a prisoner anil the key was In the hands
of the lonstable and tho constable was
downtown somewhere.
There were plenty of thltiRS In the store
to eat. Indeed. In ln-r puiposeless tours
to and fro across tho broad window' she
had to pick her way about pyramids of
canned meats and fish, but the cat hail

been in a desert drear. The situation was
that of I lie shipwrecked mariner aur
lounded by an ocean, yet dying of thirst.
For a week children passing the store
had noticed thn cat. dally rcHIiir thinner
and more emaciated. At llrsl she was fat
and sleek, and would hask ill I he

became evidences of nervousness In her

a deep, soulful nicw of protest. Finally
tho thing in thn window was a feline

And the children told their parents about
It, whli h accounts for tho t rowd outside.
It wouldn't do to throw n brick throiiRh
the window. Not one in the crowd but
would gladly have faced a charge of bur

the lock refused to be picked, and the
chimney throat was too small to admit the
body of even the smallest child.
Finally a shout of triumph from one side
of tho little frame building; someone had
discovered a loose grating over a cellar
window. There was a tall for volunteers
and little Tommy Crawford, 12 years old,
took off his cout. When, n moment later,
the lank feline was pushed up through the
window aperture, tho crowd cheered and
disputed over who ahould be permitted to
make the animal alek hy oerfoedlng It.
nnd as to Tommy, they promised to go his
