Dullest Hay on 'Ohanis Since 4he
Mondnr llefore Election.
NEW YORK. Nov 28 Today'a stock
mnrket was the dullest since the Motnlav
preceding the election, There were no .Pal
ings on any considerable scale and the
movement of prices was sluggish and Ir
regular and not Important. The market
narrowed very considerably also, the num
ber of different stocks dealt In being
smaller than for many days past. It la not
Improbablle that tomorrow's holiday
prompted the curtailment of speculative
ventures. The dealings were left very
largely In the hands of room traders and
the larger Interesls and the public was ap
parently out of the market entirely. There
." no great pressure of liquidation, but
when any considerable volume of stocks
was offered there was not sufficient demand
to sustain the prices, on the other hand
even a smnll demand was sufficient to effect
a considerable advance In price, as the sell
ing orders In the market were also on a
very small scale. The mnrket was ver
generally heavy In the earlier part of the
day. largely from the Influence of wenkness

to the apprehension th.' t New York may
have to absorb considerable speculative
liquidation from that sourre In fact, the
selling for London account today was es
timated ns high as 76,000 shares on balance
Hoth cnll money and discounts In London
are above the bank rate. Under ordinary
circumstances this would lend to the ex
pectation of an advance In the bank -rate
tomorrow, but the scarceness of money Is
due to the preparation for the exchequer
bond Issue on Friday When thl" Is met
there Is likely to he a reflux of government
funds Into the money market, which would
endanger the control of the market by the
Ttnnk of England The action of the gov

call loan rates falling away n shad" In
enlte of the continued ebeorptlon of funds
on lub-treasury offerings nn1 the postpone

interior. The recent dally average tranefer
of $iao.ofln to $200,000 to New orlenns was
supplemented bv the transfer of $200,000 to
Chicago through the sub-treasury today.
If the activity of Interior business Is to
make new demnnds on New York for cur

which was moderately active and Irregular.
A number of October statements of net
earnings of railroad companies were pub

with the exception of the Rending company.
The net enrnlncs for this company for Oc
tober were $1,232,096 less than for October
of last vear. as a result of the miners'

Alton stocks were largely bought at ad

were notably weak, but recovered part of
their losses.
The bond market was quite active and
yielded In snots. Total sales, par value,
$4,055,000; United fltates bonds were all un
changed on last call.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says: A fair amount of
business was done In the markets here to
day, but the tone was dull on the rumors
of a spreading disaffection In South Africa
and expectations that money will be tight
until the new year. Americans were mod

NEW YORK. Nov. 28. COTTON Excite
ment and apathy alternated In today's mar
ket. The customary pre-holiday evenlng
up occurred and this served to bring about
freuiient waves of biylng and selling; but
as a rule business was small and of a pro
fessional nature, with the trade nil at sea
owing to the seml-sensatlonal fluctuations
abroad and to more or less conflicting
rumors that strong purties were making a
bold attempt ut manipulation. The market
opened weak at 21(1S points lower, under
liquidation and heavy outside selling,
mostly for foreign account. The haste to
unload followed a fall of ifu'7 points In the
Enifllsh markets, said by private parties
to have resulted from a drive by Interests
known to represent Influential American
partita, Boon afterward the story gained
emulation and was quite generally ac
ctpted as true that a leading Philadelphia
export house and several well known New
Orleans parties had formed a plan to
manipulate the English. New York and
New Orleans markets. Following the open
ing there was a spurt of covering which
carried prices up 15 points from the low
mark Soon after noon the market suf
fered a severe rolapaa under room and lleht
outside selling and for most of the session
was irregular. The ( lose was steady, with
prl. es net I to 17 points lower.

SHEEP There were only a few ears of
sheep here today and what fat stuff there
was sold readily at steady prices. Wethrrs
that brought $4.00 yesterday sold for the
same price today, so that all that can he
said of the market Is that It Is steady.
There were no good fat lambs on sale to
make a test of the market on that class
of stuff.
The few feeders here also sold In Just
about yesterday's notches, the demand be
ing apparently sufficient to take the few
cars that were offered at steady prices.
