A week ago Root employed a woman in
tho offlco as an apprentlco, making two
futuro printers for Icbb than flvo Journey
men In tho office. Tho union called his at
tention to tho-breach ot tho agreement, and
bo requested tho organization to admit tho
older apprentice to tbo union before he
had served tho required apprenticeship,
This tho union rofused to do, and requested
him to stand to the agreement. Rofusal on
his part ft aa followed by tho declaration of
a strlko yesterday.

22 years, formerly of Decatur, 111., at
tempted to exterminate an ontlro family, hi
relatives, at South Park, ntno miles from
Seattle, with an axe. He smashed la tho
head ot four, leaving them tor dead, and,
shot one man in the back and attempted to
kill a deputy sheriff.' Before finally being
captured Senton was shot twice, but not
fatally, by Deputy Sheriff Kellcy.
The only one killed outright was fc'eaton'a
uncle, Daniel Richards. Beaton broke in tho
head o( hi sister, Mrs. Roy Clark, but her
recovery In hoped for. The other two victims
wero Myrtle and Haiel llapgood, aged about
10 years, children of a former husband ot
Mrs. Clark's. The skulls of the little one
wero crushed and then tho bodies wero
thrown Into a manger in the barn. It wu
supposed they wero dead, but a late 'report
from the county hospital say that tho skull
ot one of tho children had been raised and
thero la hopo ot recovery. The other child
will undoubtedly die.
A man named Kennedy, who got in Sea-
ton's way after the tragedy, was shot in the
back, but not seriously. Beaton fired three

down with two shot,' Which took, effect la
the head and arm.
