Dcninud for Stocks Almost Mqunl to
Period 1'oIIimvIiik Election.
NEW YORK. Dec. 11. Tho demnnd for
stocks today was so large, so urgent and bo
widely distributed ns to suggest a rccrtl
ilescnco of tho bullish enthusiasm of tho
period Immediately following tho election.
Tho motives of tills buying and the strength
of tho wholo market wero somnwhut mys
terious. Tho anthrucito group had Its own
particular causo of strength In tho circum
stantial assertions of tho passing control ot
the Pennsylvania Coal company to tho Erie
railroad and tho consequent frustration of
tho plan for a now railroad from tho coal
regions to tidewater to satisfy tho Ideas
of tho independent operators regarding tho
transportation rates. Tho threatened con
struction of this road has long been a bug
bear to tho uuthractto companies and tho
adjustment of nnthraclto affairs Involved in
tho abandonment of this plan would be of
great Importaiico, as was plainly shown by
tlw buoyancy of nil tho stocks In tho group.
No nuthorlty could bo had of tho reports
current, but tho record ot tho tnpo was
Btroncly confirmatory. Now Jersey Cen
tral was nn enrjy exception to tho strength
of tho group, but recovered later. Tho Erlo
biocks ami untnrio c western, as ucmg
mnt tmmmllntnl v nfTAntmt liv thi t1ir,.nf
ened competition, led off In tho movement.
Later In tho day tho Rending stocks as
sumed tho leadership nnd wero nbsorbed In
enormous blocks up to tho closo of tho mar
ket. Thu gulns In tho group ran from 1 to 3
points. This movement was tho mainstay
of tho market, but tho gcnernl strength
was too BtriKing to uo explained ns a sym
pathetic movement. Thero was tomo de
mand for London account on the opening
of n new account Incident to tho settle
ment, but this buying Is. called professional
nrbltrago operation nnd may oiiglnato
either In Now York or London. Tho most
marked effect was Tiroduced on Southern
Paclllc. which oncned uo 1U and advanced
later to 43, closing at tho highest. Tho be-
ner mis prevailed in wall street that tliero
was a very heavy short account In some
of tho railroad stocks, for which western
speculators wero liable, tho speculation ex
tending also Into tho steel Blocks. Tho bear
account in tho lntter group has been aimed
at by tho advanco this week and may havo
been reachei In tho railroad group today.
Tho money market outlook continued
threatening, so that tho supposition Is
aroused that today's buvlne Is for tho nc-
count of financial Interests which are Inde
pendent or tno ordinary resources of tho
money market. Tho transfers of currency
through tho subtreasury to New Orleans
reached $550,000 today, which Is tho largest
sum of any day In the recent movement.
Tho subtreasury ban already taken from
tho market this week tho sum of $2,208,0iw,
so that tho Inroad on tho resources of tho
bnnks promises to bo as great this week as
It was last week. Tho mld-monthly dis
bursements for pensions and tho nntlclpa
tory payment of government Interest can
not affect tho money market until next
week or tho latter part of tho month. Tho
London monoy market was not iiffcctcd
today by yesterday's sharp drop In the
sterling exchange hero and exchnngo rates
fell a further fraction. This may fore
shadow an acquiescent1" in the Now York
demand for gold. Tho shipment rrom India
to London or J2.50O.OOO In 'gold in payment
for silver may bo Intercepted and diverted
to tho Now York market, as was done with
tho last similar shipment. Rut its arrival
In New York would bo too remote to af
fect tho present sltuntlon, even If It were
ascertained. Whatever tho motive, tho
strength In stocks was well maintained to
tho closo, except In tho steel group.
Tho bond market was irregular. Total
sales, pur value, $4,015,000. United States
refcrenco 2s. coupon, advanced '4 per cent
on tho lust call.

CATTLE There was a good, liberal run
of cattlo hero today and tho great bulk of
tho recdptB wero cornfed steers. Thero
worn a number of cholco bunches of rat
cattle, but at the same time there wero a
good many warmea up ana nau-rai came.
Tho market was very alow in getting
started and packers bid way lower on ail
kinds. Thoy did not seem to be at all
anxious ror supplies, and, as a result, noth
ing was aone until a laio nour. jjhib
ransed all the way from a dime lower on
tho choice grades to 20c lower on tho
warmed up and half-fat stuff, and In a
number of cases sellers found It almost 1m
possible to got a bid on the less deslrablo
kinds.
With tho exception of tho best grades the
cow. market was also lower today. Thero
was very llttlo poor stuff, either cows or
ncircrs, ami, us mo acmanu wun in guou
shape, prices held fully steady. Tko
mnifliitn klnils and canners. however, were
lower again today, the decllno amounting
to fully a dime. Thero has been a good
denl of tho common stun coming ror some
llttlo time, which gives buyers a good op
portunity to pound down tho market.
Thero wero very few feeders on sale
today and tho few good ones offered Bold
at good strong prices. This would apply
to steers, cows and heifers or bulls, tho
demand for choice stock cattle or all kinds
apparently being fully equal to the supply.
Tho common kinds, however, wero only
Just about steady, ns tho country buyers
do not tako hold of that class of cuttlo
In very good shape.
There wero very few western range cat
tlo on sale today, and what were offered
sold about tho samo comparatively as Is
noted abovo for the native cattlo. Repre
