CHAM DKRLAIN, S. D.. Sept. 12. ,'Spc
eial.) P. F. McCluru has demonstrated
that tho artesian basin extends to the west
of tho Missouri river and has put tho ques
tion of artesian water beyond tho stage ot
an experiment on tho ranges west uf tho
tlvcr, ns It Is announced that wator has
been struck at a depth of 1.503 feet at his
ranch on Cedar creek. A good flow wni
had Immediately, but tho well drillers ad
vised going through tho granite formation
that they are In nnd tho gusher Is expected
within the next few days. When It was
learned that water was struck quite a oiir
wns created In real estate circles and a
large number of llllngs wero rushed Into
tho United States land olllco at Pierre on
lands lu the vicinity of tho McClure claim
and it is expected that a great many mora
claims will bo taken at once by new set
tlers, who have been holding back on ac
tcunt of tho scarcity of waler that has of
Into beon experienced on tho northern
ranges.
Mr. Mullen of tho 73 Cattle company
Intends to sink thrco largo wells as soon
as tho artesian well machinery can bo
gotten on tho ground. Tho finding of tho
artesian basin on the Sioux range marks
n new era in thu history of this country,
us tho question of good water for (.lock
has always been moro or less a draw
back. No better grazing land ran bo
found on cnrlh than on tho Sioux range nnd
the only question has boon that of water
In somo sections nnd this question now np.
