October, which Is always a great month
the export trade, surpassed Its record
this year. Tho merchandise exports
reached tho enormous totnl of $103,000,000,
ad as Uiu merchandise Imports fell off a
llttlo the excess of merchandise exports
was $92,475,226, or nearly $3,000,000 per day
during tho month. Thero was nn excess
of Imports of gold of $9,300,000 and an ex
cess of exports of silver of $3,120,000 nnd
tho bnlanco of trado on these Items for tho
month was no less than $80,220,000.
I-or ten months tho excess of merchan
dise, gold nnd silver exports was $527,233,-
112, which Is larger than In tho samo period
of nny other year. All tho figures for tho
month nnd year mako new records. The
remendous volumo of our export trado ls
not tho only rcmarkablo fact which theso
figures exhibit. It Is Interesting to noto
that though we have sent nbroad $499,CG7,000
moro merchandise than wo havo received
from abroad, wo havo also exported an
excess of $7,000,000 gold and $20,400,000
liver slnco January 1. These figures In
dicate that our credits abroad must be ex
ceedingly large, though Just what the
amount Is no ono can say, owing to tho
tact that thero aro no available statistics
covering tho movement of securities.
Apparently tho foreigners sold a con
siderable quantity of stocks and bonds In
ho first half of tho year, but recently
hey have been tnklulg them back. This
country has Invested $$0,000,000 In foreign
obligations slnco tho first of January, but,
supposing the movement of securities to
havo balanced, thero ls yet to bo ac
counted for moro than $440,000,000 in the
rst ten months of tho year.
Tho tncrcaso In merchandise exports in
October wns chiefly In cotton. Tho foreign
consumers for many months did not buy cot
ton and stocks ran down lu Europo to an
unusually low point. Tho expectation was
that tho new crop of cotton would bo a
very largo ono and that prices would fall.
Exactly tho opposlto proved to bo tho truth
and tho foreign consumer has been com
pelled to buy cotton at tho highest prlco for
many ycars. In October lho valuo of cotton
shipped was moro than $00,000,000, as com
pared with $23,000,000 In tho samo month ot
1S09. Tho cotton exports aro stilt large
and will bo for some months, during which
tlmo wealth will literally pour Into the
hnnds of tho southern planter.
Tho large credits of tho country abroad
havo suggested tho placing ot moro foreign
loans here. Europe Is not In n position to
pay for her bread, meat and cotton In gold.
Recently tho small sum of $10,000,000 has
been sent to this country, nnd tho cash
piles ot tho world havo been scraped In
order to get It together. It ls perfectly
apparent that tho Dank of England ls not
In a strong euough position to forward more
gold this season, and as tho chief creditor
this country has not Insisted on It, but
stands ready to help tho bank out lf neces
sary next month. Tho total favorable
balance on tho vlslblo Items of our export
trado for ten months this year ls largo
enough to test tho capacity of tho world's
ability to pay for uomo months.

In tho four states, Colorado, Wyoming,
Utah and Idaho, whero women havo the full
right ot suffrage, thcro was a decided Increase
In tho woman vote. All theso states were
carried by Dryan four years ago. Two gavo
a majority for McKlnley and tho republicans
gained heavily In tho other two. In n gen
cral way no division Is apparent In tho four
states along sex lines. Dut thero aro a
fow Incidental features of special interest.
The democratic candldato for congress In
Wyoming wroto a lotter somo time ago In
which he eald that tho woman vote was the
easiest to get, the easiest to keep and the
easiest to manipulate ot all elements In
politics. As n result, the republican can
dldato for congress ran 800 ahead of the
electoral ticket and has tho largest majority
over given a candidate In tho stato. Two
thirds of tho women of Wyoming, It ls
stnted, voted for McKlnley.
Utah gavo tho country tho greatest
surprise of the election, and tho woman voto
had something to do with tho rcmarkablo
overturn of the democratic plurality In
1S98 of 51,000. Only ono woman rnn for
ofilco In Utah nnd she was defeated. She
was a delcgnte to tho last democratic na
tlonnl convention and seconded Dryan's
nomination at Kansas City. Though presl
dent of tho Utah Woman's Democratic
league, sho was beaten for tho lower house
of tho legislature, nnd the extent to which
sho ran behind shows that many women
voted against her, Tho woman voto In
Colorado Increased from 48,270 In 189(1 to
80,943 In 1900. Dryan's plurnllty In tho state
declined from 134,000 to 35,000, but tho fall
Ing off was not specially duo to tho woman
voto. In Wyoming tho women cast nearly
ono-thlrd of tho aggregate vote of 23,000,
No chango ot a radical nature has yet been
developed by full woman suffrago In tho
four small states where It Is established.
