Is under arrest at the city Jail charged with forging an order for a pair of shoes on S. A. Plerco A Co.. shoe deal ers. The order, presented last July, on which Nelson secured a J I pair of shoes, hears the forged signature of Miss Ella Os trom of 1020 Seventh avenue. Nelson formerly boarded with Mrs. Ostrom, but after secur ing tho shoes left the city. He went to Kansas City and recently returned to Omaha. The Information charging fc!u with forgery was filed In the superior court by S. A. Pierce. Officer Kd Smith had the rase In hand and learned that Nelson's sweetheart was to arrive in Omaha yesterday. This fact became known to Detective Weir and ho de cided to take a hand In the game himself. Ho failed to connect with Nelson, how ever, and the latter had every opportunity to get away again. On the advice, however, of his sweetheart he gave himself up to tho Omaha pollre and yesterday afternoon was brought across tho river Krlends of Nelson aro trying to settle the case. Thieves broke Into the harness store of Vogeler & Son at 127 South Main street Saturday night and forced the safe. The strong box contained about $2) In cash and ft number of valuable papers was taken from the safe. Among the papers stolen wero mortgages, notes, leases and valuable private documents. The thieves secured an entrance to the store through a cellar window In the rear. None of the goods In the store were dis turbed. The safe was pried open. The door of the compartment containing the strong box was also pried open. The thieves must have worked in the dark, as the pa trolman on the South Main street beat eays there was no light In the store at any time during the night. Footprints Indicate that there were two In the Job i Thieves broke Into a new house In course of construction at the corner of Twelfth street and Fourth avenue Saturday night and stole a quantity of carpentering tools belonging to J. W. Johnson of 2000 Fourth avenue, the owner of the houe. They also stole a number of mortlre locks and hinges blonglng to Contractor Wind. The barn of Elder Dodson at 316 Har rison street was also broken Into Satur day night, the thieves getting away with two collars and hilt of a new double set of harness. The family of M. Goodwin, living at the corner of Harrison street and Washington avenue, left a line full of clothes out In the yard Saturday night. STlAflT. la, Sept. 23 (Special (Fri day morning at 9 30 a stranger stepped Into the Exchange State bank and presented a check on the Adair County bank for 1,800. signed by Hon. W. B. Martin of Greenfield, and asked that It be cashed, stating that he had received It from Mr. Martin the evenlDg before, too late to get It cashed at Greenfield. The check was made out to William Burgen. One of the hotel proprietors was with hltn and Iden tified him as Mr. Burgen. Mr. Martin Is In the abstract and loan business and had made a loan to this man for the above amount on a quarter sec tion of land In Lincoln township, Adair county. When the papers were presented to County Recorder Chambers for record, after tho check had been given and tho deal closed for the loan, he (Chambers) became suspicious that something was wrong. This fear he communicated to Mr. Martin anil by comparison of signatures on documents In his office they discovered that the signature to the deed had been forged, as the man who owned the farm lives In Ohio. The horse took fright at a train near the Rock Island depot and dashed north on Main street. Nrar the Burlington depot It collided with a telegraph pole, checking Its career and throwing Wise heavily out on tho pave ment. He was knocked senseless for a few minutes. The wagon was broken Into spl.n ters, but the horse escaped injury. Court Work Ht Dnimn, ONAWA. la.. Sept. 23. (Special.) Dis trict court adjourned today after a three weeks' session A special session will be held In October to clean up the docket. The time of the court was largely taken up with divorce cases. In the Mapleton divorce case Mrs. Stodden was granted a divorce and allowed JI.00O alimony, 250 of which goes to pay lawyers and costs. In the case of Handel against Handel Mr. lUndel was refused a divorce, tho charges nlleged not being sustained. Ellen Fuller was granted a divorce from Thurston Fuller and J1.000 alimony allowed. In the Ileltman and O'Connor saloon cases a permanent In junction was granted against the buildings and they are likely to remain closed. In the I'to saloon Injunction case a tempo rary Injunction was granted against Rice. The Judge gave no decision In the noted ditch case of M. Tho association embraces the counties In the southwestern part of the state, which contain thirty-three churches of the Con gregational denomination. Rev. Dwight P. Breed, D. D., of Grlnnell Is moderator of tho association and has announced his inten tion of being present. Two sessions will bo held on Tuesday and three on Wednesday, the meeting closing thnt night. Several dishes on the window gill were broken, but no other damage was done. Early In the evening, while only the women of the household were at home, a stranger called at the house and demand-id money. On being re fused he tried to force an entrance, but was frightened away. Senator Dolllver was In the city last night on his way homo to spend a day or two In rest. After a few more speeches in Iowa he gpes west during the latter part of this week to Join Roosevelt and party, remaining with tho vice presidential candidate during his trip through Ne braska and Iowa. Senator Dolllver said that wherever ho had been he had been greeted by large crowds and at every place he has spoken there havo been from 2,000 to 3.000 prenent. He says that as far as ho can see the conditions In Iowa are excel lent and the people are waking up to the campaign In a manner that bodes well for the republican party. The international convention of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen was to hae adjourned Saturday, but some little business had to be passed over and left until Monday. Tho grand lodge officers hae ordered their special train for Tues day morning. All the delegates remaining In the city at that time will go cast with the special. The question of moving the headquarters of tho brotherhood from Peoria to Des Moines was one thing left over till Monday, but tho prospects of the move being made seem ,yery gloomy. The delegates to the convention seem to favor the move, but the grand lodge offi cers are against It. The fall term of Huron college opened with ap propriate exorcises Wednesday afternoon, attended by a large number of students and citizens. Rev. Edwin Brown of Wolsey delivered tho address. Brief remarks were made by President French and others. The term opeus under very favorable conditions, with an enrollment of students fully up to expectations, and indications point to an attendance greater than last year. The college building has been put in thorough repair aid much has been added In equip ments: several changes In tho faculty have also been made, the Important one being the addition of Miss M. L. Hill, graduate of Hanover (Ind ) college, who takes the principalshlp of the normal department. The chair of Greek will bo filled by Prof Henry L. Gage, late of Wooster (O.) uni versity.
