The value of the churches, schools and
hospitals of the Homnn Cnthollc church In
Omaha and South Omaha, now In course
of construction or to be begun this yenr,
exceeds $100,000, exclusive of tho valuo of
the real estate. These buildings Include
tho chapel at St. Joseph's hospital, $16,000;
Sacred Heart church, $23,000; St. Cccella'B
church, $20,000, and Houso of the Good
Shcuherd, $45,000.
The new ohurch of St. Cecelia's parish
Is to be erected at tho corner of Fortieth
nnd Burt streets. Plans are now being
prepared and Kather I). 1. Harrington, the
pastor, expects that work will bo begun In
thirty days. The building Is to bo of stoun
and will be ono of tho most artistic church
edifices In the city. A rumor In connec
tion with the now structuro has awakened
considerable Interest In Catholic circles
In th last few days. Among tho laity It
was stated with greater or less degrees of
certainly that the episcopal throne was
to fce removed from St. I'hllomcna's and
placed in St. Cecelia's, which was to be
come the cathedral until tho dloceso could
afford to build ono commensurate with the
Importance of tho diocese. Tho rumor at
present Is groundless. Bishop Scannclt
and his advisers have como to realize that
It is only a question of time when tho
ground now occupied by St. Phllomcna's
cathedral will have to bo sold, as the pros
enco of the rallrond tracks In tho neigh
borhood Is keeping pcoplo from tho church.
Building a cathedral is a work of years,
and while plans may bo discussed at this
time, It may bo ten years beforo any prac
tical steps are taken looking to tho con
struction of tho edlllco.
Work on tbo Sacred Heart church Is well
under way and It Is believed that tho
cornerstone will bo blessed somo time in
tho first wocks of September. 1'athcr

In South Omaha steps looking to tho
formation of a new parish will be taken
shortly after tho return of Father Mor
larlty, who will sail from Kuropo about
September t. A school building will bo
erected In tho packing houso district by
the paHtor of St. Agnes church, at which
mass will bo celebrated from time to tlmo
until tho nucleus of a new parish Is
formed. This will bo South Omaha's fifth
parish.
Tho dedication of tho chapel at St. Jo
seph's hospital will take place somo tlmo
In Septcmher. Improvements, tht extent
of which nro not yet decided upon, will bo
mado at St. Joseph's school, Seventeenth
and Center streets.

About 2 o'clock yesterday a gasollno
atovo exploded In tho rear of Joseph Munch'a
tailor shop at 1709 Leavenworth street. Tho
flame were quickly communicated to tho
rear walls and by tho tlmo tbo hoso com
pany arrived the tiro was burning on three
floors. A call hrought out tho entire de
partment on tho south sldo nnd for a few
moments It looked ns though tho block was
to bo destroyed. Flvo streams of water
woro turned on nnd tho flames were con
trolled after they had prnctically destroyed
tho rear of 1709 and 1711.
Tho block Is owned by W. W. Blnghnm
and Is occupied by Joseph Munch, tnllor;
Kcsler'a plumbing houso, W. J. Stlckney,
stationery, nnd Richard Burkctt, barber.
The, tipper rooms nro occupied ns living
apartmentR by several families. Tho loss at
Hosier's, at tho barber shop and at Stick
ney's was caused by water. Tho tailor shop
Is a totnl loss. Tho estimated losses are:
To building, $5,000, fully insured; Munch,
$600, partly Insured; Stlckney, $50; BurWott,
$100; Kcslor, $50, all Insured; to roomers In
tho second and third stories, $1,500, partly
insured.

considerably excited over tho mysterious
disappearance of Mrs, O. J. Warner nnd
her children and servant girl. Tho last

urday night. At that tlmo Warren came
home, It Is Bald, lu an Intoxicated condi
tion and drovo tho family out of doors.

The chief commissary of the Depart
ment of the Missouri Is Inspecting tho
samples submitted by the bidders who de
sire to supply Uncle Sam's soldiers with
food for the next three months. He was
Inspecting the flour yesterday, and flour Is
one article about which the government
Is exceedingly particular.
From each sample submitted two ounces
arc taken and mixed with one ounce of
water. The dough is kneaded for several
minutes nnd then laid aside to sec how
long it will keep Its shape. Tho better
the flour the drier tho dough will be. Tho
small loaves are then drawn out thin un
til holes appear. This Is to test the
strength of tho flour, the best being the
most tenacious. A certain quality 0f tho
flour Is then washed free from starch and
the finality of gluten determined.
Ono battalion of tho First Infantry has
arrived In the department of tho .Missouri
and Is stationed at Fort Leavenworth, and
other battalions are enroute. No com
panies of this regiment will be stationed
at Fort Crook, as part of It will be Im
mediately put In shape for service In China.
Tho other companies will bo required for
garrison duty at southern posts.

tho gold piece had a peculiar mark on it and
tho coin was found on tho woman when
arrested. Immediately after robbing th
stockman Ida boarded a train for Lincoln,
whero sho was nrrer.cd. Chief Mitchell or
South Omaha brought her back -from the
capital nnd lodged her in tho county Jail

State Bureau of Labor nnd Industrial Sta
tistics, R. B. Carter, city Inspector of
buildings, has been examining flro escapes
In Omaha and has found several structures
that arc very poorly equipped.
Somo time ago the owners of the Con
tinental block, located at the northeast
corner of Fifteenth and DouglaB streets,
removed a portion of tho fire escape on
tho south front of tho building for the pur
poso of maklug changes In tho windows.
Tho flro escape consists of Iron stnlrways
with platforms at each lloor. Tho landing
at tho second floor was equipped with a
movable ladder which could be lowered.
Both this platform and the ladder wero
takon away and have not been restored,
leaving tho flro escape In a dangerous con
dition. Many lodges have their meetings In this
block nnd there Is scarcely an evening
when there Is not a Inrgo crowd on tho up
per floors. Mr. Carter will tako Immedi
ate steps to prevent any moro public meet
ings In tbo building until n safo means of
escapo is provided.
Tho fire escapes on the building at 111
North Twelfth street consist of wooden
stnlrways, which are connected with
porches in the ronr of tho buildings. In
enso of flro the stairways would bo the
first part of tho building to burn nnd tho
Inspector has advised tho bureau to re
quire, safer escapes.
Complaints have been mado concerning
Inadequate escapes on the Arlington block,
but Mr. Cnrter examined the building and
found It In n satisfactory condition.
