The statement was made yesterday by a
city official that the sclzuro of a slot ma
cfclnu run on a cash basis In Mergen'rf Main
street saloon Saturday by tho police was
but the forerunner of a general crusado on
tho part of the municipal administration
ugalnst all similar gambling devices tn tho
city and that attention would likely bo paid
to other violations of tho law. In fact, this
city otllclul Is authority for the statement
that thcro would be n general "cloanlug
up," bo that Council Uluffs can start on tho
new year with as clean a record as possi
ble. With tho closing up of tho gambling
roims and tho suppression to a largo ex
tent of tho wlno rooms, tho city adminis
tration has been content to let things go
nlcng without much check. Tho result has
been that all over tho city gambling dens
hovo bucn run opculy In connection with
saloons without Interofcrcncc from tho au
thorities. It Is said, however, that there
Is to be a change and a radical one, too.
Tho understanding Is that a quiet tip has
been given that all these "card rooms" are
tt bo cloned nnd that no form of
gambling whatover is to bo permitted in
any of tho saloons. Certain saloons have
not paid the order closing wlno rooms any
nttentlon and the edict has gone forth that
either the wine rooms go or tho saloonu
will bo closed. Several resorts which bear
a rather sh&ily reputation arc to bo over
hauled In tho general cleaning up, It Is
said.
The crusades against vice inaugurated in
New York nnd Chicago arc said to be re
sponsible for the city administration de
siring to place itself on record before tho
community of Council Uluffs.
When asked if tho police Intended to
follow the cxnmplo of Omaha nnd prohibit
all klndB of slot machines, whether they
pnld In caBh or trade over tho bar or
counter. Chief Albro looked wise, but do
cllned to commit himself. Ho Bald: "You
see, wo havo seized ono slot machine which
was run as a gambling dovlco and It may
bo that wo shall go after tho others. Wo
will know better after this machine has

Mayor Jennings was reticent as to tho
orders for a general cleaning up of the
city and was not Inclined to admit that

Increases the pay of police officers and flrn
men from $60 to $65 a month nnd there
Kccms no doubt but that It will bo passed,
as all tho alderman arn said to favor it.
Alderman Iloycr Is anxious to got action on
tho measure In order that It may become
operative at once and come ns a Christmas
present to the members of tho pollco and
llro dopurlmcnts, It has beon suggested
that tho pay of tho night cnptaln of pollco
should bo raised to $70 a month and It Is
probablo that the ordinance will be amended

Judge Thornell rendered a decision In one
of the back tax collection cases this morn
ing, granting a temporary Injunction
against the Hoard of Supervisors from pay
ing any additional money to C. W. Wei
man, the collector, until tho additional col
lections should balance tho account with
the county on the basis of a 15 per cent
commission. Tho attorneys for tho county
mailo no presentation of their side of the
case, apparently being willing to have thu
temporary Injunction granted In order that
tho plaintiffs might bo compelled to put up
a bond for tho court costs and attorneys'
fees. Tho merits of the case will not be
tried until the February term of court,
when tho question of permanency of disso
lution of tho injunction will bo tried. Mr.
Welman has now collected a llttlo over
$10,000 and county warrants for half the
amount havo been Issued to him in pay
ment for his services. On the basis of 13
per cent his commission would havo been
but J1.F0O Instead of $6,000. It Is evident
the additional collections, which will hardly
amount to $7,500, will not make up thl
balance. There Is considerable Bpccula

tho permanent Injunction should be granted
and tho additional collections do not makn

Mr. Welman Is materially nffected by theso

work in Mills county also and has com

Sioux City badly scared and few of them

alleys and dark corners, grabs a woman
in his arms nnd holds her till she breaks

succeeded In kissing his victims. Tho po
llco seem unablo to get any traco of hlra.
Ono of his victims was Mrs. It. J. Small
wood, aged CO years. In the Jtrugslo with
tho stranger she fell and injured liernelf
qulto painfully. Miss Elizabeth Flnley,
nervy young woman, hit him over tho head
with a bottle of medicine nnd stretched
him on tho ground. Last night ho attacked
Mrs. Susan Christopher. Sho broke awny
from his embrace, but ho chased her for
nearly a block, making her almost crazy
with fright. Theso are only a few of his
cases.

a legal battle as hard fought as any which
has occurred in this county for somo time,
Mrs. Hannah Jamison was delivered to the
officers and taken to tho county Jail, where
she will rcmutn for eight months If It
chances that sho is required to servo her
entlro tlmo of sentence. She wns charged
with tho receipt of stolen property about
a year ago, and after a bitter, trial was con
victed In tho district court. Not satisfied
with the verdict her attorneys appealed
tho caso to tho supremo court and thcro
tho mnttcr has rested until n few weeks
ngo, when the verdict wus affirmed and tho
order Issued for her Imprisonment. Owing
to somo technical error In tho papers her
committment wns not Issued at tho time
and it was only yesterday that they came
back from Des Moines, duly signed nnd
senlcd. At B o'clock, after tho officers had
hnd two physicians cxamino Mrs. Jamison
nnd assure them that tho transportation
to the jail would not lnjuro her health
sho was takou. Tho woman's cell had pre
viously been fitted for her In as comfortablo

Mrs. Jamison Is over 60 years of ago
nnd was for a long tlmo a most respected
citizen of llcnton township. Hor '.laughter
Is now making an effort to secure her par

Iowa State Horticultural society, notwith
standing somo sharply denned disagree
ments nraong members with regard to the

fectivo work for tho Improvement of horti
culture In Iowa. The society Is supported
by tho state, a liberal appropriation being
mudo at every session of tho legislature.
A part of this money is spent for dissemi
nation of information about fruit and
follago trees and plants, but tho major
portion gocB to tho support of experiment
stations whero tew plants ami trees ami
fruits adapted to Iowa conditions of soil
und clinmto may bo developed. There aro
now eight experiment stations receiving
somo BUpport from tho Btatc. Thero was
at ono tlmo nineteen of tho stations, but
it wns found that this was scattering mo
work too much. Ono of tho stations Is on
tho grounds of tho Iowa Stato college at
Ames, whero extensive work In tho study
nnd development of trees nnd plants has
