About 100 persons attended the first tea
tlont of night schools held Monday night In
Coaeaius end Cass rchools. At Cats
school the gas coapany had failed to make
the proper connection with the mains and
there was cot sufficient light to carry oa
rt rular work. After the ptpll had been
classified they were dismissed. Regular
work was taken up at the other building,
however, and continued until t.iO.
Miss Lida Haana It la charge of tbe
work at Coaealu school and Is assisted
by Mrs. Josephine E. Carroll. The work
at Cass Is supervised by Mis Mlnta Cooley
and the other teachers la tbe school are
Mr. E. R. Parke, Miss Eally Dorn and
Mist Mary A. Reld. Most of the pupils
who entered the rchools are of about the
age usually found la the higher grade
and the High school The oldest person
who tntered I 40 years old. Nearly all
of the adults begin work with the youngest
children, some of tbea not cvea being
able to read the simplest print.
In the Coaeaius school a lire number
of the children vho entered are employed
ia the packing houses and It was found
that many of thea were so tired that they
could scarcely keep awake until S:S0. On
this accouat the school will opea at 7 In
stead of 7.30, as was originally announced,
tnd will be dtsalssed at 9.
Superintendent Tearse expects the enroll
meat in the schools to reach 200 within a
few weeks. More than 150 attended last
year and froa the nuaber of inquiries
which have been made tbe Board of Educa
tion believes the deaand for sight work it
much greater than it was a year ago.
