NEW YORIi. Oct. 23 The warning en
tallied In yesterday's Hurry In call money
to 6 per cent was taken by tho speculntlv
element today nnd tho rather Intemperate
buying which has Hooded the niarkot ulnce
tho latter part of last week was materially
curtailed. Thcro was n great deal of busi
ness ilono In the first hour, but tho selling
to realize clearly outweighed the buyl k
demand. In spite of some sharp manipula
tive activity In specialties, nnd the nveruco
of prices went below Inst night The "il
lug was not nil precipitate nnd showed n
tendency to decrease as prices receded to
tho lower level, but when efforts were made
to bid up prices again It was found that
selling orders were wultlng at the hlsher
level In sulllclent volume to force prices

Interest Known to e::lsl In It and the it

appeared when the quotation got below 60.
Tho price was 544 today, when the iidvnnce

through some very heuvy selling, without
material tetlmrl; to a shade over 63, mak

ferred wns advanced 6 points corrclatlvely.
It was alleged In behalf of tho movement
that tho Impairment In tho earning power
of tho railroads In the I'orthwcrt by tho
shortngo of the spring wheat crop had ben
greatly overstated. The vtatenient of the
Northern l'acltlc for the second week n

closed Irregular at small net changes. The
earlier rales for cnll loans ruled from I to
5 per cent nnd It Is not unlikely that tho
reaction was duo to the nbstlnenco of the
speculators from further encroachment on
money resources. Hanks called loans to
tho extent of Fevcrnl million dollars this
morning, nnd the shifting of loans which
resulted caused quite an active bidding for
money. The vonts of the day had thi
effect of awnklnlng some fresh uneasiness
over tho money market conditions mil
these wcro not altogether allayed by the
renewed weakness of cxchnnire, especially
Paris cheques. The transfer of currency
to New Orleans through the sub-trensury
was also renewed today. Much doubt ex
ists regarding the effectiveness of high call
lonn rates In renewing gold Imports. The
gold thus fnr secureil was the result if
scouring the open market supplies nil over
Europe, without nrouslnp the opposition of
tho great central banking Institution?.,
which would have to be resorted to for
nny considerable gold supplv. Horrowers
of time money show a disinclination to pay
hh much ns 5 per cent, while bankers have
counted upon a pood market for'tlme loans

CATTLE Thcro wns an exceptionally
light run of cattlo here today for a Tues
day and as a result tho market was In
good shape. About thirty cars or corn
cuttlo wero Included In the receipts and
packers took hold of tho kind that sillied
them In fairly pood shape, and bought
them up at Just abo.it steady prices. Some
of the common und half-fat stuff sellers
found difficulty In moving the same, as
has been the case for some time, and prices
on that class of cattle were certainly no
better today,
Thero wero only nbout twenty-five cars of
cows on sale, with the usual light supply
of good stuff. Huyei-H all seemed to want
a good many cattle and us u result the
market was fairly actlvo and In most
cases a llttlo stronger. Some or the butter
grades seemed to command quite a
premium, but as a rule the mnrket could
bo best described by calling It a good,
strong marKel.
Tho feeling among
feeder buyers was
better condition of
much Improved. Tho
tho weather and tbu
light receipts, with
prospects favorable for no very heavy run
tno rest or tills weuK, matie yarn irauem
better buyers today than they were yes
terday. Some of tho choicest grades sold
at prices that looked almost a dime higher,
but the sreat bulk of the cittlo brought
good, strong prices. The commoner kinds
were none too active, though, and did not
ehow much of an Improvement. Stock
cows und belters wero not very plentiful
und brought very satisfactory prices. Not
much change was noticeable In bulls.
There wero almost no western beef cattle
on Mile today, but packers were looking
for cattlo that would do for killers and It
Is safe to say that they would have brought
good prices had there been any here. The
market on cows was also In good shape
and prices were generally a little stronger.
Stockera and feeders moved more Ireclv
toflay than yesterday and sold all the way
from steady to n dime higher for some of
the choicest bunches. Representative
