N'KW YORK, Oct. 10.-The stock market
today demnnsttnted convlti. lngly how large
short Interest, had been eliminated in tho
purse of yesterday's whdrsalo demand for
stockrlnn'd tho supporting Influence of this
element d-prlved the bull pools of a vcrv
effectmil Hourec of strength. The rnmpalgn
for a rise was by no means abandoned, on,
the contrary very powerful and resourceful
efforts were mad toward continuing the
upward movement of prices. Tho notable
buying, of the day was In I'nlon Pacille, In
which transfers of l.non. l.sm and even :i,ooii
share lots were frequently recorded on the
lape. It was the advance In .price that
brought out thoso olterliif) and lliey were
eonlldentiy nbsorbe.l by the brokers having
the advance In charge. On the ftequent re
actions the volume of dealings, both In this
stock and In others which were manipu
lated for h. line fell away notably, leading
to reciirrcift period. of dullness during the
day. Noifnlk it Western gave most con
spicuous evidence of concerted elTorts for a,
rice next to I'nlon Paclilc. Hut these move
ments by tho bull parly did not become
prominent until very large t.cll!iigt realize
had been accomplished. The greater part
of the llrst hour was given up to furious
activity and a somewhat wavering upwaid
movement, marking the feeding of the out
side demand by those who had accumulated,
stocks at the lower level. Tlu taking of
profits during this period must have been
on a very largo scale. The subsequent ef
forts! to resume the advance met with a
number of drawbacks and th. heavy under
tone of the market gained force as the day
nrogressed. The closing was distinctly
heavy, with prices below the best and net
losses In some Important stocks, while the
striking net gains were conllded to com
paratively few hisues. Partly as u cause
and partly as an effect there was a recur
rence of some of the depressing sentiments
regarding the speculative feature, which
have long overhung the market. The fact
emerged with some clearness that the large
short Interest which was driven to cover
sesterday had been actuated to take the
bear side by drawing an analogy with the
corresponding period In the hu't presidential
campaign, when the stock market wus vio
lently disturbed und rapidly declining. The
sudden brightening In the money outlook by
reason of Saturday's bank statement and
the gold Import movement gave the bulls
an opportunity for a swift turn agalmt
their opponents. There was some positive
weakness In People's-(las as a result of the
proposition for municipal control of the
selling price of the product, and some of the
steel stocks gave evidence of depression.
There were recessions In the antl-.-aelte
coalers In the delay of the stock settlement.
Ihese and other like minor conddHr.itlous
would be Ineffective In the rush to buy,
but In the pause, they had added In
fluence. One largo engagement of gold for
inport was announced, but there Is a strik
ing falling olT In the number of cotton bills
offering In the exchange market which
promises to reduce the accumulating credits
from foreign cotton buyers. The violent
reaction in the price of cotton has checked
the export demand, pending more settled
conditions In the trade. Hut while this has
dlmlnlKhed the cotton hills of exchange
there Is a corresponding falling off from the
large demands from the south for mnnev.
Mnuev conditions in New York today re
mained unchanged, but there was sonic re
newal of un apprehension that a later
money stringency might not be entirely
uvolded.
The bund market showed a continuance
or yesterday s Improved conditions, gen
erally advancing on an enlnrged demand,
iotal sales, par value, $2,I70,Wi. Culled
Slates ref. 2f-' and the old Is advanced K
per cent on the lust call.
The Commercial Advertiser's London Fi
nancial cablegram says: The markets here
were quietly llrm today. American seeiirl
tie were the feature, on New York orders
and professional buying, besides some Iter
Jin purchases. There was more veiling than
dealing however. Copi.er shar-s. on th

CATTLU Thero was rather a light run
of cattle here today for n Tuesday, ns
compared with the receipts of the last few
A'eekr. There was qulto a sprinkling of
corn cattle included In the offerings and
cnly n few cows, Tho market .m corn
cattle seemed In he rather! uneven this
morning. In some casen sellers were call
ing It steady to strong, while In others
they wero culling It fully a dim lower.
Tho market has been more or less uneven
for some time, as Is very apt to be the
caso when there are only a few coming, bill
today bids seemed to lie farther apart linn
usual. The market could probably host lie
described by calling it steady to a dime
lower.
As there was only about 20 cars of co'.vs
nnd heifers on sale the market ruled ac
tive and stronger. Hujvrs all seemed to
want fresh supplies, and as n result th-v
cleared the yards In good season nnd paid
good, strong prices for what they got.
Stock bulls were nclive ni steady to
strong prices, but heavy bulls that sell to
pacKors were not 111 very goou cicmanu unci
no more than steady.
Stackers and feeders were higher agnln
today, ns re.-clpts were light as c impifd
with n week ago and not many cattle wore
Iti the bands of yard tr.idern. Oood "tuff
sold readily nt strong to a dime higher
prices, and even the 'iss doMrablo grades
sold without much dllllcdlty at good strong
prices. Stock cows and heifers were 111
very light supply and they alvo were a
little stronger todav .
The western beef cn'tle that arrived today
sold fully .1 dime lilgh-r than the same
kind of cattle were brlnsln ul the dose c f
Inst week. Packers .ill want grass hef
and will pay strong prices m order to gel
It. Cows were active and strong today
owing to light receipts tnd good ilemand.
Feeders for the lame reason also sold all
the way frim strong to a dime lilgh-r
than yesterday. Representative sales:

SIIHKI' There was another good, liberal
run of idKep here today, but the bulk nf
thf reie'nls were composed of feeders
Packers were all liberal bu.vers of good
stuff, but the ciuallly of the offerings us
a rule was not particularly good. There
were a few unnd sheep here, however, end
us hlcli as J.'i.O." was'' paid. Some of the lcis
desirable grades did mil move unite as
I frcelv, but the market held Just about
Kienuy.
Choice Iambs were scarce today, and, ns
they aro In good demand on the part of
packers, they would have brought good
strong prices had there been mnny here.
There wore some good enough to bring
$3.00. but as a rule the offerings were not
as choice an on some dnys previous to this.
There being a Mb.-ral supply of feeders on
the market naturally make buyers rather
bearish and slow to take hold, but still not
much change was noticed In the pilces
paid, as the demand Is In good shape.
