yards nt
Council Bluffs. Watson, whllo waiting for
the trnn on which ho was to go out ns
a porter to start, ran diagonally across tho
network oT tracks and n passing switch
engine ran Into him. He was thrown to ono
side of tho rails and sustained a number
of cuts and brulues about his faro and
