NKW YORK, Oct ii. There was so out
burst of large and bum ant speculu tlon In
the stock market today, which lifted price
luring the course of the il ty from 1 to
oi er .1 points Tin biivlng came from
many divergent elements, but the patent
fact was that hm enormous number of
stocks wcro bought In an eager and con
fident manner on a rapidly rising scale of
prices. Forced eoierlng by a largely ex
tended short Interest had something to do
with the rise. lull manipulation by a
number of powerful cliques, some of thorn
new'j formed this morning, aided the nd
vnnce. The commission houses reported
that they had large orders to buy from out
sldo sources. What proportion these ele
ments had In the nggtegate of the day's
trading It Is not possible even to estimate,
hut no merely technical conditions t ilil
have resulted In so considerable a rise In
prices and In sut h a widelv distributed
strength. The true bnsls of the advatico
evidently was the change in the moncv out
look nnd the promise held out to the stH'C
ulntors In tlm speculative condition'.
There has boon 11 steady growth of con
Ildenco tn Wall street for some time past
In tho general outlook for luslness. It has
been firmly felt that 111 soon as e'ectloil
uncertainties were disposed of there wo'tld
bo a renewal of business ucttvliy up to the
high level of tho recent prospeious period.
On the other hand, the growing construc
tion of the money suppiv left room for
doubt whether the Intervening period could
bo safely bridged without such a monev
stringency as would be disastrous: to spec
ulative commitments. The conviction
cryntalllzed today that the danger that the
money strlngeiic;- was mitigated, and the
expected post-olootlon demand for securi
ties was discounted on a vor largi' scule.
Saturday's bank statement deinontrnted
that a very large contraction of loans hml
been effected witho.it serious harm to the
stock market, thus c onsen lug the surplus
reserve.
Tho gold engaged In llurope nst week Is
expected tourrlie In time to show In next
Saturday's bank statement. The Hank of
I'l'tinoe's announcement through the Asso
ciated Press of n determination to furnish
export gold to avert a monev strlngenoy
ntid the expressed readiness of the secre
tary of the treasury to act toward the same
end. bad a notable effect In strcPi'thenlng
coiilldence. The large additional engage
ments of gold announced this morning
promised further help to the local market,
although the receipt Is def rred tor several
weeks. This Is duo to the fact thnt the
gold comes from South AMoa The fact
was much dwelt on In speculative circles as
marking the resumption of the 0i1tp.1t from
tho Transvmil mines, but the exact source
. . Sll1l'1' ll"' channels through
which It Is to come wore kept shrouded In
mystery. Tin? fact that there were no de
posits nt the suhtreasury todav for transfer
of currency to the Interior cm hardlv be

ture Interior demands for currencv, the
more so as New York exchange at Chicago

NKW YORK , Oct 15.-COTTON The

of bull supremacy, which had obtained lor
a protracted period until last week s re

tho bull camp. The trade quite ueneraiy
had anticipated a higher Liverpool market
todav. anil exix-ctcd to see a turn for the
better here, ljtit the telegraph news was
rullv ns unfavorable as that received
Saliirilav. with vrlvale cables stating that
sentiment abroad had become Intensely
bearish. Our inarttot followed the Liver

:C(i 3s points under Irresistible pressure of
long stuff and heavy sales for short account
whenever tho market showed tho leant
sMiiptoms of reaction. Europe was tho
leader in the local selling, though southern
Interests were not far behind. The pjbllc
hurriedly unloaded col ton accumulated last

was there the leant Indication of a lull In

P,n points, with parties holding prollts In

was nervous and with prices down to the
lowest of tho day. The factors which led
to tho break abroad and here consisted of
heavv receipts at oil points, enormous ex

tunrkots of isfj, and reports of mag

where further out-t irn hud not been ex

seemed to have lost all their fears of a cot

CATTLE -There were not qulto as many
cattle here today ns arrived a week neo,
hut still there was a good liberal supply.
Taking the market as a whole. It was In
very satisfactory condition. The only class
of cattle that was any lower than last
week s quotations was cornfed steers. II. ly
ers did not seem to take hold of them
with as much life as they did last week,
perhaps owing in some extent lo the fact
that there were no verv choice cattle on
sale, and as a rule sellers were calling the
market a little lower. Hlds seemed to range
all the way from weak to n dime lower In
extremo cases nnd ns sellers were not
willing to make the concession It was some
11 mo befotc thoy changed hands. The
Chicago market was qioted a Hat dime
lower.
Cows of nil kinds were In good demand
this morning nnd ns on'v a few over forty
cars of cows nnd heifers were offered the
mnrket was active and fully steady. Even
tho medium kinds moved more freely than
usual today and ns n result the yards were
cleared of cow stutt nt a reasonably early
hour.
Yard traders succeeded In cleaning up
their supply of cnttlo In gool shape last
week and as a result they were all looking
for more todn. Tho market started out
nctive and stronger. It could safely bo
quoted strong to 11 dime higher and In
some enses snles were mndo that looked
15c higher. The greatest advance was of
course on tho cholco grades, but even the
medium nnd commoner kinds moved quite
free'y. Stock cows and heifers nlso sold
nt good, strong prices.
Tnoro was tho .lsual good demand for
western steers and those that were offered
brought good, strong prices, particularly If
they were (rood. Cows were nctive nt Just
about steady prices, while stock calves
wero In good demand and strong to a dime
higher, nnd some of tho choicest bunches
mnv have sold 15c higher. Representative

SHEEP This week started out with o
good liberal run of sheep, 14,731 head being
reported on sale, as against 10,507 head a
week ago today Favorable reports wore
received from other points nnd ns a result
tho market opened up active and Just about
steady. Th demand was good for both
sheep and lambs of good qunllty, though
there were not any very choice iambs
offered. Sheep sold as high as $3 90. Tho
situation can best be der.orlbed today as n
good, steady, nctive market all around
Feeders were In good supply ngnlti today,
but the demand continues equally good, so
that prices hold prartlrMly unchanged.
