Labor union last night, called for tbo pur-'
poso of considering tho matter of the en
dorsement of a cnndldato for labor com
missioner and to consider a communication
from the auditorium committee,
At tbo opening of tbo meeting I. J-
Copenhnrvn Introduced a resolution re
questing tho appointment of deputy lobor
commissioner from Douglas county from
tho ranks of organized labor nnd not en
dorsing any particular riindidato.
Tho resolution was adopted before nny of
tho friends of tho vnrlous candidates
realized what was being done. President
Taylor decided that tho ndoptlon of tho
resolution did not preclude tho endorse
ment of particular candidates, much to
tho disgust of those who did not bollevo
that tho central union should discriminate
between worklngmcn.
Talk followed, In which the "red-but
ton" socialists advocated tho endorsement
of somo muii "not In thu ranks of or
ganlzed labor because ho Is forced to be."
A motion that tho union "does not endorso
any candidate who has not nt this tlmo re
ceived the endorsement of his own union"
was lost and a motion to tho effect thit
"wo do not endorso any ono for deputy
labor commissioner" followed tho samo
courso by an overwhelming tusjorlty on 11

Then Harry McVca moved that thu
union endorse all union men whoso appli

J. J. Kerrigan opposed tho motion a
ho recognized tho fort that thcro are two
kinds of union men, "good union men" nnd
tho other kind. Then tho motion was
changed "to endorso only those applicants
who hnvo received the endorsement of their
own union."

attorneys, Judgo Baxter has Issued a writ
of habeas corpus commanding Sheriff Power
to bring Kelly boforo hi 111 at 9 o'clock this
morning for n hearing to nhow caiifo
why ho should not bo released from thn
custody of the sheriff. Kelly was bound
ovor to tho district court by Judgo Vln
Eonhalor on tho churgo of bribery. Rail
was placed at 1,000, but Kelly furnished no
surety. Instead, his attornoys made u de
mand on tho court that ho bo released with
out ball, for tho reason that thcro Is no law
under which a mayor of a city can bo tried
for bribery. As Judgo Vlnsonbaler had nl-
rcady ruled on this point, holding that tho
olllco of mayor comos under tho hend of
ministerial positions mentlonod In tho
statutes relating to bribery, ho refused tho
request.

poopln havo found grounds to criticise tbo
sheriff for placing Kelly under no restraint
at all, because ho happens to bo tho mayor
of South Omaha. They assert that he ought
to bo compelled to furnish bonds, the nnmn
as others held on similar charges, or fall
ing In that, to bo held at tho Jail as a
prisoner. Kelly was a spectator In tho
court room when Judgo Baxter signed th
writ, but nono of tho deputies supposed to
havo him In custody woro present.
