In speaking of this matter yesterday after
noon an experienced fire tighter said; "A
first-class chemical eDglna. equipped with
side ladders, a light team ot fast horses and
two experienced men will do more work In
a city ot this kind than a steamer or n boss
company. By locating the chemical on
Twenty-fourth street and having It answer
all alnrms Its value will soon bo seen. In
many Instances a tiro breaks out some dis
tance from a fire plug and the first bosn
company on the ground has to wait for tho
arrival of the second before enough 'hose la
provided to lay a Hue. In some cases when
a long line Is laid the pressure Is light and
effective work cannot be done. "With a
chemical engine the apparatus can be driven
right up to the property and set to work
without delay. Last year 104 Bro alarms
were answered by the department and a
majority were fires caused by gasollno
stoves, etc. All these cbuld have been ex
tinguished with very little loss if a chemical
engine had been at hand."
It is understood that a chemical englno
can be bought for from 11,200 to J1.S0O and
the cost of maintenance Is slight as com
pared with a steamer. With a fire engine a
supply wagon has to follow with coal, which
necessitates the employment of a man and
a horse. A chemical carries 600 gallons ot
fluid and can bo recharged with tho loss of
but very little time and at a small cost.
Two men can operate a chemical, while It
takes three to man a steamer.
Councilman Tralnor wants to buy thlj
Chicago engine and locate It on Indian Hill.
He says it can be stored there until the city
is financially able to provide men and
horses to place It In service. ThlB plan 1
not favored to any extent by the majority
ot the council. With the present condition
of the funds It Is hardly probable that any
action will be taken until after the 1900
levy Is available.

D. R. Scott, one of tho oldest employes of
the Union Stock Yards company, died at
the South Omaha hospital Wednesday morn
ing from Injuries received by a fall the
evening before. Tuesday evening Mr,. Scott
was ascending the iron s, airway wmca
leads up to the Stock Yards National bank
when he was overcome by the heat and fell
to the landing below. Besides a compound
fracture of the left leg Mr. Scott suffered
severe bruises about the bead and chest.
As quickly as possible the injured man was
taken to the hospital, where fhytlclans did

1SSS, when ho was succeeded by Charhi
Carson. For the past ten or twelve years
Scott was virtually a pensioner. He worked
when he felt able and If he did not It was
all right. Every man in any way connected
with the live stock Industry at thl pplnt
was acquainted with Scott and thought well
of him. Little le known of his tamlly his
tory, but those who know him Bay tbt he
was about 70 years ot age.
Funeral services will be held at Brower's
undertaking rooms at 3 o'clock this after
noon, Rev. Dr. Wheeler officiating. Inter
ment will be at Laurel Hill cemetery.
Chief Smith Strpa Ou Tnemlny.
Next Tuesday morning L. F. Ettcr will
assume charge of the South Omaha fire
department and Tred M. Smith, whe hs
grown old in the ervlce. will retire. Chief
Smith assisted in organizing the first vol
unteer Are department here fourteen years
ago and has been connected with the depart
ment ever since. For the last ten years
ho has been chief. Many of Chlet Smith's
friends regret to see him leave tho depart
ment ot this tme, but Mayor Kelly has
deemed it advisable to moke a change.
Chief Smith U probably one of the bfBt
known men in the city and he la respected
and esteemed by all. He has a reputation
as a fire fighter and 1b personally ncquatntej
with a large number of the famous flro
chiefs ot the country.
The new chief is a young man of great
ability and some experience in the fire
fighting line. He Is a son of Postmaster
Etter and Is a prominent young repub
lican. His frlende predict that bo will make
a first-class bead for the fire department.
Quiet liny lu Sooth Omaha.
Up to 6 o'clock last evening not t single
arrest bad been made by the police and not
an accident had been reported. In every
way It was a remarkable holiday for South
Omaha. The stores closed early and nearly
everyone wbo could get away visited the
country or some of the parks. Hundreds
went to Rlvervlew park, while some went
to Waterloo and other points. The streets
were nearly deserted during the afternoon
and early evening. Chief Mitchell remained
on' duty at police headquarters ill day, ex
pecting that something might turn up to de
mand his attention, but the day force was
dismissed with nothing to report.
No fires occurred and there was leas than
the usual amount ot shooting of cracker,
pistols and bombs.
