NEW YORK, July lfl.-The derircsslon
caused on foreign stock exchanges by the
sinister reports from China hnd no effect
In tho local market nnd Indeed did not hurt
tho American securities In tho foreign
markets. Oood advances were established
In London for Union Pacific nnd for Balti
more & Ohio before tho opening here and
International houses bought freely In this
market of those and other stocks. The
total purchases for London account In this
market were estimated nt 40.000 shares.
The movement In Union Pacific was the
mnlnsprlng of this market all day nnd
Baltimore (t Ohio was also an active fea
ture. Tho movement In these stocks was
primarily based on tho rritlmntcs for the
year, as now mndo up. A statement of
Union Pacific earnings, having tho nppear
anco of authority, states that net results
for the yenr, expluslvo of land sales,
nmount to over $20,000,000, which would In
dicate a belanco of something llko 9 per
cent for the common stock. ThUi state
ment nnd the fart thnt Inside Interests
wero avowed buyers of the stock gave
color to the reports that It Is to be placed
on 11 I per cent basis. Tho Baltimore fc
Ohio system has yielded for the yenr not
enrnlngH of $12,381,791, from which Is to be
deducted fixed charges or nearly $9,000.(0)
and preferred stock dividends of J2.40O.OfiO.
Tho fact that net earnings for this system
hnve been Increased over 82 per cent for
the year Is due to the heavy outlays, made
by tho receivers In tho closing period of
their administration nnd charged to
operating expense Inst year. This state
ment, coupled with tho fact of tho recent
return from Europe of several of the direc
tors, was the occasion for rumors that n
dividend was to be declared on tho pre
ferred stock. The stock readily responded
nnd rose at ono time 3H.
The amount of speculation which hns
been based on riupposcd damage to the
com crop was made obvious bv the violent
break In tho price of thnt cereal and tho
rapid advance In tho stocks of corn-carrying
railroads. This helped the Union Pa
cific movement nnd that stock rose an ex
treme 2. Other gains ran from 1 to 1
for the corn grangers, Ilurllngton being
conspicuous. Hock Island was held back
by shorts, which was a target for the
bulls all day. nnd In the late dealings 110
disappointment over tho fact that no action
was taken on dlvldond at the meeting of
the directors today. The extreme dpcllno
was 2 nnd on a disposition to take protltM
reactions of about a point were caused In
a number of stoeks. The closing was
heavy at the reaction. Outside of the
grangers, the Pacifies and transcontl
nontals generally the market continued dull
and narrow. An early bulge In sugar was
owing to a rise In the price of the re
llned product and thero was somo late
Strength In the steel ntnelrn on tho
nf new orders being placed for Iron prod
ucts, The further advance In sterling ex
change and the urlmlAMlnn lie lnt.i.nnMnn'ni
houses that they expected to ship gold this
w-eek seemed to be without effect either on
the stock market. The bond market was
dull and prices moved both wavs. Total

Cotton Mnrkrt.
NEW YORK, July 16. Early events on
the cotton exchange were exciting nnd
thoroughly disheartening to tho bull forces,
which sufTered so severely In Saturday's
selling movement. Nearly all the Influences
beurlng on the market were again of a
prlco Improvement. In view of tho heavy
decline nnd enormous unloading on that
dav the bulls looked for a nntural reaction
this morning, llut tho cables were weak,
tho crop news good and the weather re
ports nearly all that could bo expected.
Moreover, tne China news wns such as to
prevent fresh Investment buying for out
side account. With Liverpool futures down
5(8ii points and spot cotton off our
market opened easy with July 2 points
higher and later deliveries 29 points lower.
There was a slight further decline after
the call and then a brief period of hesita
tion followed by, a sharp rise In keeping
with a turn In 'the tendency of prices
abroad. But before mlddny the market had
developed fresh weakness nnd under heavy
selling for both accounts dropped rapidly
to the lowest level ot the morning, n net
decline of 810 points. Liverpool sold large
amounts of summer month s cotton here
and tho south sold the new crop positions.
Predictions that tomorrow's government
crop report and weather bureau's state
ment would be a decided argument helped
to weaken sentiment In bull quarters. The
short time policy of Fall River mills was
regarded ns but a temporary relief for the
congested cloth situation at home, while
southern mills reported a superabundance
of raw material and manufactured goods
with fow orders. During the early after
noon tho market was speculatively flat nnd
featureless. The late phases were not spe
cially Interesting and prices varied
scarcely four points. The close was steady
with prices 5&8 points net lower. Spot
closed (Hilot. 3-16.- decline: mlddllnir unlands.

CATTLE There was a liberal run of cat
tle today, a good proportion of the receipts,
however, were western grass cattle. The
mnrket on cornfed cattle opened rather
slow, as Interest seemed to center uround
the western cattle. Good cornfed stufT,
though, sold nt just about steady prices
with last week. The fact that thu west
erns are coming quite freely naturally has
a tendency to make buyers neglect the
commoner and half fat cattle, and prices
were, perhaps, a little off, some calling It a
dime lower In certain cases.
The cow market was well supplied, but
good stuff sold about the sftmc as at the
close of last week. Anything on tho com
mon order, however, was very dull und
weak. Canners are still In poor demand.
There was no particular change In bulls
and calves.
Tho stockcr and feeder trade took on
more life today than It has had In a long
time. The general rains over tho state
have given a more favorable outlook for
corn, and It is thought the demand from
the country will now revive. Feeder buyers
took hold to some extent of the half-fat
stuff, which has not been the case for some
tlmo pnst, and helped out the same on
that class of stock. The general market
for feeders could safely be quoted 10c
higher, with some sales better than that, as
compared with last week.
Packers bought the bulk of the western
cattle today. A string of 4-year-old steers
brought $4.60, but they were in good llsh
and much better than the cattle that
brought $4.10 a week ago. Another string
of steers sold for the same prlco they
brought last week. Some of the cows
brought about the same as they did a
week ago, while others sold lower. So few
western cattle have been on the murkct
that It fsj difficult to make comparisons.

