Omaha School Attendance an Eloquent
Commentary on Gensni.
ST, JOSEPH'S ENROLLMENT LESS THAN HALF
Educator Iteturna from Impaction of
Mlamurl Clt .Schools with
Much Higher Hmjirct for
Thnac lu Omaha.
"Comparison of tho school records of
Omaha and BL Joseph are enough to con
vltco ono that Omaha Is much the larger
city and that tbo recent census has either
dono Omaha a great Injustice or has given
fit. Joseph padded returns,", said W. V.
Johnson, member of tho Omaha Doard of
Education, who has Just returned from St.
Joseph, whoro he addressed tho annual
meotlng of tho Northwestern Missouri
Ttachcrs association. "Tho total enroll
Kent of tho St. Joseph schools Is 9,700,
wfcllo In Omaha tho enrollment U 19,600.
In tho St. Joseph High school thcro are TOO
pupils, as against moro than 1,500 In tho
Omaha High school.
"St. Joseph has only 150 school teachers
and tho number of teachers In tho Omaha
schools exceeds 400. Separate schools oro
maintained In St, Joseph for tho colored
children and tho number of teachers Is
larger on this account than would be re
quired to teach 9,700 children in Omaha,
where tho color lino Is not drawn.
"Tho St. Joseph schools are not only
mailer than those of Omaha, but the build
ings aro inferior and the equipment Inade
quate. Many of tho buildings are old
fashioned structures, which lack all modern
facilities for heating and ventilation and
re In Btrango contrust to the new buildings
In Omaha.
"I know of no other western city where so
little attention Is paid to tho schools. The
school yards nro not well cared for and
look as though thcro had been but ltttlo
attompt to beautify them and mako them
attractive. A visit to St. Joseph cannot
fall to mako an Omahan better satisfied
with his homo schrolB. Such a school
building as tho Cobs would be a revelation
to St. Joseph people."

Tho Moravia National bank has filed In
the fedcrnl court n suit against John J.
Duller and others for tho purposo of sot
ting asldo deeds and cancelling a mortgage
on certain town lots In Lincoln. Tho peti
tion alleges that tho plaintiff secured a
judgment against Hutlor on notes In the
Lancaster county district court, execution
upon which was returnod unsatisfied; that
tho tlmo of paytnont of these notes had
been extended under tho Impression that
the defendant still owned certain property
of which ho wus possessed at the tlmo they
wero made, when In fact he had parted
with tho lots for no consideration. It Is
further cited that Butler's son, to whom
the lots were sold, mortgaged them to the
I'hocnlx Mutual I.lfo Insurance company to
nccuro a debt of his father, and that all of
theso transactions were devised for the
purposo of hindering tho collection of tho
Judgment of tho plaintiff. For this season
tho plaintiff asks that tho tltlo of tbo prop

and that tho lots bo sold to satisfy the
Judgment of tho plaintiff In tho state court.

The conference of tho "roform forces"

promises to have llttlo political significance.
Tho proposition, which emanates from tho

club, Is for n meeting of representatives of
tho populist, social labor, Boclal democratic,
prohibition, mid-road and worklngmen'a par

Inasmuch as tho socialists and tho prohibi

of tbo party make light of the conference
proposed by tho mld-roadera and assert It

scarcity makes them an Inconsiderable factor
In any political movement.

It will bo decided beforo tho last week In
January who shall represent the Omaha
Gun club In Its return shoot with Kansas
City. The match will bo held In the Mis
souri town some tlmo after January 15.
There was a meeting of the gun club at
Townsend's Friday night, nt which about
twenty members were present. Tho mci
all feel keenly the defeat of the team at
tho last contest and expressed determina
tion to win back their laurels. Q. F.
Brucker was appointed as manager of the
squad to go to Kansas City' and was em
powered to select tho men who will com
pose that team. Whon tho mattar of funds
for the proposed trip was broached, $160
was raised In less than ten minuted as a
purso for expenses.
Thcro are a number of pescons who da
slro to represent the team besides those
who shot at Omaha last week. Mr. Brucker
has not finally decided upon tho means to
be adopted In making the selection, but It
Is said that tbo record of tho men on tnc

the team.
Ono plan favorably mentioned is for a
provisional team to bo Immediately an

From the records made In these challenge
