NEW YORK, Aug. 20. There was no rad
ical changu today In tho character of re
cent stock market operations. General news
bearing on tho situation was scant, but
what thero was furnished ammunition for
the bears. London, which hits latterly been
11 bu:er, turned seller for 11 small amount
and western niTpilngs were onlv on special
stocks. Oeneral weakness occurred In
stocks with which the ilrm of Flower ,i

ment of the death of 11 member of the I'rm
These Include- n half ilozen most active
Issues nnd losses ranged from 1 to 2 point?
with Hrooklyn Transit nnd People's das
leading. Elsewhere selling was In moderat"?
volume, but some pronounced declines oc
curred In Sugar, Tobacco, Consolidated riai,
Metropolitan Street rallwny. Railroad
stocks were much better sustained than the
specialties, declines extending to it point
only In St. Paul nnd Rock Island. While
the general tone throughout the greater
nnrt of the dav was reactionary, there were
periods of steadiness when the shorts re
dticed their lines. Snmp comment wnt
aroused by the sudden marking tip of Gen
eral Electric to 140.. Its closing price on
Saturday was 13C. Reports of 11 combina
tion with a rival concern nnd excollent
earnings were circulated, of which thero
was no confirmation. Fluctuations In tho
steel group were comparatively narrow, but
early losses were generally recovered In th"
late afternoon In reports of Improved trade

tho last half hour of tho session Pconlo's

The Commercial Advertiser's London

CATTLE There was a good liberal run
of cattle here today, but It wus composed
mostly of western grnss cattle. There were
quite n few cattle that were good enough
for packers, but on most grades yard trnd
ers wero better buyers than the packers, so
that the bulk ot the stock hero sold as feed
ers. Several trains wero late, which made
tho mnrket open a llttlo slow, particularly
011 killers. Corn-fed cattle wero In very
light supply, only a few good bunches being
on sale. Good cattle were fully steady and
In some enses strong. As high as $5,70 was
paid, which was considered strong ns com
pared with the close of last week. There
wero hardly enough hero to make a good
test of tho market.
There wns quite u liberal sprinkling of
cow stuff on sale today and the tendency
waa to buy It lower. The best grades, how
ever, held about steady, whllo the medium
grades wero rather slow and weak, emi
nent did not show much if any change In
one direction or the other.

Interest this morning centered around tho
stocker and feeder trade. Speculators all
seemed to be anxious for cattle ot good
quality nnd weight and outbid tho packers
on uli tho klndB that could bo used by
either. Tho market on the better grades of
heavy cattle was steady to strong and ac
tive, while tho common light rattle wero
slow and lower. As high as $4.00 was paid
this morning for a string of heavy cattlo,
which was the highest point reached this
season.
Western cattlo were In good supply and
what few sold to killers brought steady to
s,irn"ff-uprlcrs.'. Gootl C0VH woro steady,
whllo the medium grades sold a llttlo lower!
Good heavy feedet.i wero steudy to strong