FULL CORN CROP IS ASSURED
Snnday's Rains Mitko a Bumper Harvest of
Nebraska's Staplo Certain.
PASTURAGE IS GREATLY BENEFITED
Reports Received nt Itnllrond llenil

Wns Most .VeedpU.
The somber-hued atmosphere which
prevaded the general headquarters of Omnhn
railroads nil Inst week gave wny yester
day to rosento-tlntcd visions. Instead of
barren cornfields and attenuated freight
traffic, officials conjured up the Inspiring
picture of waving fields of growing corn and
subsequent demand for all available rolling
stock to furnish transportation facilities
for tho enormous crop. Sunday's splendid
rain wns the happy medium which dispelled
the gloom and Insured Nebraska's full corn
crop.
"The rain wns of inestimable value," said
Freight TrnfJIc Manager Munroe of the Union
Pacific. "It was certainly most timely, for
the corn crop was badly in need of It.
Nothing can now Intervene to prevent
great crop lu this state this year. The rain
extended over tho entire Union Paclflo
system In Nebraska. The greatest precipita
tion wns along the eastern boundary of the
state near the river, although there was a
heavy fall clear through the central and
western portions. Growing earn was not
alone benefited; tho pasturage In the west
ern part of the state where the cattle In
dustry Is carried on extensively wns wonder
fully helped. Thore Is no doubt now that
tho ranges wilt be In excellent condition
this fall."
Similar reports wero made at the head
quarters of tho Uurllngtou and the Elkuorn.
The rnln extended over both systems and
officials were correspondingly elated.
Hut llttlo damago was suffered by any of
tho rallronds In the way of washouts and
nearly nil trains wore ablo to run on
schedule time yesterday. Sunday night
somo delays were experienced owing to soft
tracks nnd minor washouts, but tho
difficulties wero In all cases easily remedied.
The main trouble was encountered In west
ern Iown and trnlnB from Chicago duo to
arrive In Omaha Sunday night wero nearly
all delayed from two to four hours.
MBASS MILLIONS TO FARMERS.
Sunday's Rnlns Do Untold Good In
Iown nnd Nrlirnskn.
"I am In receipt of reports from all over
the state," said Joseph A. Connor, the grain
mnn, yesterday, "nnd tbo rain was general
all over Nebraska and Iowa, It ran from ono
and a half to three lnchce in volume, anj
will mnke this state $10,000,000 richer. It
affected tho markets in Chicago so that
corn dropped 3 ccr.ts and wheat 1 cent be
cause of the breaking of the drouth. Al
though tho rainfall wns heavy, no damage
Is reported to small grain. I predict that
corn will go through all right without rain
unless we havo Intensely hot winds be
tween July 25 and Auguett 5. I think we
havo molsturo enough now In the ground
to mako an average crop In Nebraska, If no
more rains conio."
"This rain means not simply hundreds of
thousands to Nebraska," said Harry C.
Miller, "but millions, In saving the crops;
for If we had hnd dry weather for a day or
two longer It Is Impossible to conjecture
bow serious tho result might havo been.
If you divide tho state by a line drawn
north and south through Hastings you will
find thnt all east of It will have, It no fur
ther unfavorable conditions are encoun
tered,, one of the largest crops ever har
vested, while In the section west ot that
lino, the best that this copious rnln can do
will bo to make halt a crop."
"This rain has proven the salvation ot
our sugar beet crop," said John E. Utt ot the
Douglas County Reel Growers' association.
"It puts our fields In flno condition and I
begin to feel that In spite of adverwe cir
cumstances we will come out somewhat
ahead on our experimental venture."

W. S. Hayes, a merchant ot Kencsaw,
Nob., 1b In the city looking for his truant
wifet Sadie, who, ho says, deserted her homo
last week and camo to Omaha with Charles
Hayes, his cousin. Hayes' reason tor think
ing that the couple aro in Omaha Is based
on the fact that their baggage was checked
to this point.
An officer was detailed lo assist Hayes in
his research. Together they went to the
union depot In hopo ot finding tho express
man who had delivered the trunks, but
found Instead that the Saratoga had not
been called for since Its arrival. It was still
In tho storage room. Granted permission
to see It, Hayes was much surprised to find
an old battered chest which had been used
by hla wlfo ns a receptoclo for cast-otf cloth
ing and not the one she would naturally
take with her on n railroad trip. Ho be
lieves now that tho checking of this pleco
of baggnge to Omaha is but a blind to
throw him off the scent nnd that his wlfo
and her companion hnve driven to another
town in tho vicinity of Kencsaw and
bought tickets to somo distant point.
Tho woman Is described as 21 years old,
