Corn nnd mils each closed ViOViC higher and
provisions unchntiKcd to 15c blither.
That Liverpool did not fully reflect the
decline of 1'Jc hero yesterday was the cause
of u moment's firmness In whent at the
opening, which was Uc hlpher for May, nt
75 V to 754c. Tho came old stolic-llbcrn
receipts anil slack outside support , -was still
fastened about the market s neck nnd the
llrsl half hour saw n drop bi .4Vt1';c
tinder fairly liberal selling. The sollltiK
pressure waH weakened lout? enough for a
recovery to 74!ke, but trade was dull and
this attempt at recovery wnn soon aban
doned Hid a relapse to .lUftWe occurred.
During the lust fifteen minutes Mny rallied
sharply to 75c, at which the market c oscd,
flV4e lower. This rally was duo mostly to
moderate covcrltiK by shorts on a market
that had been sold to a standstill. Their
buvlim was based partially on the report of
exporters that 10! loads had been taken for
foreign shipment and partly on a desire to
take profits, as It was believed the foreign
sab-n had been mndo nt reduced prices and
that much of tho grain was of inferlor

Cora was Independently strong the
greater part of the session, ulthough prices
declined a little early In sympathy with tho
wheat weakness, The high price of hogs,
coupled with buying by provisions Inter,
ests, the light country movement and the
continued poor grading of receipts were
the ruling factors. There wiih little or no
elevator selling nnd a good rash demand,
although business was as usual hampered
by lack of cars. Hecelpts were BID cars,
none of contract grade. May sold between

reacted about 35 points today nnd closed
wwk at $2r,.15, against $26.50, the closing
(lguru of yesterdny. Some small sales were
mnde at the decline. Copper, though again
scoring n losi of 12 Cd in London to 71,
ruled extremely dull In the local market,
with an ensv undertone. Prices were $1

Spelter ruled extremely dul. Iron mar

Prices of Stocks Are Miistnlneil Only
Uy Some Slroiiu: .Miililpillntlou.
NEW YORK, Jan. 17.-The state of
mind of the speculators today was that of
extreme nervousness. The cloud of distrust
was somewhat dispersed during the course
of tho day und prices, were laboriously lifted
to ii level above last night, but uneasiness
recurred In the late dealings and tho mar-
aei ciosen witn urgent selling in force ami
with violent nnd disorderly breaks In n
number of Important stocks.
The excessive confusion of the price
movement dtirlnir the enrlv nart of tho dav
served to put speculators long of stock In.
ii mine or iiewiiuernieni. lucre was uoui
and powerful manipulation used to support
prices nnd to dissuade holders from selling.
Tho extreme dullnecs Into which the mar
ket fell after tho early selling movement
had been checked was proof of tho suc
cess achieved by this maneuver, but when
It began to nppear that the marking up
of prices had been simply for the purpose of
nffordlng n market to realize on the pres
sure to sell becamo urgent nguln, lending
to the final break In prices, The price
movement was so Irregular and mixed ut
nil times ns to defy any closo analysis.
The opening weakness was most mnrked
In the steel group and the conditions among
the grcnt steel corporations continued to
exnlto grave uneasiness during tho session.
The conviction Is taking form in specula
tive circles that n war between tins HtcU
companies Is dangerously Imminent, which,
If It tomes, will demoralize earnings In tho
trade. Manipulative support was effective
In purls of tlie list nnd Sugar, People's
Ons, St. Paul, Manhattan nnd a number of
the Paclllc and Southwesterly were lifted
from 1 to 2 points. Then support wus ac
corded to tho steel stocks and the princi
pal members of tho group, Including Fed
eral Steel, Tin Plate, Steel & Wlra nnd
Smeltlnir. were lifted nburnly nlwivn luxt
night. Meantime, there was realizing In tlie
railroad list nnd prices generally fell nway
mere, wnn occasional exceptions, widen
wero held up us u support to the market.
In the Html slump the whole list fell ugaln,
with very few exceptions, below last night,
Thero were such violent breaks as 4i In
Ilultlmorc & Ohio, 4Ji In .Manhattan, 3? In
Brooklyn Transit and Oreat Northern pre
ferred. 3i In Sugar nnd 21 In St. Paul nnd
New York Central. Mnnv of tho railroad
stocks wero nt tho lowest when the market
closed. Tho statement of President Hill of
tho tlreat Northern that he had never
owned n. share of St. Paul stock In his life
had u greatly unsettling Intluciico on
speculators who have worked In the convic
tion tnut Ht. Paul had passed to tho con
trol of the Orent Northern nnd Northern
Paclllc. Tho declaration of n 2 ncr rin
dividend on New York, Chicago & St.
i.ouis preierreii, wnero nil tun way from l4
to 6 per cent had been confidently predicted:
a readjustment of Ideas us to a lurgo milli
ner or anuiogous cases ami tun denial or
tho rumor that Metropolitan Street Hall
way hnd leased Manhattan upset another
lino of speculative calculations.
Tho tnonoy supply continues super
abundant, but the growing belief that n
notable outward movement of gold hns be
gun served us an additional drag on the
market.
Tho bond market was rnther nnlet nml
Irregular. Tho total sales, par value. $2 J2."i..

HOGS There wus about an average run

ihe market :cpt getting better and tho
packers bought the hogs ns fast .is lliev
cr.uld got to them. After the tlrst round
t'.Ucs were mo!tl at S5.17t and J5.20, nnd on
the Inst end they sold from 15.80 to J5.25.
As will do ,oeu from the mles boluw,
today s market Is nearly a duplicate of
yesterday's, only the market today cloicd
ut yesterday's opening and opened nt yes
terday s close. A few more hogs sold nt
j.I5 todny. and .it J5.17ti, so that the aver
